BBT you were parotting some concerns about female football participation in W.A.

well can you explain this 2017 Participation Figures - Sports Industry AU

which shows female football participation (2017 but i don't think that matters much) as:

Total 463,364
W.A. 92,761
S.A. 102,518
Qld 100,841
Victoria 108,021

So IMO on these figures, Queensland is doing extremely well, W.A. and S.A. as expected and Victoria well below expectations on a population basis.
NSW, by a process of eleimination was doing O.K.
Be wary of figures quoting participation. Very rubbery.

As I say quite often - it is not the absolute value of the quantity but the relative values.
In this particular case I cannot see any valid reasons to criticize W.A.

1. More reports that the AFL will almost certainly receive a large, imminent increase for its 2025 onwards Rights' $- which will enable it to significantly advance GR AF etc. in NSW & ACT (mainly significant progress in Auskick, club & school comp. nos.).

Channelnews specialises in analysis of business activities/profitability etc. of the MSM, & consumer trends in media penetration etc.
It stated in June 2022 there will be fierce competition for the AFL 2025 Rights, not just from Ch. 7 & & Foxtel but, this time, also from NINE & Paramount/10.

D. Richards, 12.7.22, said

"With the AFL set to announce who has the TV and streaming rights from 2025 shortly, the increased cost to networks is going to look cheap when compared to sporting rights in the USA where soccer is not even a mainstream sport, yet it’s attracting big dollars...

The A$3-billion-dollar fee (new 6 year- A$500m pa- deal for UEFA?) if they get it will be more than double what UEFA gets every year under current agreements, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
If this formula applies to AFL, networks could be paying a lot more than the $670M (US$= A$946, over 2years. My emphases, & words in brackets) that the last lot of rights generated for the AFL".

"With the AFL set to announce who has the TV and streaming rights from 2025 shortly, the increased cost to networks is going to look cheap when compared to sporting rights in the USA where soccer is not even a mainstream sport"

Content Is King; & live sports' content is increasingly being highly sought after- & attracts increasing Rights' $.

2. SMH M. Conn 23.6

Conn said

"As a budding rugby league fullback Isaac Heeney loved watching Anthony Minichiello so he defied the family tradition of barracking for the Newcastle Knights to become a rusted-on Roosters fan.
Fast-forward and Heeney, 26, is the Swans’ poster boy, the Hunter Valley kid from NRL heartland who is a high-flying star of the AFL".

Isaac Heeney said

"Since the age of 12 I was in the Swans Academy and I think that was a massive driver as to why I stayed with AFL instead of NRL and pursued it. There was a nice little pathway”.

Conn "League remained his favourite sport until his mid-teens. He still watches more NRL than AFL.

When Heeney joined the Swans’ academy he couldn’t name most of the AFL clubs, let alone any of their star players...Heeney was the only kid in his primary school who played Aussie Rules and was one of only two at high school, proving how pivotal club academies are in the non-AFL states for attracting and retaining talent".

Heeney “The old man played rugby league and union growing up and mum was a swimmer and into athletics. AFL was foreign to the whole family,” Heeney said. (All my emphases).

Junior AF comps. in NSW have strong Swans & GWS club branding etc., & reasonably regular player visits. This enhances the "tribalism" aspect, mixing with AFL players (if only briefly, & occasionally)/"live" role models, & identification with the Swans & GWS.

In the proximate period to 2012, there had been only "AFL"-branded Academies throughout NSW & ACT- but, re increasing NSW/ACT Draft nos., that period had very little success. They were, basically, failures- which reinforce the many benefits of having 2 "active" Clubs & their Academies from 2012.
IIRC, drafted player nos. had dropped considerably from the Riverina, for c. 15 years prior to GWS start in 2012; & Canberra Pear recently stated that, from 2005-2015, there were nil drafted players from ACT!

Very few people barrack for the AFL, they barrack for "our Club".

Since 2012, drafted nos. have noticeably increased.

3.
You do know there is a dedicated section on media rights
And you know that one issue or development can be relevant to multiple Threads.

Why are you actively trying to sabotage W.A. football ?
Bizarre.

I can't remember my exact words, but I think this may have been misinterpreted (or I misspoke).

The ACT had three recruits in that time. Josh Bruce, Jason Tutt and Phil Davis (though Davis technically came through the SANFL).

But the academy has definitely had an effect, pretty much averaging at least one player per year coming through since 2015.

And you know that one issue or development can be relevant to multiple Threads.

Are you a child. Am I dealing with a child.
As the mods have told you, post the guts of post in the relevant thread and the implications, comments and a LINK in another.
In this case media rights definitely belongs in it's unique thread being media rights.
Now, the implications of possibly getting more revenue is possibly more expenditure.
I can see only the most basic of links from more money to more expenditure on northern grassroots football.
They simply may do what they've done before and give more to the players or more to AFLW.
How they might use added revenue - grassroots, infrastructure, exhibition games (say Newcastle) is relevant.
What if the total revenue goes down.
What if FTA exposure is reduced ?

Yes, it's bizarre that you attack the WWAFL in a NSW thread.
It's bizarre that you ask me for figures and when I give you figures (Wooki'es figures) you attack me.
Am I dealing with a child ?
Do you own up and say, on those figures, that women's football in W.A. looks to be doing O.K ?
I await with bated breath.

Not only that, but a boring troll.
I've lost count of the number of times he's posted the same thing... only to be shot down.....again.

He´s like a broken record.

-No one likes AFL outside of Australia.
-Where AFL began.
-Drugs in AFL
-Andrew Demitrio.
-GWS and tax payers money.

The poor little girl is so upset about AFL because it´s bigger than NRL in Australia.

It irritates him that much he spends his life trolling it on AFL forums.

Normal, mature, secure people don´t do that.

1. This is a list of players from the ACT, who were drafted from 1998 inc., & actually played in the AFL.

It shows there were only two between 1998-2011 (although P. Davis left when he was 14 y.o.-he was recruited from SANFL); & eight from 2012-2021 inc. There was a big decline prior to 2012, & reveals the benefits of GWS's efforts, & their ACT Academy.

For AFLW players from the ACT & Queanbeyan, from 2017-2022, there are 14 players.
(In ACT & Queanbeyan, GR AF club & school comp. player nos. have also boomed since 2012, now easily eclipsing GR contact RL club & school comp. nos. in ACT & Queanbeyan).

Yes, it's bizarre that you attack the WWAFL in a NSW thread.
I did not introduce the topic of female AF in WA, into this Thread.

Furthermore, my comment was "GR adult female club comp. player nos. in WA are very poor"- I said this twice, also to you; & also said I had no interest in the AFL's fluff "participant nos.", as these are very misleading & unreliable.
You only, however, produced "participant figures"- why not the above adult club nos,. for what I was discussing?

Surely you don't think that, in 2017, there were 92,761 GR adult female club comp. players in WA? What is your estimate for 2017, 2020, & 2022?

So a man born in Australia, that invents a new sport in Australia called Australian rules football, that isn't played anywhere else in the world, somehow that sport isn't considered 'Australian'? Yeah, good point you make there, that's hilarious 🤣.
Mate he went to Rugby School in England where he played Rugby and Cricket
Can't you see the connection?
You would have to be a total ninnyhammer to believe that all football codes don't have their origins in the British Isles

FFS. You ran with it.

my comment was "GR adult female club comp. player nos. in WA are very poor"

with no knowledge of the situation there.

As I have said many times before, I agree w.r.t. to absolute numbers but there tends to be truth in relative numbers.

Yes. It's seems like the logical thing to quote.

why not the above adult club nos,

WAWFL or WAFLW numbers ?

Surely you don't think that, in 2017, there were 92,761 GR adult female club comp. players in WA?

No more than I think there were about 100,000 in Victoria, Queensland and S.A.
What is your estimate for 2017, 2020, & 2022?

WTF do you care ? If you don't believe the AFL's figures WTF are you asking me ?
Wookie posted these figures and says they are from the AFL annual report I believe.
They show there is no problem with W.A. Don't you agree.
they don't exactly interpolate with participation figures but you'd have to be some kind of troll to suggest there is a problem in W.A.
Regardless WTF are you going on about it in this forum ?

No, you have it wrong. To note a contemporary source - Tom Wills' cousin and friend - and one of the pioneers of Australian Football, H.C.A. Harrison, in his autobiography, "The Story of an Athlete", recalled (chp 7) - "... when T.W.
Wills arrived back from England, fresh from Rugby School, full of enthusiam for all kinds of sport, he suggested that we should make a start with it. He very sensible advised us not to take up Rugby although that had been his own game because he considered it unsuitalbe for grown men ... but to work out a game of our own". -
(which is exactly what they did!)

Furthermore, Wills was only one of four who codified the first Australian Ffotball rules on 17 May 1859 (the other 3 being W.J. Hammersley, J.B. Thompson and Irishman Thomas Smith). Thompson, for one, fiercely opposed any rugby influence in the rules and clearly got his way..

So the game was unique and Australian, very different from any English code right from the very start. Even the conservative Anglophile (but excellent historian) Geoffrey Blainey, writes ("A Game of Our Own") -

"..."The game is essentially an Australian invention. It arose ... When the various kinds of English football were still in a state of flux. ... Almost at once it was a distinctive game. ... far removed from rugby and soccer. ..." (Preface)

"... Selected by footballers themselves ... the committee of rule makers met on Tuesday 17 May 1859 and discussed rules which for the most part had been found to work well the preceding season ..." (p 47)

"... In designing the rules for football ... they were not merely plucking rules from here and there and combining them, The games played the previous season on the capacious grounds of Melbournemust already have brought certain rules and styles of play into prominence ... the new committee had to confirm those rules which most footballers were likely to accept.... they were also devising new rules which might solve some of the recent disputes that had occurred during play. By the end of the meeting they had moved a long way from the more rugby-style rules ..." (p 48)

The fact that the game was uniquely Australian and unlike anything from England was well recognised at the time.
In fact, the initial 1859 rules was recognised as being distinctly different from any of then English codes only weeks
after they were introduced is shown by the words of James Thompson (one of the four at the meeting that devised
the first codified rules of Australia's own football code), who wrote shortly after the meeting (in The Victorian Cricketer’s Guide for 1859-60) -
“Football, as played in Victoria, is now fit to run alone. I have accordingly omitted [from this publication] the Rugby and Eton rules, because we have agreed to a code of our own…”

Surely you don't think that, in 2017, there were 92,761 GR adult female club comp. players in WA? What is your estimate for 2017, 2020, & 2022?

Josh Fahey was also recruited from Queanbeyan in 2021 (currently on the GWS injury list).

He's a good example of the AFL's increased Canberra presence paying off. He grew up in a union family, and played union and league growing up, but all his friends played Aussie Rules, so he gave it a go and excelled.

1. Henson Park, in Marrickville Inner WS, has a capacity of c.15k (big hill). Due to the lack of summer, suitable AF grounds in NS & ES (Swans' Zone) for an elite AFLW team, the Swans will play their AFLW games there. In winter, it already hosts GR AF games there.
On 28.6.22, more details were announced of the $10.5m major upgrade it will receive- create specific women's facilities, refurbished grandstand etc. The AFL is paying $2.5m.

Swans AFLW player S. Ford, referring to the major upgrade (she is an engineer working on it) said

"The growth in the women's game has been phenomenal...You turn up gameday, & the facilities aren't what a female expects them to be, so it's awesome to see people wanting to improve that, & it's only going to do great things for the game".

Female GR AF has been booming all over Sydney & NSW since 2017- when the vast majority of GR clubs are able to provide separate female changerooms, & toilets/showers etc., this growth will probably be further turbocharged.

2. The Swans' new AFLW team has obtained Volkswagen as their shorts' sponsor, until the end of 2024. Another prestigous sponsor, QBE, is also the AFLW Swans' jumper sponsor
Volkswagen has also sponsored the "Volkswagen Swans Fit Program", which has had "thousands of schoolchildren" in Sydney already participate in it; & has provided c. $100k funds for GR AF.

Due to Sydney's very strong corporate presence/many HQ's etc., the AFL has greatly benefited from relationships with very large, "generous", cos.

3.
my comment was "GR adult female club comp. player nos. in WA are very poor"
RedV3x replied "with no knowledge of the situation there".

Another incorrect statement from you.
Other BF posters have said GR female adult club nos. in Perth are poor, & I agree with them- as per my link below, with details of "GR female adult club comp. nos." in Perth.
I never queried, nor expressed disappointment, with GR junior female club comp. nos.

(See my post 17.7.22)

They show there is no problem with W.A. Don't you agree.
No, I don't agree- the Perth Football League (which only started in 2018, with only 16 teams- there was a very small women's League before then) in 2022 only has 66 women's teams. As Perth is an heartland city of c. 2.15m, this is , relatively, very poor for GR women's AF (even if the 2022 WAFLW teams were added).

Another BF poster said that c. 40 women's teams have been added, in the PFL, in last 2 years.

they don't exactly interpolate with participation figures but you'd have to be some kind of troll to suggest there is a problem in W.A.
The female "participation figures" you provided a link for (& you very rarely provide any links whatsoever) of 100K+ females in WA in 2017 are, obviously, VERY misleading. I only referred to "GR adult female club comp. nos." Club jnr female nos. are good in WA now.

The only person who is trolling is you.

I have shown you many times that there is no problem with female football in W.A. and it compares well with the rest of Australia.
If you want further discussion then you need to do the courtesy of posting your thoughts in the correct thread.
This troll of yours has no place in "A third team for Sydney".

1. Henson Park, in Marrickville Inner WS, has a capacity of c.15k

Strange to mention "capacity" when Henson Park is essentially a large open space.

Female GR AF has been booming all over Sydney & NSW since 2017-

"Booming" , great, can you give figures so we can have an accurate assessment for ourselves just how good things are.

The female "participation figures" of 100K+ females in WA in 2017 are, obviously, VERY misleading.

No, they are AFL figures according to Wookie and as relative measure they show W>a> female football in good stead.

I only referred to "GR adult female club comp. nos."

The proof is in the pudding so to speak and obviously female football in W.A. is doing well from a results p.o.v.
