Can anyone tell me why the academy’s only play 5 and NT play 3 and Tassie play the most with 11 Coates league games

Cost of travel and accommodation I assume.

None of the Vic teams travelled Inter-state for any games this year.

I think Read has potential to be a ruckman at some point.
His spatial awareness is good.
Pretty nice taps when he can get his hands to it.

Obviously just getting bodied out of the way at present, hopefully can put on 10+ kg over the next 2 years.

We could just play him as a third tall defender (with little spurts in the ruck if needed) for his first two seasons while he puts on muscle and then shift him into the ruck on a more full-time basis if his form and size warrant it?

I hadn’t even considered others at the club.
It could be nice timing with Witt’s retiring. Moyle to the 1’s, Read from defender (or wing) to ruck.

I guess the vision would be with Read and Moyle in the AFL team. So he’ll have to develop elsewhere.

Could work out perfectly. Witts is turning 31 in a few months so if we're to assume Read will take two seasons to develop his body then Witta will be 33 turning 34 by the time that season rolls around and I'd imagine he'd be winding down by then. Moyle will be 24 by that stage so it could be a nice little ruck battle between him and Read for the top ruck spot in 2025/26. Obviously we still retain the option to play Read elsewhere should we want to play both. I think we'll just want to get games into Read because he seems the type to adjust to a higher standard of footy pretty quickly.

I had heard all the talk but hadn't really seen more than a half or two of Read playing until recently.
Got to say, he's really impressed me.
The skill, spatial awareness, touch and vision combined with his athletic abilities are super promising.

Also so glad we've got another parent / relative on the board again.

Highly rated bottom ager Leonardo Lombard rejoined the Broadbeach seniors QAFL team over the last fortnight after finishing up his Allies commitments and has reportedly been outstanding in their two most recent wins. It would appear that Lombard is around the 180cm mark now so any previous concerns about his height (his famous father was only 175cm) don't seem to be an issue anymore. Don't think we'll see Leo lining up for our VFL team this year (is he even allowed?) but I suspect he will be chosen to represent the U17 QLD state team later this year. Other than that he should continue playing with the Broady seniors and may even get to play in a QAFL premiership if they keep up their winning ways. A few familiar names have been playing alongside Lombard in the Broadbeach seniors this year like Jacob Townsend, Jye Lockett and fellow U18 academy member Josh Zanker-Close.

Great stuff. Who do you rate higher out of Lombard and Rogers? Personally I really rate Lombard and his power, but was pleasantly surprised how great Rogers looked this year. They are pretty similar players actually, but Lombard has the strength and size advantage. Both quick, fast hands and good kicks.

Hard to say. Both seem to be potential top 10 picks that are lightning quick and have good hand/foot skills. Funnily enough, both go to the same school so they really are similar in a lot of ways. Lombard is certainly the more athletic of the two (thanks Hector) and perhaps that will translate better at the AFL level? Lombard is also taller. Other than that I can't really split them but I think both will be stars for us so we're absolutely spoilt to have access to both!

The U15 Queensland state team got announced for the National Championships starting later this week and nine Gold Coasters were named in the QLD team. Let's see if we can continue our good run and have a few more All Australians named at the U15 level this year.
  • Jake Callinan (Surfers Paradise)
  • Archie Hill (Broadbeach)
  • Jackson Jarvis (Palm Beach Currumbin)
  • Clash Kevern (Palm Beach Currumbin)
  • Ned Lawton (Palm Beach Currumbin)
  • Isaac Mayne (Ormeau)
  • Taj Murray (Burleigh)
  • Sam Murray (Ormeau)
  • Jesse Wenzel (Broadbeach)
Not a good first game.

So we put… 100k into developing him in our academy for the next handful of years only for him to choose the Demons…

Whilst another poor GC kid doesn’t get the opportunity to be a part of our academy due to White holding that position.

Doesn’t seem fair to me
I feel your pain bro but we had the same thing with Mac Andrew who should've been ours but went to you guys.

What does Melbournes NGA set up involve?
Who are the coaches and how many times a week do they have nga raining sessions? Who are the current list of NGA candidates? When do they play games as an nga group?

I think there should be some level of access to clubs who have legitimately developed juniors from vulnerable cohorts. Ie. non traditional AFL state or migrant population.

It seems as though Melbourne did have a level of input for Mac but north trying to claim sanders sounds completely bullshit to me.

But they shouldn’t just have access as someone is in their zone and their name went on a list at some point a few years ago.

Dees call for NGA rule tweak as top-10 prospect slips out of reach - Dees call for NGA rule tweak as top-10 prospect slips out of reach

I think when I read between the lines, Mac Andrew probably should be a demon so I think its only fair that Kalani White becomes a dee. I just wanted to point out that when you guys feel like it's unfair if/when Kalani becomes a dee then it should be balanced out with the fact that we got shafted with Mac Andrew.

Am I reading that article correct he only joined the demons NGA that year? And the article was written in august 2021 so 8 months?

dees were involved with Mac Andrew from 2018. he should've been a dee but the afl changed the rules that season due to the unfair advantage that Ugle-hagan gave the Bulldogs.

Looks like the Queensland U15 state team was more competitive in their clash against Vic White (Country?) yesterday in a 9.11 (65) - 4.1 (25) loss. From our perspective, Broadbeach's Archie Hill & PBC's Jackson Jarvis were both named in the bests for the two games played so far so perhaps they are the Queensland standouts in that age group. Also worth mentioning that Burleigh's Taj Murray was named in the bests in the Vic White game and Ormeau's Sam Murray + Surfers Paradise's Jake Callinan were named in the bests for the Western Australia game. They will play the U15 ACT team tomorrow afternoon in what will likely be QLD's only win for the carnival.

Not sure if any Queenslanders will be named in the U15 AA team this year but the ones that appear to have a chance are Archie Hill (Broadbeach), Jackson Jarvis (PBC) and Hodgey's son Cooper Hodge (Morningside) who have all been named in the bests for every match so far. From what I can tell, Archie Hill appears to be the best performer of all the Queenslanders so far. Hopefully they can get a W tomorrow against the ACT.

Oh yes I get what your saying.

I’m just hypothesising that the gc academy has far more involvement and responsibility for developing players up here. Because there isn’t that level of expertise otherwise at junior level. The suns academy guys have dedicated coaches, regular training, compete as a team and receive game day coaching all from academy staff, access to suns facilities etc.. they would literally have 1000’s of contact hours from age 12-18. without it, you’re not going to see multiple first round talents from our zones over past 5-6 years.

I know Melbourne was ‘involved’ in mac Andrew from 2018 but what does that mean exactly?
Does it mean he went to 3 Melbourne training sessions a year and got a couple of video sessions with demons academy staff but otherwise left things to the Dandenong coaches? Or was there a greater contribution from Melbourne coaches over those 3 years? What exactly is the NGA program for the demons? There is obviously no game day component which is a big part of player development.

I don’t think you can be to aggrieved because a guy got drafted elsewhere IF you really had minimal input to his development.

So whilst you can compare they aren’t really alike for a variety of reasons.

Suns just have to continue to develop across the board and kids like Bailey Scott, white and even Ashcroft (developed by our academy for 4 years before leaving as a star) will choose the suns over other more established AFL teams / regions they have links to.

The U15 Queensland team bounced back with a commanding 111-point victory over the ACT today! PBC's Jackson Jarvis was once again named in the bests and he, along with Cooper Hodge, look like they are seriously in line for AA selection after being named in the bests for all three national championship games to date. Queensland will face Tasmania in a 3rd place playoff tomorrow and I believe this will be their last game of the carnival so obviously it's their last chance to impress on the national stage. Hoping the boys in maroon can win and walk away with an even 2 win - 2 loss record for the championships.

Exciting stuff and some very famous names there! Boston Everitt (Spida's son), Joe Kennedy (Maxy's son) and Zai Millane (Darren's nephew) are all known footy bloodlines and Leo Lombard's father is a famous Cuban UFC fighter named Hector. Seems like this is going to keep happening each year with our academy so we just have to get used to the idea that we may lose some of our academy kids to other club's F/S access. Would be nice if we could keep a few though! Not sure if the U17 Queensland team is good enough to take down Vic Country but Lombard and Nancarrow are definitely the ones to keep an eye on and are both potential first round picks next year. Hopefully the Queensland U17s will be more competitive this year when compared to the belting they received from Vic Metro last year.

Just on that, the list confirms that Boston Everitt is playing club footy for Oakleigh these days and attends Carey Grammar so he must have made the move down south at some point this year. It would appear the whole Everitt family moved to Melbourne but Spida still flies up regularly for events on the GC. I assume Boston has fulfilled the residence criteria to remain in our academy program and will continue to play for us next year just like Nancarrow. I'd expect Boston to play for our U18 academy, the Allies (if good enough), Carey and Oakleigh next year so he'll have plenty of opportunity to showcase his skills in front of AFL recruiters. Assuming he's good enough, I'm still holding out hope that he'll do a Will Ashcroft and select us over the Saints! If I had the choice of being coached by Damien Hardwick or Ross Lyon then I'd definitely be heading home to the Gold Coast.
