My favourite Read game so far. It felt like he was everywhere in the fourth quarter when the game was there to be won.

I've mentioned that I'm unsure about whether he'll be a ruck at AFL level. I still struggle to find any instances where he gets a clear hit out to advantage. But he's got a strong case of the Blicavses, as all his ruck highlights come from the work he does after the tap. In this game he played a decent amount of CHF and would become an extra midfielder around the ball after the center bounce, something that he's quite effective at.

In america they would call him a unicorn.

I like the Blicaves comparison as tall guy who can potentially play all over the ground but probably not best suited to being a starting ruck.

Blicavs with a higher baseline junior footy IQ is such an apt comparison.

13 hit outs as starting Ruck Vs Vic Country. Can’t see him being a AFL level ruckman at this stage.

Watched a bit of him this year and seems to rely on scooping up the lose ball after the the bounce, rather than clear taps to advantage. Struggles holding his ground at ball-ins due to his current weight.

See him at CHB for sure, with his unbelievable tank and solid disposal by foot. Not many 200cm + blokes have the touch Read possess.

A massive congrats to the following boys who were selected in the U16 Boys All-Australian Team:
⭐
Kalani White - Gold Coast SUNS Academy/Broadbeach
⭐
Harrison Bridge - Brisbane Lions Academy/Sherwood
⭐
Zeke Uwland - Gold Coast SUNS Academy/Burleigh
⭐
Dylan Patterson - Gold Coast SUNS Academy/Palm Beach Currumbin
⭐
Jai Murray - Gold Coast SUNS Academy/Broadbeach
⭐
Beau Addinsall - Gold Coast SUNS Academy/Broadbeach
⭐
Daniel Annable - Brisbane Lions Academy/Victoria Point

Rogers was his usual industrious self in this game, but his radar was a little off resulting in a greater than usual number of turnovers. Played more game time as a high half forward and got a lot of the ball in dangerous positions as shown by his 8 inside 50s.

How exciting! Five U16 All-Australians from our academy is equal most with Vic Metro and really says a lot about how far our academy has come in the last few years. Here's a breakdown of our U16 AA players from AFL.com.au:
Centre Half Back: Kalani White
(Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Broadbeach)
Date of Birth: 05/05/07; Height 197cm
Tall defender who showed he can also go forward in the Championships and really excite with his
athleticism and outstanding overhead marking. Has a supernatural leap and the size to win the
contest or bring the ball to ground to the benefit of his team. Rarely beaten one-on-one, averaging 7.3
disposals and 2.3 marks playing predominately in deep defence. Son of former No.1 draft pick Jeff
White who played with Fremantle and Melbourne.
Wing: Zeke Uwland
(Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Burleigh)
Date of Birth: 24/04/07; Height: 176cm
Skilful wingman who read the play superbly, using his left foot to great effect including hitting the
scoreboard. Also showed the ability to find space and provide the connection from defence to attack,
averaging 9.7 marks and 25 disposals (17 uncontested) to be a real asset to his team. Produced a
best on ground performance against the Sydney Swans Academy.
Wing: Dylan Patterson
(Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Palm Beach Currumbin)
Date of Birth: 01/09/07; Height: 183cm
Super quick wingman/half forward who excited with his energy and zest in creating opportunities for
his team. Gathered on average 13 disposals (six contested) and four tackles to provide a real spark
for the Suns
Half Forward Flank: Jai Murray
(Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Broadbeach)
Date of Birth: 09/03/07; Height: 184cm
Medium midfielder/forward who wins the ball one-on-one and is a fierce competitor. Tidy ball user and
decision maker, he averaged 22 disposals (nine contested) and a Championships-high eight tackles
to be ranked number one in that category across both divisions.
Half Forward Flank: Beau Addinsall
(Queensland/Gold Coast Suns Academy/Broadbeach)
Date of Birth: 09/03/07; Height: 179cm
Uncanny midfielder/forward with prolific ball-winning ability and innate goal sense. Was outstanding
across the Championships, averaging 28 disposals (13 contested) and 7.7 tackles. Also kicked five
goals against Tasmania and was rewarded for his three impressive performances, not only winning
the Suns’ MVP but the Alan McLean Medal as the best and fairest player in Pool B.

I reckon where he plays footy next year will be a telling sign of his intentions. If he's deadset on going to the Dees as a father-son selection then you'd think the APS schools down there would be lining up to gift him a scholarship after just being named in the U16 All-Australian team. If he stays on the Gold Coast next year then that most likely suggests he turned down scholarship opportunities and you never know what that might mean...

sWalter, Read, Rogers, Lombard, Nancarrow and Addinsall. Some absolute superstars coming through your academy among that group plus a few others who look promising. Great to see the GC academy thriving and producing quality QLD talent, so good for the game!
Importantly, all but Nancarrow are Gold Coast juniors and that shows the game is growing rapidly at the grassroots level here. Had the Ashcrofts stayed on the Gold Coast, it would have been even more obvious that we're currently experiencing a gigantic explosion of first round draft talent from the GC.

2022 - Will Ashcroft (#2)
2023 - Jed Walter (#2), Ethan Read (#5), Jake Rogers (#10)
2024 - Levi Ashcroft (#5), Leo Lombard (#8)
2025 - Beau Addinsall (First round)

That's an unbelievable amount of talent to come from the one regional city over a 4-5 year period. Also, keep an eye on Jai Murray for the 2025 draft class as well. Both he and Addinsall have been named U15 & U16 AAs in back-to-back years.

2018 QLD AFL U14 Boys carnival team - Gold Coast South

Funnily enough, pretty sure that 2018 GC South U14 team went winless through that carnival.

Just goes to show how long these guys have been been playing and training together in Rep and Academy teams.

Also good to see others from this team filtering through the QAFL and VFL. Both Harrington and Dawson have played VFL for the Suns this season and ran out for Broadbeach seniors on Saturday. Skalij is a regular in the Palmy seniors, and a number of others on this list are working their way through colts and ressies at their respective clubs.

Great signs for Queensland footy.

The U15 Queensland state team got announced for the National Championships starting later this week and nine Gold Coasters were named in the QLD team. Let's see if we can continue our good run and have a few more All Australians named at the U15 level this year.
  • Jake Callinan (Surfers Paradise)
  • Archie Hill (Broadbeach)
  • Jackson Jarvis (Palm Beach Currumbin)
  • Clash Kevern (Palm Beach Currumbin)
  • Ned Lawton (Palm Beach Currumbin)
  • Isaac Mayne (Ormeau)
  • Taj Murray (Burleigh)
  • Sam Murray (Ormeau)
  • Jesse Wenzel (Broadbeach)
