Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

Oh well, a superb career has finally come to an end, thought he was full of it when he said he had no intentions to retire anytime in the next 12 months, was getting too old, should have retired from ODIs atleast a year ago to prolong his test career

He said earlier last year that was a possibility at the end of this year.

Hey, just imagine if he did retire at the start of last year from ODIs. We wouldn't of gotten his 149. ;)

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

Interesting to note that those who criticise Gilly for averaging *only* 30 in recent times probably don't know that Ian Healy average 27.40 for his whole test career, Rod Marsh only 26.

I suppose when you do things better than anyone else before, you're therefore held to a higher standard...

That was a completly different era of the game though

Gilchrist shows his class yet again, always putting the team before himself.

Champion on the field, bigger champion off the field.

The reason we are in a new era is because Gilly redefined the keeping role from keeping and being handy with that bat, to keeping and being another top line batsman

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

And Gilchrist was the one who changed the game. Look at the Poms' desperate attempts to match him the last few years picking sub-par keepers who can bat a bit.
Yes unfortunatly in a good and bad way. Batting has improved but specialist keepers are a dying breed which I for one think is a shame even if no one else agrees

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

It says alot about Gilchrist's character that he's just so amazingly unselfish enough to step aside before the One Day series, giving a 'youngster' like Haddin the chance to step up and have his turn now in the International arena.

Just an amazing cricketer and an even better person.

So he isn't playing in the ODI series ?

Well done Adam.

Gilchrist is a huge reason of the constant success that has followed this team throughout his career. A top batsman and a good keeper who dominated his realm of the game.

The signs may have been appearing with the gloves, he has not been at his best behind the stumps this summer, but he leaves the game a true champion and someone who demonstrated true sportsmanship.

Will always remember this man as one of the greats.

Spot on - he's obviously one of the best Cricketers in history; but he also just comes across as an absolutely awesome, decent bloke.

I remember when him and Alfie saved that Test against the Pakis, I had a free at school in year 12 and was in the Library doing an assignment which required the use of a TV (videos), I flicked over to check the Cricket score at one stage, ended up watching the rest of the game and missing a couple of classes.

Mate, stop overacting.
If anything you should be happy, you will be in time trust me.
Gilly got to go out on his own terms, he wasn't forced be glad. I'm sure Gilly will be glad.

Yup. Time to celebrate a great test career, where he holds the Test dismissal record currently. Bet of luck to him. :thumbsu:

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

I loved watching him as a batsman. He was a freak with the bat and was amazing when he came on the field. We will miss him. He's the biggest hitter I've ever seen.

He raised the bar so far, that when he performed like past greats (Healy/Marsh) he was considered not good enough anymore!
