Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

He raised the bar so far, that when he performed like past greats (Healy/Marsh) he was considered not good enough anymore!

Look, to be fair it wasnt his batting which really got heat on Gilly, it was the number of catches he dropped this summer.

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

Maybe so, but the point i was making is still true :p

Yeah, i agree that he set the standard so high early in his career.

Gilchrist though was a player that had to be brilliant with the bat, to make up for any short comings he had as a keeper. Whilst hes the world record holding keeper, i dont think anyone really thinks Gilchrist is the best gloveman of all time. He was capable of some amazing catches at times, alot of which was due to his great reflexes, but also, and especially in recent times, could grass some dollies. In terms of pure wicketkeeping, give me Healy any day. Not to take anything away from Gilchrists great career and everything hes meant to Australian cricket though, hes a legend of the game.

Sad to see him go, but great to see him go on (pretty much) on his own terms.

My favourite cricketer ever.

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

Hmm, thought he could of played longer, but then again so could of Warne.

The media has gotten to him in some respects i think, i'm pretty sure a goal of his was to get to 100 tests, still he has made his decision and the best of luck to him.

Superstar.

Great retirement. Going out on his terms. While acceptable, his batting and glove work has been on the way down and at 36 he has three young kids and a wife to worry about. Fantastic career and intelligent retirement. Freakish talent.

Wow what a champion play Gilly was. This is the end of an era with all the ultra exciting players now out of the test team. You couldnt look away when Warne, McGrath or Gilly were doing their stuff.

Geez I am happy I bought that 5-0 dvd set, time to watch some Gilly magic at the WACA!

"And Gilchrist was the one who changed the game. Look at the Poms' desperate attempts to match him the last few years picking sub-par keepers who can bat a bit."

Aint that the truth. Poor old Chris Read.

Anyway, congratulations on a great career Gilly. You've produced some amazing cricket over the past decade or so. The ton in Perth and last years WC final are just two innings that stick in my mind. To use a Richie/Nicholas phrase "one of the great players".

Now go and hit the 224no to get the average back above 50.

shattered to see him go, he is my favorite sportsperson. However the timing is right. One of the things I admire so much is how unselfish he has been. He never put himself ahead of the team, not once batted for the red ink. Once again he is showing how unselfish he is. He will have realised his keeping is slipping and even though he would have love to go to england he puts the team first. One of the greatest IMO- right up there with our other modern day greats in warne, mcgrath and ponting. The great ones change the way the game is played and I cant remember anyone change a cricketers role like gilly changed keeping.

Well done Gilly!!!

I have the strong feeling he's been pushed, given what he said before the fourth test match.

I was just watching highlights of Gilly's second fastest ever test match hundred and his 149 in the World Cup final the other day on youtube. He could hit them as hard as anyone in the storied history of cricket.

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from Test Cricket

At least Gilly has 2 new records for when he retires. The most consecutive test matches by a cricket (recently surpassing Dravid in the 2nd or 3rd test) and the most catches.

This needs to be qualified - it's of players still currently playing. Gilchrist (and Dravid) are nowhere near the all-time record, which is held by AR Border with 153 consecutive tests between 10 March 1979 and 25 March 1994. ME Waugh played 107 consecutive tests between 3 July 1993 and 19 October 2002. SM Gavaskar played 106 consecutive tests between 23 January 1975 and 3 February 1987.

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from Test Cricket

Agree with Dixie, I get that feeling he's being pushed too, which is a pity if true. Been a pleasure watching Gilly, he's really revolutionised the role of the keeper-batsman and probably set the bar too high for most. Was my favourite player (I used to hangout to watch him bat), so it's very sad to see him go.

What a magnificent career Gilly has had in the Baggy Green.
He was a once in 50 year type player who won so many games for Australia.:thumbsu:
He will be sadly missed although all good things come to an end:(

Changed the game, made it so a keeper had to be able to bat.

Congratulations on a magnificent career.

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

When on song he was one of the most exciting and dominant batsmen to play in either form of the game. His form had slipped in recent years but the guy is a champion cricketer who was a key component to our to our couple of record streaks. Will definately miss him.

What a great career Gilly has had, rescued Australia many times and has forever changed the way in which we look at wicket keepers.

Something about the decision doesn't seem right though, my gut feeling is there is more to it. He has either been pushed or there is a personal reason. Especially with it happening so sudden and not taking part in the one dayers :(

It's been a pleasure to watch you Gilly :thumbsu:

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

Channel 9 to run a Gilchrist retirement special collectors edition tomorrow for the low low price of 5 payments of $99.95.
You weren't far off the mark Tapee, Gilchrist memorabilia being advertized already.

Re: Adam Gilchrist announces his retirement from all forms of Cricket *TBC*

Yeah it will be ridiculous if they give the next best keeper-batsman in the country a shot.

He'd probably be one of the ones pushing for Crossthwaite to get the job :D

I think all the criticism from the journos hastened his decision.

Tributes below from Pollock and Collingwood.

Polly: Gilchrist was fantastic player
January 26 2008 at 06:06PM
By Telford Vice

South Africa's Shaun Pollock called Adam Gilchrist a fantastic player after the Australian said on Saturday that he was retiring.

"He was a fantastic player and a great opponent," fellow all-rounder Pollock said after Gilchrist stunned the cricketing world by quitting all forms of the game.

"People used to say Australia didn't have enough all-rounders, but he kept wicket fantastically well and he averaged 50 batting at number seven.

"You couldn't ask for a better all-rounder than that.

"You didn't feel comfortable until you got him out."

Gilchrist said he was quitting Test cricket after the current match against India ends at Adelaide Oval on Monday and then one-day internationals at the end of the forthcoming triangular series against India and Sri Lanka. Gilchrist's retirement follows Pollock's decision earlier this month to quit the game following the current home one-day series against West Indies.

"It's been really good to be able to say goodbye to people, and I'm sure Adam will appreciate the chance to do that," Pollock said.

"I'm sure he will have thought this through carefully. It's not a decision you take lightly.

"He called me after I announced my retirement, and perhaps it all makes sense now. He offered me his congratulations on my career and I'd like to do the same for him." Collingwood relieved to see back of Gilchrist
January 26 2008 at 07:18PM London - Paul Collingwood believes Australia will find it hard to replace the "amazing" Adam Gilchrist after the wicketkeeper announced his retirement on Saturday.

Gilchrist, 36, called time on his career the day after becoming the record holder for most Test dismissals with 414 and will bow out after next month's triangular series with India and Sri Lanka.

"Thank God for that," joked England one-day captain and Test batsman Collingwood as he reflected on Gilchrist's decision.

"He's amazing," the Durham all-rounder, a member of the England side thrashed 5-0 in Australia during the 2006/07 Ashes added.

"From the start of his career played with freedom, expressed himself and had no fear of failure."
