People rightly pointing out that many people are more deserving (fact) doesn't make them haters, you look bloody silly in the process as well.Oh and also it's always been a mixture of walks of life getting the award. Here's how Wikipedia describes the previous dozen:
Pull your heads in and get a grip, haters
At least Goodes is a Nunga
Shhhhh.Disagreeing with the decision does not amount to racism
because he is a modest well loved man, and that's coming from a Docker's fan! it seems that very few non-Sydney supporters are happy with this decision. He got the Young Western Australian of the Year Award in 2009 which is a somewhat similar award. Where was all the outrage back in 2009 when Wirrapanda won that?
Even Mark bloody Robinson is more enlightened than a lot of you
Mark Robinson @Robbo_heraldsun
1hStill have a long way to go when Adam goodes is criticised for being AOTY.. why can't people be proud and not pricks about it

Again, that's not an observation limited to this particular year.People rightly pointing out that many people are more deserving (fact) doesn't make them haters, you look bloody silly in the process as well.
I'd wager that there is other players who do more work in the community then Goodes.
I just hate that what he did to that girl and her family is being rewarded, the girl and her family were crucified nationally and many (including me) think he misunderstood the meaning of what she said, it was clearly a dumb thing to say but given her age I reckon he should have given her the benefit of the doubt after he'd cooled down, but he didn't.
Again, that's not an observation limited to this particular year.
How much community work do you reckon John Farnham did for instance?
I trust all these people were equally outraged about every previous winner who didn't cure a disease or something.
I can think of a representative of our great game that deserved it more but I would have all the Sydney supporters accuse me of being racist. The interesting thing I find here is that hardly anyone (if indeed anyone) has shown the slightest bit of pride or happiness in the fact that a representative of our great game has won this award.
Thank you. Was about to say exactly the same thing. The interesting thing I find here is that hardly anyone (if indeed anyone) has shown the slightest bit of pride or happiness in the fact that a representative of our great game has won this award.

Well of course people consider others to be more deserving. It's par for the course in awards such as this.I can think of a representative of our great game that deserved it more but I would have all the Sydney supporters accuse me of being racist.
The other problem I have with naming Goodes AOTY is that the award COULD have been used to recognize an unsung Aussie who's been toiling away for years without any reward.
Bigfooty is a pretty weird cross section. You asked anybody in this thread who Bruce Robinson was at midday todayand they wouldn't have a clue. Probably a similar story about how much they cared about Australian of the Year. Now there's genuine outrage that the cancer thingy bloke didn't win it.I trust all these people were equally outraged about every previous winner who didn't cure a disease or something.

Well said. The interesting thing I find here is that hardly anyone (if indeed anyone) has shown the slightest bit of pride or happiness in the fact that a representative of our great game has won this award.
How hard is it to disagree with the selection of Goodes whilst at the same time saying how fantastic it is for our great game?Because hardly anyone here seems to agree with the decision. If my own brother won the award I'd still disagree with it because I wouldn't think him to be deserving.
Because I was talking about the nature of this award. Which by definition includes past winners. Why would an AFL forum give 2 hoots about John Farnham winning?
