I think Kenny is spot on.

He's missed a month of footy so that's more than 1 a game as I was saying.

Is also a proven big game player with 2 goals in the GF last year and a number of excellent pack marks in finals games. 4 goals Saturday night.

obviously pav is better, but hunter is decent in his own right.

but....2006 finals goals: hunter 6
pavlich 4

hahahaha.....seriously though, pavlich has played in 3 finals without yet exuding his matchwinning ability, something he'd need to do to be considered absolute elite.

Is Hunter the sleazy, scragging Weagles back who takes cheap shots at his opposition when they aren't looking - and looks like a rat with a bad haircut? Wouldn't a better comparison be between Hunter and Brodie Holland?

Well, I wouldn't say a joke as such. The AA selectors always look for the Best 22 players, then try and fit them into a position - it happens each and every year. It's pretty much arse-about, but that's how they do it. So from that POV, then he was probably in the best 22 players in the country that year; he was a key defender back then; they didn't pick a true FB; so voila - there you go - Pav's the AA FB. If it was a one-off then maybe I would say, yes it was a joke, but they do it every year, so based on their track record, then no, not really.

For arguments sake, I'll concede that Pavlich deserved his 2002 AA spot. But I wont wear it when its cited as a point highlighting his versatility that they stuck him in at FB. Like you say, that was more a case of "well we have to stick him somewhere..."

Cheap point... more-or-less irrelevent in that overall argument comparing Hunter & Pavlich.

Like I said earlier, give me Pavlich every day. But I like Hunter because he's a big game player who doesn't shirk the issue, as too is Pavlich.

Why, beacause he is more than a handful when playing up forward?

I have no problem admitting that at stages he definately can cause us some problems when he goes up forward, but i cannot stand him. Just his face.. it annoys the hell outta me. The thing that really set it off for me was when he played on Micky in the QF and after he got the free kick he goes "HA" to Mickys face.. i think i just burst out laughing at how immature he is.

Yep, the one the revered accused rapist attempted to claw the eyes out of. You know, that guy.

Oh yes, how could i forget about his sleazy rat face.

If I had to pick one of those for the regular season I'd choose Pav. But if I had to choose one of them for a final it would be Hunter by a mile.

So that is 1 contested mark per game on average

Sorry to be pedantic but if arguments are based on facts then the facts should be correct.

My turn to be pedantic, but he has played 18 home and away games (20 including finals). Maybe the 19 contested marks you quoted,

inlcuded finals games.

If not, I win.

Gee, I wish Pav was good enough to play on Grant then run up the ground by himself and kick a couple of goals on a crap defence in a blowout win.

Fair enough. But he was playing as a defender in in 2002, so they found him a defensive position in the AA as he was in the best 22 players that year. Whether or not FB was the appropriate position for him is more the point than whether he was deserved of AA selection as a defender. Hence, I believe that it can be used as an argument for his versatility. He wouldn't have been named as a forward / midfielder that year when he was playing down back. So the fact remains that that he is:

an AA defender (2002)
an AA midfielder (2003)
an AA forward (2005)
a AA "spare" forward (2006)

...and FWIW, Hunter annoys the living crap outta me - but that's mainly because he's good. No-one with a 70s glam-rock faux-hawk mullet and a face like a rat should be allowed to play good football. :(

Talk to me when Pavlich does something in a final.

My bad.16 contested marks in 18 home and away games.

"Come on now, every time Hunter plays he takes at least a couple big pack marks in the forward 50"

For you to "win" he would have to have taken 36 mark contested marks in the forward 50.

Pav - 2002 AA FB; 2003 AA midfielder, 2005 AA CHF, 2006 AA interchange. Now that's versatility! :thumbsu: He made the interchange position his own this year! He's done it all!! ;)

pavlich -2007 AA ruckman. :thumbsu: then he's done it all.

This is a **** stir!
Firstly, I think Hunter is a 'handy' player. Many of these have played the game in the last 100yrs.
Pavlich is a Superstar simple as that.
Pavlich>>>>daylight>>>>Hunter

Look at the stats
Pav 05 AA CHF
Has Hunter, with all his forward abilitys ever been double/triple teamed by opposition?, I think not

Pav 2003 AA midfielder
Hunter...
Any good in the middle? Does he have the motor for it? again I think not

Back man CHB/FB, Once again another unproportinate comparison,
Pavlich was an All Australian FB in 2002, Hunter was doing what at this point in his career. ( not to mention representing his country in 2002-03....as a forward)

Ridiculous comparison, Pav v Reiwoldt is a little more sensible

Except for on the "Big Stage" ie in Finals

Where Hunter >>>>>> Pavlich :)

I would rather Pavlich then Hunter.

Having said that I found this comparison suprising from a statistical point of view only.

http://www.pro-stats.com.au/psw/web/compare_players?tid1=106&pid1=20112&tid2=116&pid2=20280

There is actually not that much between them this year apart from goals but then again Hunter plays mostly as a backman. Granted though that Pavlich plays as a key forward and usually gets the best defender etc.

Usually the best 2 defenders, sometimes even the best 3 defenders. Finals or not, I would like to see Hunter do what Pav does (this year he's kicked 67 goals and taken the 5th most contested marks in the comp) with 2-3 defenders on him every, single week. I am not meaning that as disrespect for Hunter, I just seriously can't see him being anywhere near as effective under those circumstances.
