This is such a shit take.

He was a rookie assistant coach.

I’ve been around long enough to remember the jokers convinced 2006 was all Sumich too. Until he ****ed off to Fremantle that is…

If it’s Simpson’s fault when it’s shit then he sure as hell deserves the plaudits when he takes us to a flag.
Look at him coaching Hawthorn. He gutted their list and now looks to be headed for top 8 1-2 years ahead of schedule. He actually had the balls to cut players like O'Meara and Mitchell, even under contract. Why were players like Sheed and Gaff not offloaded when they had some currency? In fact why has not 1 player been pushed out for draft capital?

Really good coaching tonight, challenged the players after bad kicking in the first three quarters and a depleted midfield well done coaching team. Crap umpiring cost the game HDB In the end

This is so true and this is why Adam got his due thanks. He is the senior coach and he gets the credit when we win the flag.
The problem with our fans is they don’t believe he should be responsible for when it goes crap.

They're all good mates of simmo and he doesn't like being the bad guy.

For every case like Hawthorn 2024 there are cases like North since 2016. Would he (Mitchell) still be a god in your mind if Hawthorn spent a decade in mediocrity because they cut their list too deep?

Hawthorn are still a very young team and sure, they’re in a purple patch, but I would expect them to flag before the season is done.

And if they don't?

Also North isn't the same as a WCE or Hawthorn or Geelong or Collingwood.

How would I know?

The game turned when Ryan went into the middle. Should've been tried earlier obviously but it's something to work with.

Maric coming on also made us more potent moving the ball forward.

The point is, we had far more scoring shots and if we were close to 50% accuracy, we'd have easily won the game.

We'd also have easily won the game if Kelly and Reid were playing instead of Gaff and Sheed but they weren't.

There's only so much you can work with.
Statistically WC are crap!
My point is we need a new coach!

He definitely didn't win it for us but I do believe he unlocked a little 1% intangible which is sometimes what it takes.

Mitchell was revered for his footy brain and understanding of the game. Without needing to join the club and prove himself the players were already salivating about having someone of his stature on their side, guiding them, teaching them.

I think that created some self belief that the process was destined to deliver success and the players were able to get out of their own way a bit and just play footy.

He was the luckiest man alive to survive last year, which all came down to the absurd fact he still had TWO seasons remaining on his contract. It wasn't feasible then to sack him, it is now though.

I don't really think it needs to be done before the end of the year, but i do think it needs to be done.

Have him coach out the season and announce he's "stepping away/resignation" will happen before our final home game, where we can also bid farewell to club stalwarts Sheed, Gaff and Darling. The following week is going to be an annihilation at GMHBA stadium vs the Cats, so you really don't want to end your year with supporters calling for his head, frustrated with the same stale player selection and then finish 2024 on a pantsing.

Move them all on. Pay out Simpson's final year. Go into 2025 with a fresh coach, more youth and some new ideas.

I'm most interested in what the plan is for Simpson. He's been better this year but hasn't done enough to earn an extension at this point. Are we going into next year with him out of contract and allowing the media to hound him all year again? But if we don't, it feels really premature for a two year extension and one year just seems to invite more speculation (look at Freo and JL).

If Simpson isn't the man to take us forward in the medium term (and I don't see how he can be given how long he's been here), then I think we should look at finishing him up. Either give him a big thankyou/farewell at the end of this year or do a 1 year coaching transition in 2025.

Not many coaches are out of contract this year, so 2024 would be a good opportunity to grab the best without competition. Next year could easily see a bunch moved on (us, Saints, Crows, Freo, Port, Melbourne, Bulldogs) which could see some pretty average coaches given a go. The last thing we want to do is stuff the rebuild by getting another Ken Judge in.

When we were an older team than our oppo it's a hard sell

We are literally almost completely reliant on a 19 year old playing out of his skin to win games

This isn’t anything to do with coaching or even selection though.

Can’t select guys that aren’t pushing from below.

There’s zero selection pressure because barely anyone is putting up their hand.

Don't take one line out my what I wrote and then shit on it.

Your above argument doesn't make much sense either, as Mitchell went to the Hawks with a terrible list and he's got them flying. Which supports my argument. Sumich example is the complete opposite.

Mitchell is the reason we won it, his masterwork in the midfield was the difference between winning it and losing it.
As you cut out my original post, I said Simmo had a great career and did really well to get us to up there.
My point was Mitchell was the difference on the day.

I don’t know why people want to sack the coach it’s clear that rocketing up the ladder to the dizzying heights of 16th has given the guys vertigo leading to us losing to a objectively worse team than Fitzroy at home. Luckily we are missing Hewett, Reid, Allen, Hunt and Kelly and for a team that is objectively the worst performed team we have put on the park in the history of our club over the past 2 years we can’t really expect more than 3 wins this year. Our paper thin list is so full of holes that if we are missing two midfielders to injury the whole midfield assumes the fetal position and we get pumped. Have faith guys Simmo has got this. I mean it looks in the last 2 weeks like he hasn’t but it also looked after Melbourne that the last 2 weeks were definite wins. We must like Oscar the Grouch learn to love trash.

What’s funny is that Don Pyke was the reason we were good in 2015, and now he’s back so we should be elite again.

Just can’t make heads or tails of it.
Whether he was or wasn't the reason in 2015, it's a poor argument given that he is... the CEO now and not a coach. I'm not sure who that strawman was for but if you're going to join the protect Simmo phalanx I'm sure there are better cases to argue.

It is fun to assess what is what and Simmo is and what Simmo isn't but in the end West Coast will do what WC does.
Hugely successful club and they will do the "Phoenix " manoeuvre all in good time.
