In 2019 we have 3x players in the top 25 (with one in the top 5) for Tackles in the League.
Those being Yeo(2nd in League), Shuey and Redden.
Unsurprisingly, since then all three have had injuries or recurring injuries keeping them out of the side for extended periods since 2019.

Wonder why our tackling has been rubbish the last few years...

This year has been better - Redden is back into the top 25. (coincides with his consistent year).

Anyone can tackle, clearly tackling has not been demanded from the coaching staff.

Not everyone on a team is going to be an amazing tackler. No club in the comp has all of their best 22 in the top 25 tacklers.
Every club will have a few players that are great, then some that will be capable, then the rest which will depend on the day.

It just happens that out great tacklers have all been injured for extensive periods of time.

Do i think we need to be better in this area, sure.
Do i think we have improved in that area this year, yes definitely.
Do i think Simmo and crew have identified this are an area for improvement, yeah - with Culley coming on board and the signalling of more mids to come in via draft i expect us to improve in this area further.

Great result.

Eh, like I said. It's improved this year but still not as good as we need,

But, to say we haven't been addressing it or ignoring it as a problem i feel is to not look at who was doing our tackling when we did it well and why we have been trash at it since.

Ash Hansen not leaving Melbourne for personal reasons (as per an article on the AFL website talking about GWS coaching candidates).

Bummer, would have liked him back at the club. Not because he's a past player, but because he's highly regarded.

Coming back to assist a 10 year coach unfortunately is not very attractive. Generally hard to have your input listened to with such long term people.

Liking some of the more recent signs good effort and young unswgetting a crack similar signs next year and I’ll be happy

Yeah that’s why we struggled to get Schofield and Knights last year.

Think we might look for some fresh Fwd/Def coaches in the off season? Similar to how we targeted Mid coaches last year?
Some more fresh voices around Simmo can only be a good thing you'd think?

We have a pretty good forward & a decent defender in the team who are both about to retire.........

Maybe we can employ that guy from SAS Australia as a consultant

For example, Jamie Cripps rolls up after the weekly review thinking automatic selection and credits in the bank..........

Sas Ego GIF by Channel 7

I had been thinking the same if they want to stick around the club a while. - development coach roles for sure.

WC player Will Schofield must be delusional

I think the other thing is, when head hunters are used to select a new senior coach somewhere they have a fixation these days with getting somebody who has been working at a club that has been in the top 4 for the last few years and won a flag. The mistaken belief is that if you get somebody from a club that has had recent success then they will be able to recreate the systems that were in place from that club at the new club. It doesn't really work that way. But the head hunters seem to think it does. Thus the fixation with getting an assistant from Hawthorn as your next senior coach that was going on a while ago. But whilst that is one of main criteria club's look for in a senior coach then the assistants looking for a senior coaching gig will be loathe to go to a club outside the top 8, let alone in the bottom 4. Why would Hansen want to give up working at a club that is on it's way from bottom 4/bottom 8 to potentially the top 4 over the next few years, and all the reflected glory that will come his way from being part of that coaching panel to be an assistant coach for us?

Yeah, I mean appointing Hardwick, Simpson, Beveridge and Fagan just because they were involved at that Hawthorn team has really blown up in those teams faces.

People don’t really think through their arguments, do they.
Or some posters troll around trying to deliberately misinterpret others posts in a vain effort to make themselves sound smart.

I didn't say the assistants that came from Hawthorn were bad coaches. I said you can't judge an assistant coach's value and quality based solely on where the last team they coached at finished on the ladder in the last few years. Even if a team is super successfull there is a team of people who have to do their job well for that to happen from the coaching panel to the strength and conditioning staff to the team that make drafting and list/contract decisions. To think you can poach the collective experience and expertise of the people who created that success by poaching an assistant coach and getting them to bring the IP with with them from their old club is folly. But that is the current thinking and given that most of the AFL industry expect us to be bottom 4 for a quite a while to come that will make it hard to get sought after assistants who believe they will be applying for senior coaching gigs in the next 5 years to want to come to us, unless they want to move to WA for other reasons or we offer significantly better terms to them.
