Maybe if I wanted advice on pruning roses I’d listen to this guy

Also

“The noble gesture by the club would be to keep Simpson and clean out the tired board at the end of the year. But that won’t happen.”

This is our current board
• Paul Fitzpatrick (Chairman) - been on the board for 6-7 years. First year as chair
• Elizabeth Gaines (Deputy Chair) - appointed to the board last year
• Ben Wyatt - appointed in 2021
• Rowan Jones - appointed in 2021
• Justin Langer - appointed in 2017
• Terry Bowen - appointed in 2017
• Nicole Moody - appointed in 2021

So 4 board members have been there for 2 years or less. The other three for around 6 years, one of whom is in his first year as chairman

Not exactly a tired board. There’s also a term limit of (I think) 8 years. So if a journalist is going to suggest something, a knowledge of the facts might be handy

Now, if he wanted to suggest the CEO step aside, who is also in the board and has been in his current position for a quarter of a century, then he might have had a point

“tired board” is his nickname for Nesbit

It would be a brave soul to take over the reins while we’re in our current predicament. You want to be able to sell yourself as best you can to win over the best possible suitor. Let Simmo get us around the bend and see out his contract before going shopping for a replacement.

Even if we did make a surge next season I think his time would be up.

The Clarkson development is interesting and affects us. It is possible that Clarkson really does have depression. It is also possible, and probably more likely, that AFL has told him he is going to be lambasted and possibly suspended over yet to be revealed details of the Hawthorn racism saga and suggested he quietly step away and get out of the limelight now before the negative headlines start.

Either way, if this turns into a situation where Clarkson is going to get some kind of pay out and move on from North and working in the AFL for a few years then i am sure North will come knocking on Simpson's door again. If i was Simpson i would take it. North may not be in a greatly better position than us listwise but if he went there he would have a clean slate and would not wear the blame for any previous decisions that resulted in the club being where it is at. He would have two or three years to get results before any real criticism was levelled at him. Versus staying at WCE where there is no clean slate and he will cop blame for the results from the immediate moment forward. I know i would take the North job if it was offered to me i was Simpson and i wanted to keep coaching. It could be an off ramp for both Simpson and the club.

We will have to wait and see how the North thing pans out and if it looks like Clarkson stepping away is mental health related or whether that is smokescreen and whether it looks like he is coming back or not.

Clarkson steps away citing mental health.

“It’s pretty likely he’s been told by the AFL that sanctions are coming. Even though the AFL has publicly pushed for the parties to mediate and that hasn’t happened yet and it’d be pretty damn hard to settle on any sanctions before that happens.”

Another example of “this is likely” = “I want it to be true therefore it is”

Hmm, dunno why Simpson would walk away from WCE, considering he was extended to do the rebuild, especially to North.

North are an absolute rabble, on and off field, and are arguably in an even worse situation than WCE.

Can't see him not seeing out his contract, at the very least.

Why would any coach want to walk away from WCE? Lots of reasons!

Hasn't played a game for WCE yet so no emotional bond established
Maybe he's homesick
Maybe NN recovery taking too long for our immediate needs to climb the ladder
Maybe too many coaches of that age/type on their list
Maybe a like-for-like replacement comes to their club cheaply via gentleman’s agreement or other means

So if Nisbett is on the board and there's an 8 year limit doors that mean the CEO board position is not subject to the time limitation?

Of course any coach would struggle with this shit show, but you say it as though the position we are in isn't due to years of poor decision making and coaching. Simpson cutting out now and saving us 2 years of Nisbett's contract folly would be as good as a priority first round pick imo.

So

So if Nisbett is on the board and there's an 8 year limit doors that mean the CEO board position is not subject to the time limitation?

I think Trev makes his own rules tbh

For a start I don’t think it’s common for a club CEO to also be on the board

There’s a stronger case for Nisbett to retire than for Simpson to leave. At a minimum there should be a succession plan in place for him

My own view is that we should be putting someone in between Nisbett and current Football GM (Gavin Bell) with the plan he would take over as CEO after 12 months or so

Initially he could do a review of sorts across the club which would familiarise him with the way the club operates and also allow a fresh set of eyes to identify areas of improvement
