As squashface posted earlier:

"I want my team to not win so we can pick up a player that might help us win in the future!"
I want my team to lose for an abstract marginal benefit that may not eventuate as I intend. I have big IQ.

I think they have been planning to try and pinch a couple of junk time wins from before the mid point of the season. And to then use those wins as an argument for retaining both Simpson and Nisbett for next year.

I say that because why did they bring back injury prone senior players like McGovern, Cripps and Yeo for the last few games of the year? 99% of the time a club in the situation we were in at the time (i.e. bottom 4 and well out of finals contention) would have cotton wooled the injury prone senior players (recovering from recent serious injuries) for the year to make sure of an uninterrupted pre season for next year. We brought them back. And Simpson was hanging out to get them back and kept talking about them coming back. I think from the moment things started going pear shaped the plan was to focus on the last 5 weeks of the year and if they could pinch a win or two by ambushing tired teams expecting a easy win then that would overshadow everything else that occurred in the first 15 - 18 games of the year.
Yeah but what you think and reality rarely intersect.

The biggest issue with our club is our list. The list management of the club from the end of 2018 for the next three to four years was poor.

I've long been against the Kelly trade, but what is worse is when we could have brought in first and second round picks in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 drafts and we didn't. Particularly not even having a second round pick for two consecutive years has hurt us badly.

We can't complain about our injuries of the past two years as we had such a great run with health for a decade or so prior. Once so many key players got injured, it exposed the lack of depth on the list.

And Petrol being re-signed for two years!? We can't throw all our crabs out in on year but I think one year would have been more than sufficient.

Last week was an aberration and it is worth noting that the flu was going through the team at the time. This week we played more like we did in the weeks before the derby.
Apparently the 5th flu that went through the team for the year, simmo 5 more years and 10 more hungry jacks franchises

Fwiw - the board keeping Simpson is actually the brave/tough position

Because it aligns his success/failure with theirs - Should they sack him and the next coach only lasts 3 years - then that is far less likely to fall upon the board

Should simpson be sacked - losing the players won’t be one of the reasons

I think the biggest issue is that our veterans have become either the picking and choosing sort (Sheed, Darling, Barrass, Ryan, Gaff sorta) or the always injured sort (Gov, Yeo, Shuey, Nic Nat).

Simpson's biggest failure as a coach has been enabling that first group. And I reckon the cleanout and fresh faces basically fixes this.

I'm not really happy with that, because it's a bit late but I understand Simpson favouring those that won him a premiership. That's where a strong footy boss should check those impulses.

And if anything it's been a weak administration that's been the main issue.
Nissie goes, Get a new footy Boss, some new assistants and new S&C and see how it shakes out.
A new batch of draftees, more new kids taking on more ownership of the team.
Can see Simmo coaching out his contract and seeing how it goes.

I reckon the team played their hearts out to show support for their "Under fire "Coach.
They gave club and members a big middle finger and good on them.

Pity that middle finger effort, has been missing for large chunks of the past four seasons.

Actually makes it worse and proves that they decide when them put in and when they cruise.

They should play their hearts every *ing week.

Hey, hey ...easy up VicB.
No reason for players to be giving the club or members middle fingers.....look at it....media spec/hype
Players ever giving fingers to club/members= time to fold
Don't equate what the media say, or punters on here, to what is happening inside the club

I'd honestly give him through next year with a healthy list. No coach was going to look good with having 20 players, like 12 of them being on field starters on the injured list. Clearly he hasn't lost the players and they got done pissing away their best chance at a rebuild before Tassie comes in and takes all the picks...so might as well just keep him around

Yes, there were stories that the playing group were heavily affected by the flu, and it certainly showed. Hough is still down with it. I think last week against freo was somewhat an aberration. Let's see what we dish up next week against the crows.

I really wanna retain Simmo as I think he's the most talented coach we'll get to look after us during the next 2-3 year period of shit. He's great at individual relationships and a great media operator.

The only thing he needs to change in his system is how he treats senior players and the 'A' Team. Maybe that's been partially enabled by our injury crisis, but players like Sheed and Gaff who are in terrible to below average form need to be made to go back to the WAFL. We also don't extend enough opportunities to all of our rookies. I think in part that's because Simmo values running patterns and effort so highly, but I think it contributes to our general footballing malaise.

So a few Senior guys and a few middling guys and a few newbys finally crack it for a bit of cohesion and chemistry and a glimpse of our future and you are unsatisfied?
Tough crowd or it is just that you are never really happy that we have a MUCH needed win?
You must be difficult to buy Chrissy presents for, never satisfied.

Hough wasn’t still out with the flu… he has conjunctivitis
