Behind a paywall of course but had to laugh at the heading of one of the opinion pieces about it being “like a miracle” and emerging from a desert island without a scratch.

Aside from the obvious flair for the dramatic 😂, do they seriously believe Simpson has not been damaged or wounded by the past 2 years and the constant speculation and the past couple of months in particular.

I would think he is relieved (to have the support of the board and continue the job he believes he is capable of doing), but I wouldn’t think for one minute he isn’t aware of the pressure that he faces next season and the real need for improvement in all areas.

I’m sure the West will be certainly there ready to remind him of such 🙄

I’m staggered he’s survived this, but very happy at specifically who it is pissing off so giddy up.

My view has always been that it’s smarter to let Simmo eat a mountain of shit (and this media firestorm has proven that it’s only going to get worse) on and off field while his contract dwindles down, to try and give the next person in the job a better chance at a clean slate and a usable list by the time they get in.

I’m still there, ie Simmo’s days will inevitably run out and we’ll get a fresh face in before the end of this contract, but I think we can all agree that there would be no funnier season to become suddenly quite relevant than next year now.

Ultimately, bringing in another coach when the football department is still a rabble is just setting them up for failure.

Make the right changes this off-season, bring in the right talent and set up a high performance environment again. Then if we make a coaching change in the next couple of years the foundation is there and it isn't a bunch of strangers trying to function together.

First thing simmo probably did was call Gary to tell him we're taking Harley. That would get hairy Gary going. Would love to see his face. They should cross to Gary's house on draft night to get his reaction.
Yeah I wonder if Simmo staying has implications around whether WCE pick Reid or not?

Perhaps he was pushing for a sacking so hard because it may be known in certain circles that Simmo would be more likely to push for Reid over Curtin, considering his regular remarks around improving the midfield.

Lyon acted as if Simmo had kicked his dog, or something.

I’m wondering if he was claiming certain things to the Reid family last week that haven’t played out and is pissed he’s looking like a fool. Seemed agitated
I imagine he's probably sold them on the premise that WCE are an unstable rabble, whereas they've just proven the exact opposite.

WTF is the subtext of the front page of Tomorrow's West?
Apart from them being worried about having WCE loving current and potential subscribers, having less reasons to subscribe if West Coast stuck with the same old.

“…despite months of speculation (BY US) that he’d be sacked”

Which is what the club will do now. Instead of holding the man responsible for our mess the club will sack and change every other area abd convince all in sundry it was their fault. You watch them all fall and take the bullet for Simmo.
That seems the modern way these days, it’s always the others fault.
Anyway Simmo can coach as we know so hopefully he pulls his finger out, stops being their mate and reinvents himself.

The crowd reaction when Simmo went up on the big screens on Saturday night showed the sentiment of the members.

This year was a shit sandwich but Simmo wasn't the lunch lady. I reckon we will trouble a few next year and have a dip at breaking out of the bottom four.

Are you of the belief that the fitness department reports to the senior coach like our SGIO-chanting friend, or do you just not think the massive injury list was the main driver?

Course it’s possible Simmo was gone with The Derby being the straw.

But then given the improved performances either side, not to mention the dramas (and $$) of getting a new coach, that the Board came around to the view that we could be adequately competitive with a more reasonable level of injuries.

In other words it was injuries not Simmo that was largely to blame.

Besides they can still boot him a year early.

It’s interesting how some in the media are claiming the board has done a backflip

Pre-derby there was little to suggest Simpson would be sacked - not to be confused with the fact plenty thought he should be. By and large, it appeared he had the boards support

It was only after the, admittedly terrible, derby result people in the media started claiming he was gone. That included the up until then fence sitting Duffield

Turns out the board stayed true to their constantly stated position of backing Simpson. Sacking him would have been the backflip

There was entirely justifiable reasons to sack him and, payout aside, that would have been the easy decision.

Backing the coach in these circumstances is not the correct script for our media friends who love a scalp before writing their epitaphs on what a great bloke he was

In an industry where contracts are seen as increasingly meaningless, the board has honoured theirs. It also shows they were aware of what was coming, probably not quite as bad as it’s been, and have been planning for it’s eventuality

I think we all know who's really to blame...
