isn't there a max payout of 600K to a coach? Didn't they introduce this so minnow clubs dont keep ******* themselves with a baseball bat?

"Clarkson, who spent most of his playing career at Arden Street including 93 games across the 1987-95 seasons, is reportedly seeking $1.6 million a year on his next contract.

That would blow away the current top coaches’ salaries. With the 2023 soft cap set for $6,950,000, it means the Kangaroos would be spending 23 per cent of their entire budget on Clarkson, reducing their ability to staff up around him.

For comparison, Sydney’s John Longmire is on an estimated $1m to $1.2m a year, Richmond triple premiership coach Damien Hardwick on an estimated $900,000 to $1.1 million, and West Coast’s Adam Simpson on an estimated $800,000 to $900,000."

Simmo to throw the magnets around for the last few rounds

Shuey, Redden, and Andrew Gaff are among the contenders to be handed new roles in the tail-end of the season in order to give younger players more midfield responsibilities.
Forward Liam Ryan could be given more stints in the midfield after enjoying successful bursts during the club's 2018 flag campaign, while defender Liam Duggan might be handed an on-ball role.

Remember meeting Jako and Sumich when I was a kid and they were both very reticent about signing an autograph for me. They initially refused, then my grandmother tore strips off them for failing to meet their obligations as role models and they gave in, very grudgingly.

To be fair to them though they were just trying to enjoy a quiet game of mini golf in peace, they weren’t on the clock. Poor blokes.

Interesting, we have soft cap issues yet our coach is paid about $300kpa less than coaches with similar experience.

Wants to try more youth on ball....suggests Duggan and Ryan

Simpson didn’t suggest Duggan or Ryan. The only move he actually named was Barrass forward, which got nixed when Gov got injured.

I’ve not got an answer for this this season, but historically the soft cap has always been a tax on Non Victorian clubs trying to mitigate their handicap.

Want to catch a direct flight instead of two connecting ones? Soft cap.

Need to pay a coach more to move across country and uproot their life? Soft cap.

I’m assuming all chartered flights are covered by the AFL given Covid, so no idea why we’d be struggling with it this season if indeed we are.

It just feels like our off field staffing is still a bit messed up. Coaching staff look OK, but we've got two plonkers sharing the general manager of football role, instead of having a strong personality who can keep the coaches honest. Let's not even open up the medical/S&C stuff either.

I think there will be some casualties in the off season. If Simpson is staying, and if we would have to pay him out 3 years to sack him then he definately is staying, then they will make a sacrifical lamb of somebody else. The person they sacrifice may or may not deserve it but it doesn't matter. Thats how big organisations roll. The bosses need to look like they are doing something in response to the bad outcomes. Usually it is the assistant coaches who get the sack but they already did that last year. So i reckon middle management people like Vozzo or people with similar positions in the hierarchy will be in the gun.

??

The two assistant coaches that left got poached by other clubs.

Your handle on reality is, umm, not strong.

How do you know why they left? It didn't look to me like the club was trying particularly hard to keep them. I would say 90% plus of the time when assistants leave a club it is because they were either sacked or encouraged to go by the club they are at, excluding circumstances where they offered a higher position elsewhere such as senior coach. Regardless of how it is presented to the public. They will always present it as having been the persons choice to leave.

And it’s only getting not-stronger…

The two most highly rated assistant coaches leave. One of them so highly rated he’s being talked about in relation to the vacant head coaching jobs. The other one was announced as joining the coaching staff of Sam Mitchell, the footy genius solely responsible for our 2018 flag, before there was even an inkling he would leave the club.

But yeah we secretly sacked both of them, and kept Luke Webster on. Because of reasons.

In other words you have nothing to back up your claim that it is an established fact that they both left suddenly of their own accord other than your own personal opinion that Sam Mitchell, a first year coach whose team is currently 13th on the ladder, is such a renowned coaching genius that it is obvious that one of the coaches left working for a Premiership coach with nearly 10 years senior coaching experience to go work for a rookie coach because he thought he would learn more from the rookie coach? Great argument. People generally don't leave jobs to move sideways to the same job on the same money with the same responsibilities at a different organisation unless they think their job security isn't all that great at the organisation they are at. Or they are very, very unhappy at the organisation they are at.

He’s Victorian. It was reported at the time that Mitchell had poached him.

Do you have anything to back up your “90 per cent of assistants are sacked” figure that you pulled directly out of the sky?

Can you explain why we’d sack the two most highly rated guys on the panel?

Jaymie Graham, who has removed himself from the GWS coach search after declining interviews as he wants to continue learning under Longmuir, was sacked by West Coast and is staying at Fremantle because it’s the only job he can get.
