Yep pretty much. Hoping they use any parts of the eastern that they can, even if it's a couple of bays. Basically they'll have a "normal capacity" Adelaide Oval, but using the massive southern instead of the Chappells.
Would imagine the hill will be open for public use on AFL match-days, and people can use it if they feel like it. We all saw how jam-packed it was for Port vs Melbourne.
Western won't have the corporate facilities of the other two, but I think it will be adapted pretty well to be similar standard. Plus, there's a permanent back area behind it before you even open onto #2 Oval that they can utilise.

And yes, the southern and eastern are higher than the western, and the southern is deeper because it houses everything needed on that side, as there will be no "back area" behind that stand like the western has.

what were the other choices. outside or watch on TV? the old AO was hardly crawling with seating options. members, 20 people in the bradman stand, a couple of thousand in the Chappell stands.

True point. I was jammed onto the southern mound and nobody seemed to mind, except for the fact they were near the guy who chundered all over the walkway.
I'd imagine early-season and later-season games, especially day games, it could be quite popular.
Wait and see I guess but really it's only a small percentage of the capacity. My bet is it will depend on the weather and the size of the crowd.

I have reasonably extensive experience in stadium venues (mainly in Aus and US). Many US catering managers use to drool when hearing us talk about Cricket events.

Sure Adelaide Oval might only have one 5 day test match and two ODIs each year for a total of 7 days... but say only 4 those days a "full" patronage (first 3 days of the test and an Aussie ODI). This might not seem like no comparison to say AFL which has 22 days of events... but the killer for making $ on game day is the attendance time.

A person attending the cricket (either test of ODI) is likely to have between 6-10 hours TIA (Time In Attendance) on game-day. A person attending the AFL that TIA drops to about 2-4 hours. People spending 2-4 hours TIA are much less likely to consume and spend $ at an event, because they can easily eat/drink before and after the event. People spending 6-10 TIA are much more likely to consume some type of products, even if they BYO... anywhere from a $4 drink to $50 on food and drinks throughout the day. Also because the cricket events are once a year... people are more likely to "make a day" of it and spend more than on a fortnightly H&A game.

The following is simply a hypothetical comparison...

Cricket
- 20,000 people for 4 days = 80,000
- 10,000 people for 3 days = 30,000
- average spend $20 per person
= 110,000 * $20
= $2.2 million

AFL
- 35,000 people * 11 = 385,000
- 19,000 people * 11 = 209,000
- average spend $5
= 594,000 * $5
= $2.97 million

* the above is before deducting things like running costs etc, which would impact the AFL more due to their event spread.

"** AFL gets nearly 6 times more people to their games, but people spend no where near as much."

Source??? My 1st hand experience, worked as a Software Engineer (specialising in reporting) for 7 years developing Point-of-Sale software primarily for the Venue industry www.questpos.com.au (since acquired by NCR), but changed industries about 6 years ago.

Can't give you any links that will support the above, so take me at my word or not. :)

Source: I go to the cricket, get there at 8, play starts at 10.30 and finishes at 5.30 when I leave = 9.5 hours
I go to the footy, get there at 2, game starts at 2.40 and finishes at 5 when I go home = 3 hours.
At the cricket I need breakfast, lunch and snacks, and lots of coke
At the footy I need snacks and a coke per half.

With the piss poor crowds the cricket is now getting due mainly to the live telecasts against the gate they would have to spend a lot more than $20.00 a head to match what is spent by a 40 - 50.000 AFL crowd!

Since 2003: http://www.austadiums.com/sport/crowds.php

AFL Average: 36.3k
Test Average: 23.7k
ODI Average: 24.3k

EDIT: whatever crowds might be dropping off recently in ODIs is being recaptured in T20s.

Really makes you see the scale of the project
Oh and the SIZE of those lightheads! Gawd!

The Ashes Test where all of the Southern Stand and a portion of the Eastern stand is meant to be finished is only 9 months away. The first AFL game at a supposedly completed stadium is a little over 12 months away. This shit is coming fast (although probably not fast enough when I'm sitting at that shit hole at West Lakes in July).

Is West Lakes a bad suburb? On google maps, it's pretty close to the water and not too far from the CBD. In most terms, doesn't that equal at least a decent-ish suburb? I always thought it was out in the sticks like Waverley.

West Lakes the suburb is not bad, some nice places through there. The main problem is the only public transport out there is bus. Adelaide Oval, in location terms, has more public transport options, as it is close to the central rail station and trams.

West Lakes isn't a bad suburb at all. Not my cup of tea, but by no means a shit hole. In terms of distance, it's not a lot different to say the distance between Perth and Fremantle. But like Fremantle it is at a western extremity of town, so by no means anywhere central and besides a a shopping centre and few restaurants there isn't a lot else around. Public transport is an issue and the car is still king which creates major traffic congestion (for Crows games at least;)). The stadium is also very tired.

The problem with West Lakes is it is code in footy-speak for AAMI Stadium. That's the shithole. Seating bowl, not colosseum style. Not great access transport-wise. Etc etc. West Lakes itself is pretty good.

It would be a bit like if we had a stadium in Hillarys. It's not that it's in a bad suburb, it's just that it's a pain in the arse for 80% of the population to get to.

As long as you can put up with the sea sulphur stench and nothing being their except houses (a shopping centre and a few other things is F*ck all), it's not a bad suburb, houses there are quite nice. I personally hate it and wouldn't want to live there. "Excruciatingly Mundane" is the best way to describe it.

Auditor-General wants Stadium Management Authority funds to be repaid

Trust the belief SA fans in Adelaide Oval proves the benefit to SA footy it needs to be !

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/na...nds-to-be-repaid/story-fndo471r-1226592730178

The SMA is part of the problem
The blind point for the Crows and Power is not having a seat on the SMA is being denied transparency on how the authority operates - and how it manages the overheads at Adelaide Oval.

Pre-fab construction... spend a shit load of time getting all the foundations right and once it is... BOOM it goes up quicker than a teenage boy in an adult shop.

Yep, the only way the could really do it here, with the time constraints. I don't see the point in doing it any other way for a stadium either TBH.
Counting down :D

Not sure about Port but the Crows have said on numerous occasions they will sell GA memberships for the hill. Would suspect there would be very few of these memberships available though

Port Adelaide will be selling GA memberships for the hill.

Contrasts with the Crows who dont seem to understand the SANFL are trying to attract Port fans, gosh they want Crow fans to reject Adelaide Football Club & join the SANFL.

Ummm the Adelaide Football Club does manage the Essential Crows Membership (likewise Port with Essential Power). The only membership in that article that is not managed by the respective clubs is the Premier Membership (which is still managed by the SANFL). That is, the clubs take the money for the Essential Crows/Power Memberships and all correspondence, follow up, management is managed by the clubs.

Essential Crows/Power Members are NOT SANFL Members.

So how are Essential Crows/Power Members rejecting their clubs?
