Shirley was on Ablett, but Gazza's work rate off the ball is incredible, he runs his opponents into the ground week in, week out. :thumbsu:

Sewell towelled him up Round 1 after he was put on him in the 2nd half. The fact is most teams don't put a hard tag on him, but rather a head-to-head tag like Stuart Dew or Chance Bateman. ;)

Sure he did. It's easy to deny your opponent possessions when he's sitting on the pine for half a quarter.

Dragged for a reason, Sewell was killing him. Stopped his possessions and got plenty of the ball himself.
Ablett doesn't get "dragged".

If Sewell was so good why didnt he play on him all game? Ablett slaughtered you. 23 touches in the first half, damage was done. Was benched in junk time. Still picked up another 13 touches for the rest of the game despite being benched.

If that is "killing him" you have very low standards.

We had Stewie Dew on him. Obviously we weren't going for a tag on Ablett at that time ;)

Sewell had a lot more and was tagged by Cameron Ling when Ablett was dragged.

I don't know what you think, but I thought Buddy had a shocker today. I know he kicked a few goals, but how many times is he going to try and beat a couple of players only to get tackled and pinged? Or stream down the wing and kick it to the opposition? Has already large head has grown substantially over the offseason, along with his belly.

Yep LLD, us Hawks are getting frustrated with the constant playing on and taking on the opposition every single time.
Occasionally he gets away with it and it looks great. He needs to mix it up - take them on sometimes and go back over the mark others. Just to keep the defenders guessing.

His belly does look a tad bigger, he enjoyed a fruitful off-season me thinks.

Back on topic I don't think i've ever seen a midfielder possess as many tricks as Gazza has, is there a box that he doesn't tick? What could he possibly improve on?

You're so full of shit. I'm surprised you haven't started a thread saying Cyril had a better game than Ablett yesterday.

So Ablett was "dragged" after having 13 touches in less than a half of footy. He must have been having a shocker.

Seriously HP, Sewell is a good player, but time and time again Ablett proves elusive. in the last two games he is averaging 34.5 touches against you. If Sewell makes Ablett his bitch as you would have us believe, why won't you tag the leagues most important player? Another genius Clarko tactic no doubt.

What a load of crap. Ablett was BOG with 35 posessions and 1.2. His only quiet quarter was the last when he was being rested up forward and on the bench.

Some teams don't put hard tag on him but whether they do or they don't, he still manages to pick up 30+ possessions. This year he's copped less because teams are trying to beat Geelong in different ways. They're not winning the battles either.

Sewell tagged Bartel in the GF. Ablett was left to his own devices and didn't really hurt us. I think we had Bateman on him for a bit, but that was more of a head to head tag. In Round 1 we put Sewell on him and he was shut down, while Sewell got plenty of his own ball. That will probably be the way to go in the future.

I think this about sums him up. He's got pace, strength, evasiveness, perfect disposal, the ability to play both inside and outside, the ability to kick goals and most of all the consistency to dominate week in, week out. He really is the complete player. This is why people are comparing him to his dad. Everyone except the absolute trolls get it.

The better comparison would be Leigh Matthews. Rover who went to play in the forward pocket towards the end. The AblettSr. comparisons are only made because they are related. Completely different type of player.

Stopped reading here.

He got most of his possessions going head to head with Stewart Dew. Sewell towelled him up in the 2nd half.
You failed to respond to any of the points I made. Ablett's 3rd quarter was no worse than his first half. His final quarter was spent mostly up forward, where the ball was rarely travelling, and being rested on the bench. How did he get BOG if he was towelled up for an entire half?

Most likely on the strength of his first and the fact that Geelong ended up winning the game. Sewell beat him in the second half there, though. I'm sure he'll go to Ablett again in Round 17, but for the entire game. Sewell did a similar job on Judd when he was at his peak. Kept him to 26 touches, and got 26 himself.

You're amazing Podgey - how do you manage to ignore the bulk of my points and expect I'll not notice?

What did I ignore this time?

Another interesting point. They're saying Junior will be as good as his dad when his career's over . . . but he needs another 700+ goals in his next 200 games to match Leigh Matthews.

Does this mean Matthews definitively over Ablett?

Edited for accuracy.

What did you miss? Just something I said twice that is vital to my argument

Podgy Hodge, I don't think you understand what a 'towelling' is.
Il explain it to you.

13 possesions in one half of footy with a hard tag is not a towelling, you will probably find Ablett picks up a few votes in that game even though Sewell 'towelled him up'.

16 possessions with 4 kicks from being tagged all game is a towelling, Mitchell shut out of the game.

Get it now?

:)
