Adelaide's decline

Dangerfield is the only one on that list who I would believe if he said hand on heart money was not the primary motive for his move. These guys were all getting huge offers which I don’t blame them for accepting, I’d do the same. The fact is it was unrealistic for us to match them all under the cap with the list we had.

Tex, Talia, Sloane, Danger, Tippett, Lever, McGovern, Davis all on $700k+, Jacobs and Betts on big money too, what club could have afforded to retain that many players commanding that sort of coin? You mentioned GWS, there are some parallels.

There is a major problem at Adelaide in player retention. I don't know why but it's a real thing and goes well past money. Too many players have wanted out and it has zero to do with $, something isn't right and hasn't been for years, if you have a happy club then players choose to stay a lot of the time.

Jacobs, betts and Jenkins were players not worth retaining. You are in a re build so any $$ savings is worth it and also picks.

Greenwood i think was a good deal for GC but another that wasnt worth keeping unless you got rid on BCrouch and needed senior players to stay.

Danger is the big one, he left to go home and is getting paid 500-600k at Geelong but is arguably the best player in the league for the past 5-6 years. Just lost so much in picks and players all that once, that this bottoming out was destined to happen.

To think crows have never bottomed out in the past and still managed to make the GF in 2017 shows the recruiting and development in that period was huge.

Port are actually a good example of this, particularly in circumstances where it is the same city.

Money certainly is a big factor as well as number of years..have you not seen this one

Ok, well outside of centre clearances the stats tell a different story, but there really is no point getting into a slinging match over this (especially on the umpiring as it was bad for both sides) as we are both clearly biased and it doesn’t matter anyway as the Saints won and that won’t change.
Isn’t that the problem with half of your playing group? Too concerned with stats and not what is/was actually happening? How many roving goals did the saints kick vs how many did the crows kick? How many on the run goals did the saints kick vs how many the crows kicked?

Not denying we‘ve had culture and governance issues over the past few years that have needed rectifying, but it’s naive to think money hasn’t been the biggest driver for most of these players departing.

We drafted and developed talent exceptionally well in the late 2000’s/early 2010s. People have often remarked what an incredible team we would have had if all of these players had stayed. What is often missed is the reality of how the Crows were supposed to pay all of those players market value. Keen to hear your thoughts on this.

Everyone knows Adelaide over paid players to be there, and they are now reaping those decisions.

In saying that id much rather be a club that contends, falls and re builds. Essendon just finish middle of the pack every year and do **** all.

But how though? Is the interesting question.

2011-12 we were the pits, but somehow it's come through looking like that.

As I've said before, I think Adelaide's problem, which has been a problem for a while has been their fairly one-dimensional midfield. The Crouch brothers, while okay individually are too similar to each other. Sloane also isn't that extra point of difference as he mainly succeeds through grunt, not polish. Guys like Atkins and Laird can't do much if the midfield isn't cooking.

Their good season in 2017 was IMO built on the back of really good forward play by one of the best forwardlines in the league. Betts, Walker, Lynch, Cameron and Jenkins was a fairly good forwardline especially when games were being played on their terms. Problem is, Jenkins has been found out as a HFF in a KPFs' body who beats up on weak sides, and Walker and Betts have declined due to form and age. Cameron has left the building. I think for a side to be regularly performing it needs to rely on good midfield play, not hoping for a forwardline to get hot.

Adelaide have often been a team which overachieves. I remember around 2005-2006, their midfield wasn't in any way elite yet they still were up the top of the ladder, only to struggle during finals against better sides. They lost two finals against West Coast because the eagles' midfielders were just better. They need to develop a midfield which is varied.
Otherwise good points but (and was before my time) but surely McLeod Roo Goodwin Edwards was elite.

Gibbs not on big money.

Don't sleep on Hamill and Worrell potentially being better than Kennedy, De Konig, O'Brien in the Gibbs trade either.

Hamill looks like he has some speed but Gibbs is finished. He's getting paid 600k+ a season and he's still contracted for 2021. It's probably the costliest recruiting blunder in Crows history.

Geelong won multiple flags keeping keeping a side full of stars together. Ditto Hawthorn. If your club has s good culture, you keep the core of the team together, regardless of salary cap pressure.

Everyone who leaves my club leaves for more money, everyone who stayed took unders - says fans of every club, and it is garbage.

We offered Eddie a pay rise to leave Carlton. I’m sure it was a big factor. Again, naive to think money isn’t the biggest driver for most player movement in the AFL. No different to any industry.

There are 18 clubs out there who all have players being offered more money to play elsewhere, and yet the Crows above all other non-expansion clubs seem to lose the most quality players. The only naive one around here is you for thinking that's just a coincidence.

They need to pray someone offers Brad Crouch 750k plus

I can’t see anyone offering that much atm
One of the Vic Clubs might be crazy enough to offer him $600,000 a year for 3 years. I dont know who though. You cant rule something like that out.

Freo offered Colin Sylvia $450,000 a year for 3 years as a free agent in the end of 2013. Only positive was it wasnt like a typical freo trade of 1994-2006 as we would of offered a 1st rounder to trade to get a guy like him.
