I think you could make a case for not playing Newchurch if we had gun small forwards already in our team, like Betts and Cameron.

But we don't. We have Murphy, Rowe and McHenry running around. The bar to play AFL as a small forward in our side has probably never been lower

Just pointing out that it will be very difficult for us to hang onto Rowe given that he's way better than the current AA or near AA forward pocket
Let's not fool ourselves here, talent was always there with Stengle but it's very obvious his saviour was Eddie Betts taking up his development coaching role at the Cats that led to Tyson getting another shot at it. It's no coincidence that Eddie signed on with Geelong in early October and that the Cats signed Tyson on as a delisted free agent in November after AFL clubs passed him over earlier in the MSD.

It's a worry that a player had to leave our club to find better support

Second, if the talent was there with Stengle but the other stuff wasn't... where does our club rank talent in its list of valuable traits?

Personal responsibility comes into it unfortunately for Stengle who was on his 4rd stroke with the club wasn't he?
Ask soon as Eddie left for Melbourne he was in trouble, let's hope Eddie has a long tenure at the Cats for Stengle's sake. Geelong is not the greatest City to be in if young people are inclined to go off the rails.

I wonder what support Matty Stokes had?

I think that many recommending the promotion of Newchurch have not watched him closely enough. Admittedly, he can kick a few goals, but his MO is that he does very little apart from that. Can we afford zero effort/output apart from a couple of opportunities in the square?

To be fair, in exactly one SANFL game this year he played a complete game, with running, tackling, and goalkicking, so he can do it, but that was a big exception. I think he needs to stay in SANFL until he is more consistent with effort. I'm sure we don't want to see him spend an AFL game mostly ball/opponent watching and choosing when to go. ;)
If he kicks 3 goals and gets 10 possessions he has done his job. Cyril never got many more than 10 possessions but he made them count. Not saying he is anywhere close to Cyril at present but you get the point. Newchurch in a better system should perform better than in the SANFL imo. We need his pace in our forward line as well as it stretches defences.

When you say Cyril "never got many more than 10 possessions", he averaged 15.06 per game and only had 22x sub-10 disposal games across his 189 game career. He had 20+ disposals in 28 games.

Cyril's career was just a bit better than you seem to think it was.

Interesting comparison

2010 Stokes gets arrested on a drugs charge. Charged with possession and trafficking.

2011 plays in his second premiership for Geelong. Hmmmm.

Kicks a couple of hundred goals for them, retires in 2015. Later employed by the Cats in a player engagement role.

Pretty good support I'd say.

Yeah I knew his possessions weren't high. The point is mercurial players don't need high possessions. I rate Cyril up there with McLeod as the two best indigenous players I've seen.

It would be nice to have a small forward who can kick goals for a change...other than Rachelle.

McHenry, Rowe and Murphy have kicked 15 goals between them this year, essentially a goal every second week each. Not enough.

Newchurch, Rachelle, McAdam as our 3 'smalls' works for me. Add McHenry as as defensive (that's what he is) small forward and it's looking more potent.

IIRC, he was sent packing from the club for a few months and told to 'get a real job' and then train after that...just to emphasis what a privileged life he was living.

4th???…

I’m very happy for someone to correct me but..

1 x drink driving charge
1x caught with bcrouch with a bit of coke in possession

And a photo of him in front of a plate at a party with a white substance on it.. which provided absolutely no evidence that any officer of the law could have used to see him charged with anything..

What was the fourth?..

So did Josh Jenkins. Didn't stop him having a career.
Whilst I gave your comment a “like” it does need to be said that, in oder to put himself in position to get all of those “Joe the goose” type goals, JJ did a ****n heap of gut running and hard bloody work..

In regards to the poster you were responding to.. he’s been caught out bullshitting about one of our youngsters.. claiming he gets “cheap goals” (whatever that means) he’s been asked to back up his bullshit with something substantive.. and all he’s managed so far is a pissy little claim of “oh, a couple of his goals against Norwood were easy!”..

So I guess, at this point, someone should get hold of young Tariak and let him know that next time he’s about to kick one of these so called “cheap goals” he should first stop and ask those around him if he deserves to do so.. and hand the ball to his opponent, if the answer in return, is a resounding no!..

The desperate lengths that poster goes to in order to defend the club and its list management, selection decisions and the old guard of players, and has done for a long time now, on virtually any matter either points to him being a person employed by the club.. or a clueless fool..

my moneys on the second option..

I would be happy if he came in and kicked 1-2 goals a game. Would be a huge upgrade on what Murphy/Rowe/Mchenry are currently providing on the scoreboard.

Would prefer Cook over McHenry. Cook is so smart around goals and that 4 pronged goal threat along with Walker, Fogarty, Thilthorpe/Gollant makes us much harder for opp defences. McAdam, Rachele, Newchurch, Cook just need to make sure they lock it in as well.

Correct..

Mchenry and Murphy either need to be played in the middle.. or not played at all.

Neither of the them are even close to being classed as effective small forwards..
