Don't think anyone is suggesting the release was on par with majority of games - we all know the release was a crapfest. We're more pointing out that it's not out of the ordinary to see games in that state - whilst it may be bottom of the barrel, it's not something anyone in this thread hasn't seen before. And instead of just locking onto the broken release, we're appreciating the constant efforts to fix it. Imagine they just went full 2k on us and said "it's too broken to bother with" and left us with a broken mess like 2k20.

I don't know, I may have a warped view on things having studied and worked in the field of rehabilitating criminals, so I have a mindset that whilst you can't forget mistakes, the actions that come after a good chunk (definitely not all) of them are the true telling force of a person or an experience. Whilst I understand and have varying levels of agreement with every point of view in this thread, I am in the camp of judging BigAnt on their efforts to repair what they've done, not just keeping knocking them down for their original mistake. The beauty of a forum though, we all have our own point of view and opinion.

Don't disagree with any of this, it is good they are working to fix it. I disagree with their method in pumping out virtually untested patches, as this should really only be something for an early access game, not a full retail release.

A lot of the blowback is merely because when a lot of us saw this coming, we were shouted down in here by posters and Ross alike.

Positive but empty posts about the game are celebrated, negative but empty posts about the game draw personal attacks from fellow posters and BA. It would be nice if both opinions were allowed, and I think it is a ridiculous standard that posts should need to be constructive if they want to communicate someones dismay. This is a discussion forum, not a tech support channel.

I'll still pump out videos of things as I see and experience them, come at me world!!!

This 1000%

It is fantastic they are fixing it and I have said it time and time again their cricket games are bloody good and I know that eventually this footy game will be very good , especially graphically with the kits and surrounds etc.

If you buy any form of product and it is faulty or not as advertised you take it back and get a refund or warranty. You expect something to work when you purchase it, why should the gaming industry be any different.

I know with WWE and NBA obviously they do updates/patches as they go and fix any issues that arise but outside of WWE20 these games were playable with all modes available and able to play on day 1 with improvements along the way. This game wasn't really in a playable state on day 1 and still to this day the patches aren't just "tweaking" game play it is literally fixing it from unplayable to playable which still IMO isn't even the bare minimum of what anyone would have expected on release day given it was originally slated for April 14 and that a disc manufacturing issue was the reason for the delay.

It's a bit disingenuous to be bringing up other Nacon games in an AFL23 thread, particularly when they are completely different dev studios.

The context was 'bottom of the barrel releases', nothing disingenuous about that. The Nacon mention was just a bit of trivia.

Good call - I do agree with you there. It's just the personal slingshots I don't want here. Feedback and venting on the game and the current state should be discussed - I didn't even realise there was things happening in my save until others pointed them out here. I think the mods/Ross and most of us regulars know who comes in here to stir trouble and who is just venting. We need both sides of the park and yeah, the non-celebrations are definitely not quite respected like the others. Hopefully soon the patches deliver us what we want, and the thread calms a bit and both sides of the thread get their say without judgement and too much filtering. We've all been on this journey together and deserve our opinions out there

BigAntStudios will we see changes to management mode to make it a better experience? Don't mean to sound inpatient but many of us just want simple yes/no answers for some game aspects, and I don't think it's beyond reasonable to ask.

  • will we see state league integration
  • will we get injuries and suspensions
  • will we get proper free agency, not needing to trade
  • will u18s be editable in the academy
  • will there be training and progression

This is where the frustration stems; the overwhelming majority of personal stuff has come from the positive side of the aisle. The negative people in this thread are having a go at the game. The positive people are having a go at the negative people.

Hate to dumb it down to black and white positive vs negative, that's just purely for simplification. 😅

People are way overblowing the state of gaming. It is simply insincere to suggest this game launch has been comparable to a typical modern release, unless you are specifically talking about the bottom of the barrel.
If you're talking about early access games it's comparable to those. But this is not an early access game.

You're right that it's completely disingenuous to try to assert that AFL 23's launch is the industry norm. This is a game which launched not only with promised features not functioning but which appeared to have not had any development put into them yet. It launched with fundamental mechanics of the game not working properly. These would be akin to a shooting game having bullets fire into the sky rather than where you were aiming or driving games not allowing you yo turn.

Then you had the incessant crashing and game-breaking bugs.

Certainly much to learn from both sides of the thread - and that is aimed at the positives. I just hope my input of remembering to keep up with milo uptake every few nights is getting through to everyone

I do appreciate the levity of your milo posts, as do a lot of others as far as I can tell. I'm all for there being a bit more lighthearted banter rather than the vitriol going around.

will we get injuries and suspensions

someone asked about injuries in yesterday's stream and Ross answered with this: "Injuries is a really vexed thing, definitely will play a bigger part as in future patches but there are arguments as to how much they should effect a season - they aren't really fun to get"

regards to deliberate out of bounds: "We had issues with long kicks/handballs (error) so did not want to free kick as it wasn't user error - I believe that it's fixed and we'll introduce the free"

also said if people make suggestions (on scoreboard, like adding Fox etc), he will get it to happen & will look at the interchange being in the same place as umpire calls and how umpire calls gets delayed if there is an interchange

Anyone else thinks this patch feels awful? Handball recieves and loose ball gets have gone to shit, players getting stuck in the mud every second ball recieve it is absolutely ridiculous, so much worse than the last few patches. Really really buggy handball recieves as well as still bad handball aiming feels shocking to play.

I think the average across most clubs would be 5-10 on the injury list at any given time.
Stretching from 1 week to season.
I think somewhere is that range would be more than appropriate and have a realistic feel. Even the occasional situation where you get smashed by injuries for a few weeks but could get a heaps back in the last few rounds before finals. Would be really cool.

I expect PS5 will get a double tonight.
Last night and tonight (if there’s a new one).
Wasn’t quite ready for last nights for us.
Going by memory I believe that is the case, and I'd expect another patch tonight because if memory serves me correctly, there is something about management mode and the free agency bug being fixed, BUT I could be wrong about that :)

Yeah I would be happy with that. I mean it is management mode. It’s all about managing your side… if people don’t want injuries they can turn it off

Im seriously over the negative vs positive side of this forum, with some not taking accountability for their involvement in the issue at all. Sure, COMMENT about the game - either way - but leave the personal attacks out of it. YES - im frustrated with the negative team and YES i'm grateful that BigAntStudios are doing what they do on a daily basis. but out of 3100 odd posts in this forum Im sure more than half - EITHER WAY - have not been constructive to the progress of the game. Think before you post people!

How are tactics going for everyone? Excited to give it a run when it launches in the morning. Hoping feature improvements to management mode are next on the list (besides of course more bug fixes)

Yeah, we can do without the meta-commentary on the state of the thread, thanks everyone.

As we've said consistently, praise the game, criticise the game, be neutral towards the game, we don't care and we treat both sides as equally as we can. But don't be surprised if your posts about the way others post end up gone from the thread. We have had enough of cleaning up the shitshows so are being proactive.

PS: if you see a post that should have been deleted but wasn't, while yours was, just report it and move on. No, there is no great conspiracy against you personally, we just don't see every post.

These are my key questions too.

Going by the stream last night, tactics look good for their stage 1 of release, and I'm keen myself to give it a whirl in the morning as well as whatever we may get next in a patch, but it sure has come a long way and let's just be grateful for ALL the hard work being done behind the scenes. :)

First time playing it in a while.
Still pretty frustrating but when you pull off good plays it feels and looks good.
Tackling is a massive issue for me.
The amount of times the AI can get rid of the ball so quickly or get rid of it after i've tackled them is astonishing.
I try to do the same and I get nothing.
I should be getting a lot more free kicks as well, its crazy how they never get caught HTB.

If the tackling/umpiring can be fixed, will make it a crazy amount more enjoyable.
