First time playing it in a while.
Still pretty frustrating but when you pull off good plays it feels and looks good.
Tackling is a massive issue for me.
The amount of times the AI can get rid of the ball so quickly or get rid of it after i've tackled them is astonishing.
I try to do the same and I get nothing.
I should be getting a lot more free kicks as well, its crazy how they never get caught HTB.

If the tackling/umpiring can be fixed, will make it a crazy amount more enjoyable.

I just hold down tackle until the whistle is blown or the ball up/holding the ball graphic appears. I certainly get done holding the ball a lot more than I get, but have found I'll probably get them 1-2 a quarter. Tend to cut off more of their diddly chips inside 50 than I do running them down in a tackle though

Really really buggy handball recieves as well as still bad handball aiming feels shocking to play.

i can't string together handball chains anymore, and handballing has gone backwards.

tactics are great!

it is frustrating to still be in a three steps forward two steps back holding pattern.

If the stuck in mud and teleport tackles + marking contests get fixed completely, the game is an instant 8/10 for me. Currently sits at 3.5 to a 4 due to the annoyance they provide.

i think tackling has been just about cinched.

however, the lack of frees given to the user kills me.

quite often i'll run down a player with a beautiful tackle, they'll drop the ball cold....and then a teammate will just pick the ball up and slot a goal.

not intuitive and controller-smashingly frustrating.

I’ve openly stated I am a limited gamer , WWE , NBA, F1, Cricket and Occasionally Madden and FIFA and that’s it outside of GTA the only non sport game.

WWE 2K20 is the only game I’ve ever played that’s been in a bad a shape as AFL was when I had a crack a few weeks ago on my cousins ps5. I’ve never had Madden or NBA have any of these game breaking bugs but then again I don’t play online against other people.

I don’t think people should feel grateful at all, they are paying anywhere up to $100 for a product that delivered next to nothing of what it was advertised to. It would be a mere expectation that the product they purchased is how it should be. I mean if the game had all the modes in there right now like management and pro team and there was a few issues graphically I think majority of people would overlook them and just say it is what it is- cricket is a prime example of some odd physics happening but it’s no big deal. I think the thing that grinds peoples gears here is that currently there is no depth to the game so every single negative really stands out game play wise.

This isn’t a dig at BA , previously stated big fan of the cricket games and I’m still buying on release without question.

I don’t want people to mistake my comments as saying there’s “nothing to see here” or that I find this launch in anyway acceptable. I’m just legitimately querying this objectively false narrative some seem to be pushing that this launch is a once off and rarely, if never, happens in the industry. When it’s happening at an alarming rate and has been for some time. To me that’s a completely separate discussion to holding BA accountable for this launch, which I will in my own small way by probably waiting a few weeks (or more) to buy cricket 24 instead of getting it at launch.

it changes, and it's reflective (from memory) of sir doug round etc.

also, games happen at the right times - the thurs-to-sun split.

(EDIT) This is indicative of a frustration I have with this game, there are so many niche little things done right and done so well (the ground paintings reflect sir doug/anzac round/opening round/finals, fixturing programming works, rookie/mid-season drafts, variety of tackling/kicking/marking/rucking etc animations, restricted/unrestricted free agents in the game, trading future picks, injured players can go to inactive list if needed, delisted free agents in the game, relatively complex contracting, the list goes on).

It's just such a shame that so much is still broken/needs fixing/not present.

People are way overblowing the state of gaming. It is simply insincere to suggest this game launch has been comparable to a typical modern release, unless you are specifically talking about the bottom of the barrel.

Most of those weren't on the same level as this. Like Avengers and Battlefront 2? The controversy there wasn't around the games being broken.

A lot of the others were matchmaking and online issues which is a fair comment to make, that stuff is indeed way more hit and miss.

I don't think bottom of the barrel is an unwarranted descriptor.

All of these games worked at release though. It was also known what features were in the game and what weren't when released. 3 of them even had beta tests to show this. None of them are comparable to this games launch.

Opposition did not miss a single goal and were kicking goals from the boundary 50 out while getting tackled. Holding the ball rule still seems no existent for the AI, handballing is very hit or miss. Players still not manning up but it seems like this has improved a little bit since the tactics came out. The weird glitch where the AI gets tackled and gets up like nothing happened seems to be back. The most annoying thing now seems to be the AI being able to do some sort of bicycle kick on the ground to dispose the ball while tacked, very unrealistic. Also fyi, this is not a complaining reply, but more so just pointing out some of the issues.

I listened to the latest episode of the press start podcast today and they reviewed the new Gollum game. Sounds dreadful.

Interestingly they also said that Microsoft sometimes do internal testing to provide them with some idea how the reviews are going to go. I doubt that happened with AFL23, but I thought it was interesting.

Sounds like they knew that Redfall was going to be rubbish but released it anyway

I guess that’s fair. And I’m sort of getting off the track if my own original argument anyway.
My opinion, I guess to bring it back to where I was coming from originally, is that this launch is somewhat indicative of what’s happening far too often, games being released in less than perfect shape (we can debate the varying degrees).
I mean the “redemption arc” of game devs rescuing their games (no man’s sky/cyberpunk for eg.) is almost becoming a meme.
As a gamer, I hate it.
I’ve been 100% disappointed by this launch too.
