Make It Exciting and include trading players in the draft.[Michael Gleeson] The AFL are exploring the idea of holding a brief (possibly only for 24 hours) 2nd trade window before the draft in light of the soon to be announced list size and salary cap cuts
The AFL is a joke.
I’m in two minds. This would be such a classic AFL move, try and fix their mistake by introducing something new to brush over their mistakes.
From a fan perspective it would be very interesting to see how it would pan out.
If they're out of contract they'll be able to move as DFAs, and would only be traded for a token pick anyway, so that's a non-issue. And they can still trade picks now, just not players, so the issue with number of list spots vs. number of picks they are taking into the draft is also a non-issue. The only thing would be with the salary cap coming down if clubs need to trade out big contracts. It should only be for uncontracted guys (ie fringe players who their clubs werent offering deals to until list sizes were confirmed) as they were the ones most affected by the list sizes debacle. Everyone else already had their chance to move.
The pick will be better as the bids on bid players comes in ie Ugle-Hagan will bring 62 forward 3 or 4 spots.Cool, entering the draft at 62 was far too early.
Part of me 100% Agee's with everything you have said. The other part thinks as a 1 off during these highly unprecedented times it isn't the worst idea as some teams may be left in the lurch because of the upcoming announcements.Honestly, if this goes ahead the AFL needs to be looked into.
You cannot set parameters and rules of which interested parties make large decisions based upon and operate within, then change them after the fact. There is far too much money and other things at stake for this mickey mouse sh*t.
