AFL and NFL things

The NFL is dominated by African-Americans and it certainly doesn't reduce the games appeal

i suppose superficially there is some attempt at logical thought but the tribal association for fans in NRL is greatly weakened.
For many potential Australian players it's off-putting at junior level and hence the situation gets more profound.

American football has a massive participation problem, but the nature of the game means they can attract super athletes from other sports. So can both rugbies to an extent, but neither sport has the highly specialised positions than American football does.

American football has a massive participation problem,

Declining participation due mainly to injury concerns.

but the nature of the game means they can attract super athletes from other sports.

At NFL level.

So can both rugbies to an extent,

Not really prevalent at elite level.
AFL has recruited ruck men from overseas, to replace ruck men possibly lost to basketball here.
AFL has recruited Gaelic players but that is a somewhat similar sport.

Also, the entire American football system is threaded through the college and high school systems. There is minimal of what we know as club football which has no role in development.

The main risk really is high schools no longer having teams....but the good schools that get thousands to games are never going to give that up

The problem for Rugby League is, like Australian football, it relies on the club system to do the heavy lifting. If that keeps deteriorating than that will inevitably start to suck the life out of the NRL at some point.

Also, the NFL does not have the problem of a wealthier code in the same country or a global code (that PIs have traditionally favoured) of which it is effectively a dialect.

The clock is ticking

I don't think it has massive particpation problem it's the quality of the particiants i think is the problem
Quantity isn't the problem its quality that is

I don't think it has massive particpation problem

I know it has a massive participation problem.

"From 2008-09 to 2018-19, the total number of youths aged 6 to 18 playing tackle football fell by more than 620,000, going from 2.5 million to 1.9 million; even before COVID-19 the number of youths in that age range set to play football in 2020 was below 1 million, the lowest level of participation at that level since 1998. Over that same time frame attendance at FBS football games declined by 10% per school. And even the Super Bowl, the NFL’s crown jewel – and America’s most talked about sporting event – lost more than 12.5 million viewers from 2011-2019, dropping to its lowest viewership (as proportion to U.S. population) since freaking 1976."

That is a MASSIVE problem anyway that you choose two look at it.

I've lived in the u.s american football is by far the most popular sport and there is an endless supply of athletes no matter what the figures say.

Rubbish, they get some of the world's best athletes playing it. It's the quantity of players that they struggle to get.

For the NFL it seems not be a problem with attaining players atm - there is such a comparatively large pool of potential players to choose from
but it is definitely a much debated topic from a long term perspective of essentially what is their "grassroots'".
Like in Australia or anywhere else in the western world - a decline in grassroots leads to a decline in general interest.
A decline in general interest leads to less attendance and ratings which leads to less revenue.

Unlike community footy, or league, or soccer, American football is essentially an elite stream from the start.

You try out for the school team, you don't just join. You try out, or get a scholarship for, the college team.

To play footy in Australia, you turn up and day, I want to play, and you in. You may be on the bench in the seconds, but you in.

The entire American football system is an elite stream, and everyone innit knows, if you don't make it as a pro, your pretty much done by 24.

It also can't be ignored that when they play regular season games in the UK they sell out within 24 hours
Could we ever sell out a game overseas?

Well on a per head of population basis the AFL has the highest attendances and outperforms the NFL.
attendance is a flawed statistic if used in isolation. there are too many variables, such as capacity, price, amount of matches and time of fixtures.

per head is not great either. using per head would put India low on every stat sheet and a really small country on top.

The China games were sell-outs..........

kinda....

No point comparing AFL to the NFL. like comparing a grape to a grapefruit.

Well i did state that the AFL outperforms the NFL as well the most attended sport per head of population.
thats the issue. that doesnt mean anything.

stadiums are capped. You can not get more than 100K to a game in modern times and you can only sell what your stadium holds. A lot of NFL matches are sell-outs and at a lower capacity than the MCG. For the NFL to "match" the AFL in average attended sport per population, it would have to do something which is physically impossible.

AFL would have one of the largest average capacity for its season. It should be high on average attendance and to its credit it is.

Well i did state that the AFL outperforms the NFL as well the most attended sport per head of population.

The fact that Australian football has the biggest crowds per head of population is undeniable.

Any qualification of that fact is dismissively weak as had been attested above.

that doesnt mean anything.

To say that the AFL has the highest attendances per head of population and that the AFL outperforms the NFL as well the fourth highest raw attendances in the world does mean something.

that doesnt mean anything.

Then NRL, rugby and soccer mean even less.

You can not get more than 100K to a game in modern times and you can only sell what your stadium holds.

Aren't you forgetting that the average NFL attendances aren't anywhere near capacity.

that doesnt mean anything.

Aren't you forgetting that the NFL teams draw on whole cities whilst AFL teams draw on much smaller regions.
Proportionally, AFL outperforms NFL easily.

that doesnt mean anything.

Australian Rules Football participation easily outnumbers American Football participation on a proportional basis.
That is in face of huge competition from other sports whilst NFL has little opposition.

no it doesnt. doesnt even get in the top 10. MLB smashes all in total attendance because they play 2000 games a season.
average, yes.
raw. no.
per head, means nothing at all. for example, AFL is well away from the top.
Scotland has a population of 5.5 Mil. Its top soccer league averages 16K. For the AFL to match its per head/average attendance, it would need to be nearly 60K. Gaelic Football is another, bigger example. 20K average for a population of 7mil

Thats is not even counting "one team" leagues from the Microstates. Monaco, FC Vaduz.
Then NRL, rugby and soccer mean even less.
In Australia. Yes, overseas...... Hard to qualify.

what!!!

All bar 3 teams in the 32 team league average over 90%. That is as close as you can get.

As discussed earlier, American football is not like our culture.

That is in face of huge competition from other sports whilst NFL has little opposition.
NFL has little opposition....

NBA, MLB, NHL.

MLB smashes all in total attendance

FFS. Talk about moving the goal posts we were talking AVERAGE ATENDANCES and FOOTBALL.

per head, means nothing at all.

Keep saying the to yourself and maybe you'll believe it.

As discussed earlier, American football is not like our culture.

Yes, it is single city based and the NFL is not even in every large city whereas AFL is almost suburban.

NFL has little opposition....NBA, MLB, NHL.

FFS. Different SEASONS and different CODES.
NFL like AFL goes up against soccer and smashes the "world" game.
Why don't you stick to soccer and stop the trolling ?
