AFL Cairns - 2012 Season

I ask questions about it because I care very much about it had to post! As it stands, it is a shambles and bordering on futile. If not for the QLD country team coming from it, it indeed would be futile. A rep side is an honour and a privilege! Or at least it should be! But the players in the Cairns league don't seem to give it any credit at all.

To get the best team I think all players chosen in the squad must attend a compulsory first training session where by they are given a once over by medical staff and if are fit, then must play. But to have to go to such lengths to get the best team together shows that my point is made. Why do it if it is not the best team competing?

I love the idea of a 'north v south' game! Really interesting notion that needs serious thought. But the ever wise AFL Cairns, who think that our little competition is too good to mix with the likes of Mackay & Townsville, will no doubt put the kibosh on that idea early.

Some people play football socially, it is not an honour to play representative football, they just want to play with their mates at their home club. Same arguement every year, the people who want to play and get the glory, make themself available.

The issue with Cairns is that players book holidays for the long weekend well before the squad is announced. Do they forfeit their money for that pre booked trip? Do AFL Cairns offer to pay the money the player has spent? I doubt it.

Cairns were missing a couple of players, through injury and unavailability... The same problem comes up every year, no perfect way around it.

No NEAFL players played..... would like to see a north qld V sth qld but Cairns want thier own team...
And thats just nonsensical and arrogant if true - you may as well do away with the game if they insist on this. They would be lucky to beat a PHC rep side let alone one made up of the best players (who qualify) from the NEAFL (BTW don't reckon any of these blokes should qualify - they can play rep footy for the QLD team if good enough), and the rest of the regions south of Cairns! Like Speedy said, noone played from the NEAFL this year - imagine the scoreline if they did and as Greegrimey mentioned, it's not possible to get all players available anyway. Don't have an issue with this, just that it makes more sense again to open up the numbers available for each team. As it stands there was probably 10 Cairns guys (taking a guess) who wouldn't have got a gig if the other 2 major regional towns contributed players - thats just dumb. Basically the Qld Country team is made up of blokes anyway who are 1. good enough and 2. have the ability to get off work for a period of time! Naturally it isn't going to be made up of the absolute best 25.

Then why do you care to ask questions about it? If you aren't interested in it, then you aren't interested. Find something else to whine about.

This negativity is discraceful. It was a perfect day down there, yea we lost, yea we had some players out. It was still worth playing and watching and everyone WHO ACTUALLY WENT to the game seemed to enjoy themselves. Mind you the umpiring was nothing short of rubbish.

I personally think that rep games are a good thing but agree a north v south would be a better idea
my question is - were the umpires from cairns or did they send up muppets from down this way or was it a combination?

Representative games are never going to have every single player available, from AFL down to the lowest grade. The difference being that the Stockmen would have more depth to choose from than Cairns to replace the unavailable ones. Stockmen would have had so many to choose from they would have struggled to cut people, where I'm sure Cairns were struggling for who to add.

Reading the team lists there were 11 Saints players in the side. Kicked 8 of the 11 goals, but formed most of the forward line. Walsh didn't kick any goals, was he injured, or well held?

My main concern is the lack of youth in the team. As far as I can tell there's maybe two guys under 25 in that team?

Who's Mark Nuggin?

From what I've been told, T'sville and Mackay would add some depth but not much quality.

It's now half way through the season, time to update pre-season predictions?

Walsh was well held but the delivery wasn't great for most of the day.
Anyone who doesnt think it will be Saints,Norths,Souths and Hawks. With Saints,Norths,Souths and Port in the 2's.

Walsh was well held but delivery was pretty ordinary.
Saints,Norths,Souths,Hawks in the seniors. B.Powell B&F
Saints,Norths,Souths,Port in the ressies. Anyones guess for the B&F

I couldn't agree with you more Flintstone, the guy is a Tosser of the highest quality. I believe he doesn't even reside in Cairns but points further south yet he seems to think he talks with great authority on what is happening up here and takong potshots at all and sundry that happen to disagree with his views. If he actually watched games here on a regular basis then maybe his post's on footy in Cairns might be taken seriously, until then they will be taken for what they are, the ramblings of someone who thinks he knows not what he actually knows.
I now await the vitriol and crap to start flying back at me.......

And what is it exactly that you bring to the Cairns thread??

Other than winge that is! Big Sandi, no one likes your thoughts. I haven't watched all games this season, but I've seen enough to make the earlier predictions that I've made.

  • And again

  • Not so sure - some blokes I know who were involved were very impressed with the guys from the country regions (north of sunny coast..:))

I'm not 100% sure about Hawks making 4th. I thought Port were better than Hawks the last time we played each of them. They've got a bit of catching up to do. If Hawks win this week, that will be Port done and dusted. I doubt Centrals could catch the Hawks with the severe lack of depth they've got.

If Hawks' recruits actually show up, they might sneak up into 3rd and anything can happen in finals.

Goalkicking seems done and dusted in both grades.

B&Fs will be close.
I think B Powell and Gill will take too many off each other. Tennick has missed a few games. I'm going to go with Richter, possibly Gascoyne as my dark horse if Souths continue their form into finals.

And no one gave Souths a hope in hell of making the finals this year:eek:

by the way things are panning out they will be hard pressed to miss them:)

Bill English will still take some votes and be amongst the final tally as usual

For one, I'm not constantly denigrating other posters or calling them names, your the only one that has voiced displeasure with my postings as they don't agree with your views.
The only time I've had a whinge is in response to some of your postings.
I like to think I bring a different view to the forum as do a lot of other people who post on here and having been involved in AFL for nearly 50 years I think I can bring some of that knowledge and experience in what i have to say.
As I've said before, if you don't like what I have to say then bad luck as I will continue to post as and when I see fit and offer my views.........

Is it true that Centrals coach has left?

Souths have more structure and playing the kids will benefit the club. Well done your boys Tamba and Flinstone.

Hawks won't bother spending on anymore recruits this year, the gap between them and Saints is too big to bridge.

Hope you can back this part up??????

I give Flogstone a troll because he wets his knickers really quick, where as Tamba takes it in his stride.

Ok, now pull up the posts where I 'constantly' rip into posters characters!! Show us all what you have (waiting face).

I'm not going to waste anymore of my time replying to you because no matter what anyone says, you are always right and everyone else is wrong and continuing to reply is just giving you what you want.
I will just stick to giving opinions on matters like everyone else and not worry about anything you say....

Ok any thoughts on this weeks games chappies??

When Centrals lose & if Port get done, is their season really finshed or could there be a revival for either. I'm trying to find one in the draw but it will be a hard streach of the mind to see it happening

Souths Saints Hawks

Norths enjoy the long break cause we're after ya tail in Rd 12 :p

A Port loss would put them 3 games behind, which might be too far. Centrals are falling, the Fatnownas applying for clearances back to Lions recently means they'll struggle to field a reserves for the rest of the year. Centrals are a little closer, but heading in the wrong direction. I think Port are improving, but a loss this week will make the gap too far to cover. Assuming they don't beat Saints or Norths, there's only 5-6 games left for each to catch up 3 matches.

This week I'll tip Port as the upset, Saints and Souths to win the others. Hawks will beat Port in the 2s as an upset. Saints will win theirs and Centrals will forfeit to Souths(wild guessing).

The Rep side was lucky Saints are clear on top, with the injuries they've got, and the couple of injuries they picked up in interleague, it would've been an issue if they were battling for top spot this week.

I hope you are wrong on this, as they have had one already from the Lions & if for/against comes in well it will be  dirty for them on the receiving end

I'm no longer involved at Cutters (apart from youngest son playing the season out at Cutters Juniors), Collo. In saying that, hats off to the Coach he's doing a great job.

Agree it's going to be tough for Cairns but I think they have the talent to prevail over the Stockmen. All will be out to impress in front of SJ. Won't be at the game, will be at the races then away for the weekend. So I'll have to wait and see the informative commentary on this forum.

It looks like I was wrong but it would seem that the Stockmen were way to strong. Never the less, the Stockmen did have the luxury of picking from the rest of Queensland.

Tips for this week -

Cutters to beat Centrals
Saints to give the Lions a hiding
Hawks to prevail over Port.

Can confirm that the Centrals coach Matt Cunningham has resigned as coach and also as a player......
