AFL Cairns - 2012 Season

Well done to both Manunda Hawks and Cairns Saints in making the Grand Final, in any league its a great feat to achieve this, so best of luck this weekend, hopefully its a close one.

The Manunda v Norths game on the weekend I noticed their was a clear finals footy experience difference, manunda seem to play their home ground so well, they seemed to have much bigger bodies, and where well structured, norths players looked young and seemed very inexperienced for such a big game.
I looked over the players missing in the teams from who had played in parts of the year, and noticed that their where some players that could of really helped with such an important game.

Missing players in their best 22.
Dane Eaton, Rex Liddy, Wade Dixon, Lucas Ehlich, Steven Davies, PJ Nandy, Thomas McCorkell, Brad Jorgensen, Craig Kelmar, Pedar Lawrence. All teams have missing players, but some of the experience from these players would of helped the young tigers out. Looking at the player ages in the booklet, below ive named players under the age of 21 who showed some potential/talent who played on saturday.

Josh Marriott, Jesse Batten, Rhys Bridge, Josh Coombs, Thomas Clough, Aaron Guligo, James Flynn, Jak Williams, Isaac Rokeby, Derek Bowie, Mitchell Koch,

in best 22 under 21 but didnt play on weekend. PJ Nandy, Thomas McCorkell, Pedar Lawrence.

If the Norths team can hold most of the 14 players above for next year, and have some of the missing experienced ones stick around, it seems they could really go places.

If you could confirm any of above watsons oval, as i am sure you would have better view on these guys?

Good luck to all the players tonight at the awards, my pick Brenton Powell and Matthew Walsh joint.

You cant really count Dixon. Did he even play a game. Liddy left before half way so cant count him and Ellich played the minimum 3 games so you can barely count him as a loss too. Norths are on the right track with all those young kids coming through. If they can keep them plus add some experienced players as the years go on they will be fighting for a flag real soon i think.

Pretty weak piss poor write up in the fish wrapper about last nights affair.

With the money the AFL pumps in I would expect way more than this.

Missed last night was the first time since 2003, was quite disapointed didn't get to go not enough tickets to go around at the club

Wel;l done to all the winners, I heard Bill English still got in the top 5 so much for some writing him OFF AGAIN as I have said through out the years he is a WORKHORSE and always polls well

I'm Tamba and thats MY VIEW :hearts:

Think the saints will be way to strong this weekend, hopefully next year there is a few teams that can take it up to them! On the roumor mill, hear city lions are looking at a breakout year next season, with holding on to most of the playing group from this season plus a few big signings, a few boys from the neafl down south, another name keeps popping up is Justin white played a few seasons a couple of years back, and a couple of lads from the peninsular in Vic more to come in a few weeks

Again Quagmire of crap...you are wrong! But feel free to complain and report if we hurt your feelings!!

Watson's...I'm sorry but Norths have not improved. If Port & Centrals were as string as last season, your would not have made the four. At very best, you maybe may have scraped in for fourth at cost of Centrals but I still doubt it.

We all know the wind every September at Cazalys is a factor and both teams need to play it. Again, in MY opinion, Norths players appeared to conced defeat too early on two occasions.

As for the choice of the two, I'd choose the team that is reigning premier every time. As for your building to something, next year will tell us if that is true. However this year is a fair indication that you haven't. Out in straight sets to the only two team that haven't dropped off considerably is the proof.

Not sure logic or arithmetic are your strong points. If Port were as strong as last season, they would have knocked Hawks out in the first final. Norths did finish above Hawks, remember.

Not to sure who Justin white played for, but supposably kicked 50 goals in 8 games heard he can play, think it is nearly a done deal. The boys from the peninsular were both rep players stocky hard nuts midfielders, and have to hear mote on the neafl players

Didn't Dontargue also say Powell was just a plodder? Good judge of football ability and performance, aren't you!

Well done Powelly.

Oh saint you saints supporters are trying so hard but just can't seem to piece it together! Never said Powell wasn't a good player, cant recall but may have said a plodder because that's what he is, a good one but a plodder nonetheless. Gill was far and away saints best player this year and had he played all games would gave won well. So back to teaching the kiddies their ABC's Saint my boy!

If Port were as strong as last year they would have finished second easily. Then Norths & Hawks (who have dropped off also) would have played in the elimination first week and I think hawks would have got them as they did on the weekend.

I am far from convinced that Norths have improved that much at all, and have had support in this belief from someone at just about every club this year saying the league has taken a dreadful drop in standard.

Hi just a quick question, How much would your best 10 players be on a game up there?
Or is it more a work opportunity League.?

You'll have to ask the guys at Cairns Saints that one mate. But tread very carefully as its a sensitive subject among their very sensitive supporter group!!

Your logic bewilders me Dontargue, if,if if, all you can do is beat whats out there and as we won a lot more games than previous years I would say we have improved. Whether the standard of the league has improved is irrellevant, at the end of the day ladder position/finals is what is remembered.

If you're happy with false sense of rapid improvement then this is your call. But when the league hits an upswing as it sounds like it may next season, and you go backwards by remaining the same, then don't say you weren't warned. A good club under an honest coach will look further than just ladder position for signs of improvement, rather by objectively analysing the group and its development based on KPI's throughout the season, and the standard of the competiton, all in comparison to the previous season.

You are thinking I am just trying to downplay Norths when in fact it makes no difference to me who it is that's the measuring stick. I think North Cairns have remained as close to the standard they were at last season and this gives us information on where the league is at. It's completely objective and an obvious observation and I'm dumbfounded some of you so called self anointed experts cannot (or refuse to) see it.

Are you jealous of Norths all you have done is take shots at them! you are like a child in the school yard punching the girl you like, but keep up the post your insight into the game is is is entertaining

Righto, once again, for the mentally inept, I have nothing against Norths, i am merely stating an observation which i have spoken of to many among the league who agree. It's not an indictment on North Cairns, it just so happens that they are the club which are the barometer for the league at present.
As for being jealous, how do you come to such a conclusion when our club is the reigning premier in both grades and into another grand final this season, our fourth in seven seasons.?
When are some of you going to pull your head out of the sand and accept constructive observation and opinion that will only HELP your clubs development going forward. If you can see the signs and acknowledge them objectively, then you can put in place practises to improve based on these observations. Or, you can sit back and just play it by ear and see what happens for another decade and get nowhere.
Saints have been the best at reading the league and exploiting opportunity based on this ability, followed by Hawks in recent times who have seen that it works. You have to go back as far as 2005 to find a premiership club that's not Saints or Hawks. Norths haven't won since 1988. So all I'm saying is don't be complacent and rely on perceived improvement to take a natural growth next season because going by the standard across the board, the improvement has been negligible. To get to a grand final in the next year or two, there is more to be done that may be thought within the club, going by what I'm reading here.
As for my insight uwhitemaggot, your name suggests a racially bigoted connotation to which I vehemently disapprove and anyone with such poor taste would undoubtedly struggle with the concept of foresight and development. But you keep posting you racist nobody without a club.

Hi just a quick question, How much would your best 10 players be on a game up there?

It depends on what team you go to. Some only pay coaches, plus incentives, others pay for flights or accom(I'm guessing this is how clubs get guys across from NT). Some players get paid per game.

If you exclude coaches, the top players at most teams would (I'm guessing) be on a couple of hundred a game max, mostly supplemented by the club getting the players work and making sure they're accommodated (though the player would still pay for it.)

I'm sure there are players like Hocking/Smith from Port last year or Powell at Hawks who are on bigger money, but nobody would be anywhere near 4 figures a week (or if they are, they're an anomaly?). I'm sure Withers isn't playing for any less than $300 a game.

Gill, Powell and Lewis are probably the only players that would be worth 4 figures in country Vic and they're all on a lot less in Cairns (I think they might all be asst coaches, too).

If you were coming from Vic (especially country Vic), I'd be expecting a pay cut per game to play in Cairns, but you might end up with a better paying job and almost certainly a much better lifestyle.

WTF does that mean? does it mean putting the best team on the park?

Anybody who has seen Norths play this year can vouch for their improvement in winning the contested ball and moving the football. Their defence has improved with the addition of Mueller and their youngsters are all clearly better this year than they were last year. They've still got work to do, but saying the only reason they finished where they did is because everybody else dropped away is ridiculous and nobody with any football sense would agree with that.

So Powell's still a plodder because he might only finish second in the vote count behind an ex-AFL player? You're stupidity is hanging out.

Some clubs like Saints, Hawks for a start, pay incentive payments , who receives them are up to the players voting from what I'm told.

Others pay players a remittance of what they deem.

I know at Souths we are looking at going down the path of incentives as well other wise we pay very little.

If you are serious about your footy come up look around chat with the teams
then decide to bring some mates and have fun, sun and fishing in a great league although down slightly this year

Hahaha you can always rely on the Saints folk to be up in arms over anything, even if it's nothing to do wit their club. The arrogance of this club knows no bounds as they take the role as keeper of the competiton.

For you Saint, who as a tescher should know better - Reading the league and exploiting an opportunity means knowing by observation where the league is headed and recruiting accordingly to be sure of being a premiership contender.

I'm tired of explaining to the kids on here but those who get it have said as much in private messages. A few names that I noticed haven't even posted yet but their join dates are quite old so it seems we have quite an audience watching kids.

Powell wouldn't be worth $1,000 per game in victoria or anywhere else in Australia. Again with over inflated egos!

And Quagmire, keep trying chubby boy. :)

Just to make it clear for you Sainst as I know you're a tad slow, league medals are often won by plodders who keep bobbing up. Nothing against plodders, every club needs a one, but you wouldn't want two. As respected as he is, and rightly so, he's still just a plodding midfielder, and they're a dime a dozen. Maybe if he were a big marking CHF, then you're looking at $1000+ a game, a bit like Nick Gill or Jason eagle....

Oh Richard :hearts: as a president of a club I'm sure you would be far more qualified to talk about football payments, than us, for we are just self annionted experts. :hearts:

Ps......
People of norths you should listen to Richard or your club is doomed!! You clearly haven't improve because you only finished second on the ladder! Try again next year!? His visions are clear and godly and I a mere football minion, can only hope to have the insight of such a football scholar. I will follow Richard, teach me the new way and lead me to the promised land! Xoxo :hearts:

You said it not me Quagmire. The club hasn't won a flag in 25 years.

I take insult at being called a teacher. I'm sure if you go through my old posts, you'll find the words "those who can do, do. Those who can't teach".

How do you recruit based on 'where the league is headed'? You recruit the best players you can, who cares 'where the league is headed'. That's how you contend for the premiership.

And I meant Powell from Hawks, who I mentioned earlier in that post. Good Ruckmen get overs everywhere they go.

And Quagmire definitely isn't chubby, so you got that wrong too.

We're so sorry for sticking up for Norths in the face of your irrational rants. I didn't realise your opinions were facts.
