I think Carmichael is more outside than people assume. I watched the state game and he played a lot of wing and was quite uncontested. His kicking was great though and he hit the scoreboard.

This is reflected in his SANFL stats, his clearance numbers are good but not great. He has fewer clearances than 19 year old Oliver Davis.

He will fit in as a good, tough wing and would likely add to our best 22.
Definitely has an outside game, however from what I've seen, and people I've spoken to who follow West Adelaide say his best position is on the inside. Tough and hard. Averaging almost 5 clearances a game this year. Would start in most centre bounces. The fact his ball use is on point adds to his versatility imo. No brainer pick for us I reckon.

That’s a sensible answer. Is height the decisive factor or can a broad shouldered 6ft’r do the job?
Another overlooked fact is that taller mids can take contested marks or at least bring the ball to ground which can force a stoppage. Arguably the biggest problem is defending transition from F50 to D50. One contributor is the lack of defensive running. Another reason is the inability for the mids to compete in the air. Parish, Caldwell, Hobbs, Shiel, Merrett and McGrath are basically non-factors in the air. That's too many mids. They either can't compete, which allows the opposition to take a mark, or they do compete which puts them at risk of giving away a free kick, which is basically like conceding a mark. Langford is SO important to the side for that very reason. The side needs another couple of 188cm+ mids that are able to defend the air.

The side needs to be built so that all parts of the ground can defend in every way. At the moment, this side is relying on the midfield to win every centre clearance and every stoppage, which is unrealistic. It's basically built to move the ball forward rather than defending.

How close did the mid-season draft (expert) predictions get last year. Quite a few surprises if I remember... I'll do some digging.

Herald sun has a mid season 2022 mock draft if someone could post it?
edit: I'll tag in the final order.

Gaff was impressed in his outing for WCE. Said Florenca got 9 possessions when the heat was on in the 1st qtr against a strong Brisbane midfield. Said that effort will be over 4 quarters once he gets the chance to train in a professional environment. A good South Coogee boy as well.

What, a w***er?

2021 The Roar (I know, it's all I could find) predicted / Actual pick in that spot

Pick 1 - North Melbourne -Jackson Callow / Jacob Edwards
Pick 2 - Hawthorn - Ned Moyle / Jai Newcombe
Pick 3 - Collingwood - Jacob Edwards / Ash Johnson
Pick 4 - Adelaide Crows - Wylie Buzza / Patrick Parnell
Pick 5 - Gold Coast Suns - Luke Cleary / Ned Moyle
Pick 6 - Carlton - Oliver Davis / Alex Mirkov
Pick 7 - St Kilda - Zavier Maher /Max Heath

The answer is that the Roar didn't get very close last year. Not sure about the Herald Sun. Mock drafts of the mid-season seem quite hit and miss.
Callow (17), Moyle (5), Edwards (1), Buzza, Cleary, Davis, Maher (not taken)

Cal Twomey talk about us at about 9 minutes.

Links us to D'Ambrossio, Hugo Hall-Khan, Josh Carmichael, Wade Dreksen and Max Ramsden. Suggests still to be decided as we've been interviewing over the last few days.

Herald sun phantom draft has us going Carmichael and Menzies.
I’d be happy with anyone of Carmichael, d'ambrosio, Florenca, Derksen and with the other pick (if we have it?) one of the smalls. Kantilla or Menzies

I wouldn’t be against Hall-Kahan and or even Ballanden with our last pick

I think the essence of this is totally correct in that the balance is off but I do think its a bit harsh to throw a blanket over all those guys.
For mine Shiel and Merrett are by far the worst in the air. Merrett you can cop with everything else he brings to the table - Shiel it would be better if we found another position for. McGrath I'd argue is decent defensively in the air and generally manages to spoil without giving away a free. Hobbs seems reasonable in the air so far given he's been able to take marks up forward but real early to make a judgement. Parish below average and Caldwell about average. Also prior to this year Snelling was in there as well and he's no better in the air than Shiel or Merrett but he seems destined for small forward duties for the foreseeable future.

The counter point to all this is Langford, Stringer (both been injured this year) plus Durham, Martin, Perkins and Cox. Langford and Stringer are proven quantities but unfortunately have been missing thus far. Durham seems good in the air. Martin and Perkins have the height but aren't yet consistent forces in the air and Perkins is only just starting to move into the midfield. Cox will probably end up KP anyway but worth mentioning - he's actually kind of a poor mark right now but he is 200cm playing on blokes much smaller than him so if stays on the wing/midfield he'll eventually start taking marks.

So I think our balance is off but I don't think its far off as it seems. As Durham, Martin and Perkins gain experience we won't look so bad in this area. Plus Langford and Stringer being injured made it all much worse. Probably still need to swap out at least one smaller mid for a taller one though.

Sure the wings are generally covered at full strength, but I still don't think the balance is ideal. I know some of the mids I mentioned are better at defending than others, but my general point is with tall opposition midfields in mind. Part of the reason this side struggles against Bulldogs is because the above mids are going against Bont (190+), Macrae (190+) and Dunkley (190+). If they win the centre clearance and don't kick a goal, the midfield is toast going the other way because Bulldogs have the size advantage. It creates too many mismatches to cover. If clubs don't build defences or forwardlines to give away that much height, then why allow the opposition height advantage to that magnitude around the ground? It's why this side is easy to play against. Even if every mid picks up a man when defending, there's still a weakness opposition players can exploit. Hence why this side is currently built to attack and not defend.

I'll believe that when he's available at our pick.

Which will probably be used to bring back Ariel Steinberg.
