The midfielder depth looks stronger this year than next year. However, the tall depth looks stronger this year than the next.

If we want to add talls it would be a good idea to do it this year because our options might be more limited next year.

Its really always a combination of best available x need isnt it?

Especially for anything inside 30 odd picks

Even if you have a tall available at your 3rd round that you rated as the 3rd best in the draft and youve already got 1 and 2 in say your first 10 picks and this 3rd guy is available at 50 then it wouldnt be out of the realm to go again and back yourself in

Really depends whos available at the given pick

there's always mids as well.
you really need to time your draft for talls it would seem.

I dunno the best footy Melbourne played this year was with petty in the forward line, they fell apart pretty quickly when he went out
I agree. Look best when petty is forward.
nate caddy is a different type of forward.
at his best he should be able to play high.

Charlie Edwards a genuine midfielder?

Im all in on his highlights

But id also do 9 for Dees 14 and 25

I think North will absolutely take A.Reid at 15 if still available. Maybe they wont they still have Larkey, CCJ, Comben and Zurhaar
I think edwards and Leake are the two sleepers who could climb in place of Watson and caddy.
edwards highlight package as good as most and neatly had him at essendons pick in my mock.
he has some flaws- he doesnt work particularly hard from contest to contest and he is not physical enough at the contest at present.
he could be a really good afl midfielder if he can fix those flaws

Sounds like those flaws would perfectly complement those of the rest of our list

Agree on Edwards . Has built into the season but as you say he is not exactly a physical beast that breaks through the contest.

I think this is a good call. Gives clubs drafting interstate in articular more leverage to work on keeping highly rated players
The money side interests me, good players taken after 20 will be getting paid a lot more than good players taken in the top 20, in their 3rd years?

Say Nate Caddy has an enormous start to his career and by the end of year 2 he's getting 600k offers, but the club who drafted him don't want to pay him 600k as he's contracted already for 150k (whatever 1st contract is), is this going to create some issues?

Maybe but think its where some protection of the clubs is good too, if they put the development etc into them it doesn't stop them extending at the club that drafted them if happy for a higher price early if both are happy but otherwise clubs are probably sniffing around the end of the first season, maybe while not totally settled

The theory is good, just curious in practice. It's happening, we will find out.

They're regulating 3rd year payments as well.

I think 3rd is is negotiable on performance based
