Do we have enough already? We have about 8 free list spots to fill.

Last season when we had injuries Jake Kelly and Nick Hind were playing a bunch of wing/HF and they along with Stringer aren’t on the team anymore.

The great thing about adding a bunch of guys in the 30s is that they go straight into the VFL to develop. They shouldn’t be stopping players with 3+ years in the system from getting opportunities. If they leapfrog people that says more about the guys on the list.

Assuming we plan on taking 2-3 guys + Kako in the draft what positions would you like to fill?
Half back x 2, Wing x 2 , small defender, 3rd tall back, another small forward would all be ahead of Half fowars flanks for me.

Would take Travaglia, Lindsay, Tauru, Oliver, Kako and Berry if i had a bunch of first round picks

Fair enough.

I find it quite amusing how we’ve essentially identified the same list needs but like completely different players

For instance I’d say that Halfback/small defender is 1 position and Halfback/3rd tall is another same position. Wing + SF = HHF for me which is why I like the idea of going 2 for 1 same as a balanced mid that can play inside/outside aka Mccluggage

I just dont think we need to draft coverage yet at half forward for the Langford/Jones/ Perkins type which you'd mentioned.

I like the suggestion of two wingers. An attacking winger who ideally could start at half fwd and the other who could start at half back

I just think versatile midsize players are the way to fill list gaps and most of the best players there play HHF because that’s more fun then just playing wing and can easily play wing/HB if needed
So we both want wing and halfback. You just want your players to be versatile. Versatility is nice, but its a slippery slope as you can end up with a list of unknowns and wasted development years. Pick players and develop them in their positions. If they can genuinely play half back or wing (positions on the list we both agree needs to be filled) and play forward, great. But im not picking half forward flanks (Perkins, Langford, Jones types) hoping they can play wing or half back as well.

Well I also want pressure forwards and balanced mid.

but when I’m picturing those players I’m thinking more of your Martin/Dursma types just big tanks good users and hopefully know how to find the sticks.

I think when picking in the 30s your less likely to get elite guys so may as well just find a few players who are good enough at everything to be best 23 at some point.

HB is by far the easiest position on the field to play and I feel any AFL standard player can be decent there.

I think Merrett and Durham are versatile. Caldwell has been good at half forward before. What positions are you targetting this draft?
Durham I don't see as versatile. He's mid only tbh. Parish, Hobbs, Shiel, Tsatas and Setterfield are all mid only.

I don't really rate his forward craft and his kicking isn't damaging enough for half back IMO. He can play different roles in the middle (inside, wing, run with) but yeah.

No jack of all trades types that might be able to play anywhere for me. Pick guys for specific roles.

What onfield positions are you targeting this draft?
I think we need a few things. I'd like a medium intercept player, probably a Moore or Miers type half forward with high SI and high GA metrics and a key forward

Setterfield has played just about every position

Hobbs has been forward a fair bit

Durham use to be a half back and has played wing alot. Also has been playing half forward at stages the last 12 months

It really depends what way we want to go with the mids. Some top clubs keep to a solid 4, whilst others push to the 6 mark with mids rotating heavily

See in the past what Essendon has gotten wrong is that they act like versatile players are saviours and have hand no real development plan.

These balanced versatile players have whatever position they played as juniors. That’s the starting point.

Who are you talking about from this draft? Say you had a few 1st rounders

Kako as a SF.

Any 3 other players
Josh Smilie - big powerful inside mid, fast and a good kick
Harvey Langford - Big Mid great kick and decent in front of goals can really play anywhere.
Bo Allen/Taru - can play 3rd tall intercept defender and mid. Huge range on his kick.

Would be targeting the pick 30+ version of all those players.
