“Far too safe…”

Give it a rest, he’s taken a good deal which unless Melbourne shoot the lights out next year substantially improved our draft hand. We don’t need a dododo style trade and draft period trying to be too clever and getting burnt.

Holding out for a better deal had minimal additional upside and huge downside. Maybe a better deal would have emerged if we waited but it could have just as easily resulted in burning our first round pick on an early bid for Kako which would have been a disaster

We saw a better deal for a worse pick, I’m also talking about his trade period.

Showed no direction.

We didn’t trade for any player who would lift our potential ceiling.

Or

We didn’t trade/ delist senior players to create room for younger guys to play. Instead preferring to keep guys who are near our best 22 but don’t have much future with us.

I’m way too sick of being mediocre

I just hope Rosa can hit on these draft picks. He was far too safe during the trade and now draft periods.

So far I hope to be wrong on him but so far I’m underwhelmed.

Probably still will be. Don’t think that’s a bad thing.

It’s easier to have an appetite for risk when the list is in a healthy position. It’s far from that right now.

I get your sick of mediocrity but what you’re proposing isn’t a path forward anywhere good it’s a path to being an expansion club without consessions

Seems like a lot to offer
Kinda mixed about whether it's a lot or not. If you take Rosa's "two draft net result" view then I think it's pretty much pick 9 from this year and our F2 for Shanahan (if that's who they're wanting to move up the order for), Melbourne's future first, some extra picks late this year and points so we didn't go into deficit for the Kako bid. Not bad overall.

But if you were paying attention you’d have noticed the better trade only came later in the draft after a bid for Kako, we wouldn’t have had anything we could have offered Norf for that pick. When Melbourne put forward their offer during the trade period there’s no way to see into the future and knock it back on the grounds that norf were going to offload their F1 in a few months time.

I also wouldn’t pencil norfs F1 in as a top 5 pick either, they’re stacked with talent and I wouldn’t be surprised if they only just miss the 8 next year.

Success doesn’t come by turning a huge dial from SAFE to RISKY. It comes from making smart choices over a number of years and letting the little wins accumulate

I respectfully disagree. As faible said below

So we've gone from 1 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, no 3rd, no 4th to:

13 (Kako), 2 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd and an extra F1 whilst still keeping our F1 and F2 intact.

Seems like good business to me. Improved our hand this year and next year simultaneously.

Improving our draft hand should not be considered 'too safe.'

Yeah, I guess like norf if there’s someone we’re convinced will be a player still available it’s worth having a go.

The 30s might also be where we see the talent starting to fall away into more speculative picks

I do like the idea of Shanahan as the long term partner to Caddy. He played well in his VFL stint with us. But i think id prefer 3 of Clarke, Alger, Davidson and some of the others in the range and keep our F2. Wouldn't be horrified if we do the Shanahan (if that's who we are targeting at 29) deal though.

i was busy marking shit last night (Still have 3 classes to go whoops) but how's our draft haul looking? i recall reading sometime this season that archie roberts had ended up drifting down a fair way, though i could be misremembering.

is there anyone of his calibre who may end up sliding? i know there's some interest in shanahan, but who else would potentially be on the cards?

Sims & Whitlock i think theres some more smalls as well there was a HBF from SA that models his game on Redman and is a classy ball user

The depth has always been the reported strength of this draft and it looks true. There are some juicy targets in the next 20 picks and we currently have 3 in the range.

I don’t know if maybe he’s a bit one dimensional to be a jet at AFL level. Clearly quite good at what he does do though.

I’m not sure Caddy + Shanahan isn’t another Langford/Stringer combo

With both guys undersized for true KPP in 2025 and beyond.

He’s a good player no doubt but depending on the cost and who’s available I’d find it hard to pay up for him.

Edit: if we’re going hard at Richmond’s pick i wonder if it’s Hamish Davis related. We were said to like him pre draft.

190cm run all day HF who can kick a bag. Have to get in front of WC to have a chance.

Looking at the deal again i hope we dont do it. Can get 3 solid players tonight in the next 15 picks and hold onto the F2

Mate you can’t say the bid for kako came after our pick, because it’s a totally different scenario if essendon still have that live pick on draft night. It totally changes everything and opposition clubs mindsets. We have no traded for less than what north got. They got pick 27 and likely a pick that will be 25+ next year
It was no secret we were always going to match but then scared clubs off by bidding earlier was trading out our early pick.

Id be more worried about a premature bid if we retained our first selection. The fact we moved it out enhanced the chances of what happened (a bid came after our first)

We don’t need more KPP players. This draft shows that what is most important is having a fleet of hard running skillful medium/smalls. Look at what GWS have done, litterally year after year picking the eyes out of the best smalls who can play up the ground.

The talls are sliding for a reason, you only need a handful on the list at a time, but having depth with dynamic smalls is by far more important.

Everyone’s a bargain at a certain price, and maybe we are getting into that territory with Shanahan, but man do we need more run across the board at our football club.
Peter Wright is in his 7th year of AFL football. Draper is a number 1 ruck. Nick Bryan is a number 1 ruck. Nate Caddy seems more running fwd than say at home kick I on my head forward

Id say we definitely need at least one KPF this draft
