Recruiting AFL Draft Watch 2024 - What do we do, we don't have a top 10 pick?

That is why I like to have 3 or 4 players on my list. Not very often we land exactly the guy I want.

Essendon have the same issue as last year we’re they might be 1 pick too low for the pool of players they should be accessing.

Ie my top 5 Wishlist is Langford Lalor Smillie, Allen. Just a balanced midsized or bigger mid with decent usage.

Problem is every team wants those players so you have to pick and choose. Essendon also don’t really have the assets to trade up. So they sort of have to accept whoever falls.

I’d say my backups if none of that group are available would be that Ruck from Sturt or best availiable Pressure forward (Berry)

Unless Smillie runs something ridiculous at the combine, he’s going to slide. Too slow, gets caught and in the afl you can’t just ragdoll people.

The draft combine will be pretty important this year:

Ashcroft - is he quick enough?
Murphy Reid - is he a gulden type runner or a parish?
FOS - is his athletic profile point of difference?
Travaglia - if he blitz’s it how far could he move up?
Jagger Smith - what’s his athletic point of difference for a smaller mid
Smillie - he’s slow, but does he have a big tank - some other point of difference
Langford - same thing as Smillie
Sid Draper - is he Chad Warner level explosive?
Lindsay - similar to Travaglia, if he does well athletically I reckon he could really shoot up the board (ie nails the 2km)

Fascinating year!
Few draft boards have Lindsay in the top 10 already. Elite kick and vision that can slot straight into multiple positions. Id hope we take him if available

I’m pretty sure Souup has the pre-season results for some of those players if you ask nicely.

Personally I’d be pretty suprised if we don’t select Bo Allen at pick 10

basically a perfect fit in terms of need and expected to go around there or a bit later.

Bo is a 190cm defensive mid/3rd tall intercept defender with a booming (and accurate) left foot) and a physical play style.

Bonus points for being state captain for WA and looks physically ready for AFL.

Main negative from my limited view of his highlights is can be prone to a bad decision when taking the game on. But I’d back out coaches to tidy that up.
Sounds a loot lik eDavid Myers!

His foot is anything but accurate

Where's Kakos?

I reckon this phantom draft is a better read than Cals. It provides detail on the draftees limitations.
Bumping this post for convenience.

Is Lalor a competitive beast or just a man child eDPS ydc55 ? More I think about it, more I like the idea of Tahru or Travaglia.

Langford will be my #1, the most perfect kid we could have in recent drafts sans the top echelon types.
I like Lalor.
He has footy smarts and is also dangerous forward.
You could argue he played this year without ever being fully fit which means there is athletic upside..
I rate Ali’s Tauru over most.
I went to the grand final yesterday and it solidified my thinking that you do not need gorilla key forwards anymore but you must have forwards who are athletic and can run and jump at footy.

Like we’ve fixed Parish, Laverne, McGrath, Tsatsis and others.

different issues

McGrath it’s a space/processing issue and then he defaults to skyscraper kicks when he’s lost.

Parish is good at processing but has the odd bad miss on easy kicks which you notice more due to possession volume

Tsatas- issues with technical action and how it scaled over distance/at full speed

Laverde - game processing issue. Kicking technique isn’t all that bad.

Allen- long low kick with big distance. Something none of the players above on the list have. Technically pretty good. Defaults long to space or long to 1vs 1 target when caught. Occasionally over kicks at speed especially when rushed.

Different flaws then the others and the extra range softens the blow somewhat
