Had Boak lightly penciled in weeks ago, but then he will be fighting against the likes of Cornes, Burgoyne, Pearce, Rodan etc. so I went the weak team options, Ess/Carlton/Melbourne

Fair enough. Stevens is a must get and you wouldn't pick anyone else.

I'm think about Boak. Similar to Pendelbury of last year for me. 2nd year but in a far better midfield.

Does he have any other string to his bow... could he drift forward instead of going to the bench? Maybe Gibbs is closer.
I'm slowly making my point... bear with me.... (stupid beer).

At least 75% of teams will have Stevens, but it is what you do with him that make your side unique. You could trade him (up or down) when he hits 340k. Some would keep him until the end, some would hold out for a better price, and some of those might hold out too long.

How you manage your team and your ability to make it better is what makes it unique, rather than the players in it.

Unique for the sake of unique is silly IMO. A good unique player will be very popular very soon. Matt Priddis anyone?

It's all about GUNS. Everybody has them, but the number of them varies. The also-rans are extremely important because rookie + also-ran = gun but don't try to pick different players for the sake of it. Pick the best players and don't worry if they are unique or not. If Jimmy Bartel got injured, he would be unique pretty quickly; think he's still worth getting?

One reason you would choose someone unique is because the upside is not that obvious. This is because there is more risk involved.

EG -

Stevens / Simmonds are obvious because of their well documented history.

A player like Chaplin is a unique pick with potential upside off his back end last year but has risks being that he is injured and borderline for Rd1 and he is a key position player and may be more accountable. Great if it comes off but the risk is higher.

Good point. If you had Priddis last year the way you traded or held him made 200K difference to your team

My biggest challenge is WHICH kids.

I have found reasons for picking them all and reasons not to.

Selwood: Will he get early games or not? How many games will he get in before he makes his schooling no 1 priority. Possibly worth the risk having him as no 2 bench, knows how to find the ball.
Proud: Will he get enough early games, has he done enough yet? Wavering on this one, I don't know.
Hansen: I don't want another Riggio, will have no idea on thursday if he is named. High risk.
Palmer: Should get enough early games,
Bird: Will he or won't he, don't think he will start Rd 1.
Kreuzer: Definate yes even if misses rd 1.
Rioli: Definate yes, on field or off, on look who they are playing.
Tippett: worth a chance, can't see too much game time with Burton/Porps, might be a early cash in.
Valentti: Please Melbourne get a lti.

Selwood: He will play, maybe not rd 1, but will be good value.
Proud: Mathews likes a guy who proves himself and from what I have seen, Mathews likes him, he will get a chance
Hansen: Good player, bad dt'er
Palmer: This guy is a gun!
Bird: Sydney dont hand out number 14 to a nobody
Kreuzer: Definate yes even if misses rd 1.
Rioli: Definate yes, on field or off, on look who they are playing.
Tippett: Might not get the game time we all think, Seller and him might be rotated
Valentti: Please Melbourne get a lti.

This is just my opinion

I'm with you now.

So it's the way you add value to your team that makes it unique.

Thanks for that.

Yeah then theres:

Pfeiffer
Sellar
Gamble: Will know if he starts Rd 1 at least, might be worth throwing in last minute.
Morton
Cotchin: absolute champ in the making, but when he starts is anyones guess at the moment.
Armitage: Seems everyonehas gone cold after 1 game :)
Allen: or armitage, they both wont start rd 1.

Which Morton? The highly rated melbourne 1 or the underrated Hawks 1?

Proud: Will play the first few rounds (form warants it), it's really up to him whether he plays more.
Bird: Reading the Sydney board, is pretty much guaranteed a start for round one (they aren't Roos though). If he performs, could make some cash like Selwood did last year (big call i know)
Palmer: Pretty much the same as Proud, will get a go round one but up to him whether he plays more games.
Rioli: Should start round one and play a good majority of the year if form warants it
Geary: Big chance to start a few early games but not much more, seems a little raw
Tippett: Seems to have first crack at the crows FF position, much more risky as KF take time to develop
H.Taylor: Apparently looking good to start until Egan gets back, not sure if that is still happening but if so should play the first half dozen rounds.
Gamble: Can't see why he won't play round one
J.Edwards: Will get a crack at a FP spot for the first few rounds
Hartlett: Should start at CHF until Fisher comes back (round 2-3 i think), then i think it is him against Edwards for that third marking forward.
S.Thompson: Not sure to much about him but seems to have had a fairly good pre-season and reading the roos board, seems to be in-line for a start round one
Hansen:Even though he's apparently playing on the wing, i still think he is a year, a little risky
Pfeiffer: Will get first crack at round one
Sellar: Compete will Tippett for FF spot, looked promising though
Armitage: Sounds like he will get quite a few games, second year and will play first round

All of this is my opinion, take what you want from it but it is the way i see it.
