I find it amazing how big ant make a good foundation game and everyone kissed the ground they walked on but WW make a better foundation game and people criticise the crap out of them, if you look at big ants games over the last 6 years you'll see that their games are still extremely basic and haven't evolved much from the foundation at all

Funny how the people being most critical of the game are the ones who were against it from day 1 (almost like they went in with closed minds)

Credit to WW for creating the best AFL game ever made by a fair way, is it perfect ? No but with a patch it'll be a great game that'll easily last the year or two until Evolution 2 comes out to bring further depth to the already established gameplay and modes

This game isn't better than Live 1, though.
This is also WW's second attempt at an AFL game for consoles/PC, and they've been making some form of AFL game for over a decade. AFL Live was BA's first ever attempt.
AFL Live is also 6 years old and was released on last-gen hardware. The fact that a benchmark is a game released six years ago by a first-time AFL developer, and it still can't be touched, is sad really.

And for those suggesting that the terrible marking system is good because it's challenging, and games aren't meant to be easy - it's true that games should provide some challenge, but not in the controls fundamental to playing the game. These should be something you should be able to master in a few hours of gameplay. The challenge should come from the opposition the game presents you. You should feel like you're being challenged by what the opponent in the game is doing, not having a grapplefest with clunky controls constantly.

If the game relies on difficult controls and bugged-out AI to make it difficult, then it's not a very well-designed game.

When I returned my copy to EB games the girl there said she's had quite a few copies come back already.

I said don't worry there will be much much more after the weekend.

Live 2 was returned a lot too.

I wonder what EB must think about all this. Every couple of years they get word of an AFL game coming through, which causes a bunch of blokes rushing to the store to pressure them to break street date, and then a few days later, a bunch of them return to tell them that the game is shit and they want their money back.

Agreed with those who are saying the game gets much better once you figure out how to mark. Feel a lot more confident of grabbing them consistently which just improves my overall experience with the game, it's not a lottery anymore.

Also had a great moment with Grundy tapping the ball into the left pocket From the boundary to Treloar who snaps on his left for a goal. That felt so good and I feel like you couldn't really do that in Live 1.

Thanks for your input, BF gamers. Thanks for putting in the big early bucks and keeping the developers afloat, so at least they'll get the funding to have another crack at this, definitely a worthwhile project and a holy grail for us footy fans, but I think I'll do my usual cheapskate routine and wait until this time next year to get this as a pre-owned heavily discounted game (got COD Black Ops a few months ago for $12 - a bargain guys, it's all in the timing!). I'm now looking seriously at Horizon Zero Dawn as the game I'll spend $80 in birthday EB vouchers on...

This is as current as I get. I spend most of the week living in the seventies...

Have you played he game ? (Last I heard you hadn't)

When I say it's good it's always "my opinion" but when someone says it's bad that's considered fact ?

The marking has a steep learning curve but works very well once you learn how, it feels right but also manages to be challenging which Live 1 never managed to do, this system takes into account positioning, body use and timing as well as attributes and that's why it's so complex but also why it feels so real when in play

Evolution is a patch away from being a great game and most people who are saying it's shit or are returning it seem too impatient to learn how to play

couple thoughts...
AI is really difficult, I'm almost ashamed to say I haven't won a game on normal difficulty yet, I think holding/throwing the ball needs to be nerfed a bit, because the ball basically never spills out from your possessions, and I've literally never had no prior called when I've been tackled.

Sad to see that you can still take custom-made machine teams online, the couple of games I've played have been against people using teams that include fyfe, dangerfield, ablett, Franklin and so on... this is probably one of the only areas where the hard-to-master marking is actually a decent feature, as they won't automatically steamroll you even though their stats are far superior.

Now maybe I'm getting old or possibly my years of being a pothead are catching up to me, but this game just feels so fast, too fast!!
Whenever I get possession there is basically no time to find space or a receiver/lead. I also find kick outs really difficult, and wish there was another camera for them which actually let you see your team's structure, and the player lock is too touchy/inconsistent.

I also think there should be an option to cancel handballs once you're holding X, pressing A afterwards should switch to a kick, since the opposition will almost always cut off the lead after you release the handball.

All this being said, I'm not planning on returning it, I haven't yet had the time to get good, which also might never happen.

I don't have a problem with Aus made sports games being trash, it's the nerve of them to charge AAA prices for their games. This is a $60 game.

Played my first pro match as a rookie at tac level

I played the entire first half without being benched and didn't get benched until midway through the 3rd which was because of an injury

I was playing as a forward pocket so I was able to manage my stamina a bit more than a midfielder would

I'm really enjoying the game, seemingly more than most in here, have really worked into it, but this.

This is not a $79-100 game.

Agreed, I don't think anybody expected it to be amazing. The other alternative is no AFL game whatsoever for another 4-5 years if it isn't decently supported. Each to their own I guess, if you're looking at real value for money you are probably looking at it the wrong way, it was never going to meet some people's lofty standards.

Can get it at Target for $75 or JB hifi for $79.

Surely only a moron pays $99 at EB :$

Also I've been playing on camera angle side/far as its the only way I've found to know who you're kicking to, I find it pretty frustrating that the mark timing circle often reaches the 'good timing' mark while the contest is still happening off screen...

They really need to build it from the ground up again, every AFL game since the PS2 era has been essentially the same game.

Disappointing.

According to WW this was recoded from the ground up.....WTF!!!!????

FK WW, FK TruBlu and FK the AFL. Scum bags.

The basic bugs that have been overlooked are a joke. WW will not patch this - they are scum. TruBlu is run by scum who steal money for a living. The AFL are braindead loser scum - Darren Birch needs to be fired.

I for one hope WW goes bankrupt soon. We need Ross and BigAnt if this thing ever has a hope.

I personally think its ridiculous to return it for your money back, unless the game is incomplete like No Mans Sky.

The game is buggy which is annoying but i'm sure it's easily patchable. The kinks in the game and the clunky gameplay is just how the game is. I have personally won a premiership in standard mode once I worked out the marking system, but was frustrated constantly getting outmarked 10-1.

Sure it's trash but like all the other AFL games it's fun to play, and expect it to get better when simple bugs are ironed out. On a side note a lot of the bugs i've experienced should've been spotted when beta testing, the fact there was no demo probably will hurt this game.

If they released this as a demo, no one would have bought the actual game.

(sorry last post)
Has anyone else experience the bug where AI will have a setshot after the siren and it'll bounce through and still be counted as a goal?
What do you mean?
That's legit as far as I'm aware.
It has to be touched by a player to consider the ball dead after the siren.
Ie: Max Rooke after the siren in 2009 grand final.
No one on the mark, no one on the goal line.. dribbled it 30 metres for a goal.

This is an A1 example of dopey comments that should and will be ignored.

Left of field idea, and I know it's a tough ask to expect Australian-centred developers to build a top class game from scratch, existing engines and all that......

But I'd like to see an Aussie Rules game with first person/close third person gameplay to a core degree, not just intermittently. You see the player in the distance unloading a big kick in first person, and you can then switch to a third person view and the marking contest seeing the ball coming directly towards you (it would look a little like the back view of the QB in Madden, except closer and the ball coming in, not being thrown out). You have the ball in first person, head towards a player, and watch the handball fly out of your hands and away towards your target. First person kicks for goal. First person bumping/tackling/king-hitting opposition players, just like any shooter melee. When you've offloaded the ball, you can hit a button and you become the next player - or you can choose to sit through an entire game as one player, and wait 45 minutes for your first possession after coming off the bench (just like most matches in my footy career...can't beat that level of realism...!). You can call for the ball, or you can draw a player or shepherd...all the little things that make the game real. Imagine being FF and wrestling with a FB in third person as the ball comes visibly sailing in, then hitting the grab button at exactly the right instant and taking the mark...then walking back in first person, turning around and taking the full 30 seconds to run in towards goal, watch the ball drop to the foot and then shoot off into the distance...swinging away to the right because you keep selecting torpedo...a message could then flash on screen, where coach Ron Barassi wants to have a quick chat about your accountability, and you run to the bench and get a spray. The possibilities are endless...imagine Tagger mode...

I'm just concerned we'll always keep having these issues, where the game never achieves the perfect balance between the multitude of issues discussed so far, and will always look like a tv telecast with cameras shooting from the Hubble Space Telescope. We know it's the budget, sure, and there are inherent difficulties simply because our game has a huge environment to work with. But it's the PS4, not the PS1 - you could design some seriously spectacular and far more variable graphic action if you zoomed the whole game in and played it like that, and abandoned the notion that you have to have a standard Ch7 commentary box L/R view as your basic screen layout. Seems a waste to have different subtle player motions appearing when the players are normally just convoluted tiny stick figures...

WW will patch it and have said they'll patch it.
I agree some bugs that are present should never have gone undetected.

But have you played DBC14 or 17 made by your saviour BigAnt?

I enjoy those games immensely but imo both them were easily as equally bug ridden at release as Evolution is. A fair few bugs from 14 were present again in 17.
That's just undeniable.
