AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

Sen Brisbane give the lions a lot of coverage all the time, different to sen Sydney, that covers the afl on about the same level as they do for D grade sports like badminton (thanks hutchie you turncoat).

The courier mail is little Lachlan's baby and he's almost as close to Peter v'landy's as Anthony Albanese appears to be, so I don't think they'll get a great go there. I honestly feel like the afl pays the Sydney and Brisbane papers for good coverage if their teams make the gf, so they should still get some exposure in the courier mail, through gritted teeth though.

Lachlan Murdoch is a genuine Broncos fan, and their owner in all but name.

On paper News Corp are the Broncos major owners, but in reality the club is one of Lachlan's personal projects even though he's never had time to be directly involved in the day-to-day operations of the club.

He's quietly one of the most powerful men in RL as well, with most major decisions, particularly where they may directly effect the Broncos, requiring his personal approval. PVL and the NRL didn't give the Dolphins the greenlight to join the league until they had his blessings beforehand for example, and his influence was one of the major forces that got the Vegas deals over the line.

I think you're being overly conspiratorial if you think the AFL struggling for column space and airtime in Brisbane is because of him conspiring to hold Aussie Rules back though. The reality is that RL is simply more popular in Queensland than Aussie Rules, and thus attracts more clicks and sells more papers. No different than the AFL attracting more media attention than RL in Melbourne.

Rupert was another story BTW. He notoriously had zero interest in RL outside of business motives.

Na. Simple business practice in a near monopoly situation.

The reality is that RL is simply more popular in Queensland than Aussie Rules

The gap in participation and crowds isn't enough to be excited about.

thus attracts more clicks and sells more papers.

Poor business practice. People used to read newspapers to garner information about their popular sport but other people also bought newspapers to read about their unpopular sport because that was their own only source.
From a neutral business point of view you wouldn't restrict coverage of a very popular sport that is AFL.

No different than the AFL attracting more media attention than RL in Melbourne.

There is a difference when it's not proportional.
Sydney Swans get the biggest crowds in Sydney yet their coverage was poor to non-existent at most times.
It's my experience that NRL gets a decent coverage in non-traditional states.
it gets coverage in W.A. with no NRL team or decent local league.

I agree with the first bit, on the second though it's very obvious the suppression tactics of news corp towards the afl in Sydney and Brisbane and the over promotion of the storm in Melbourne, who were formed by news corp themselves. This considering the swans are the biggest sporting club in Sydney by a big margin and the storm would be about the 11th biggest sporting club in Melbourne, if I'm being generous.

On another note, you can ask a number of people here about the obvious bias in foxtel and news.com.au coverage. You'll notice a subtle difference in commercials and what gets pushed to the front more and nrl always being mentioned first, despite alphabetically and popularity wise being out of synch with what it should be.

Your bias is glowing so bright that it's blinding...

NRL coverage outside of NSW, Qld, and the ACT is abysmal for the most part.

The Storm get alright coverage in Melbourne depending on the outlet, but other than that the coverage is patchy at best, and disproportionally focuses on scandal and controversy (i.e. negative coverage) over analysis. For the record, the reasons for bad coverage of RL outside the heartlands are easily explained without need for conspiracy as well.

It's a fact that Nine, the NRL's own broadcast partners, were airing NRL games at midnight in most of the country until very recently, within the last decade in most cases, and only changed because of contractual obligation and threats of legal action. So yeah, pretending that the NRL has had it better than the AFL in this regard is just silly frankly

News sold the Storm over a decade ago at this point, and owned half of the rest of the clubs in the NRL at one point. They also intentionally folded multiple of the others that they owned in the past, and actively tried to murder and/or suppress pretty much all of the teams they've never owned. . .

They also actively supressed the NRL's growth to maintain their own profit margins and underpaid for the NRL's broadcasting rights when they half owned the league.

In other words I assure you that they are an aggressively capitalist organisation who hold there own interests first and foremost, and aren't in the habit of handing out favours, especially when it could hurt their bottom line.

Hell there have been times when News have used the AFL as a means to attack the NRL in the past. Some of the short memories around here must have forgotten the "We've always preferred Aussie rules and we've always believed this is the premium code in Australia" saga, as a single example. That was a direct response to the NRL selling rights to Nine, who offered a better deal, that Foxtel expected, no, demanded, be renewed.

News limited owned the Storm until 2013 and tit is now owned by a business associated of the murchochs.

They have a got a very good run. More generally, the Storm have benefited from SEN's relationship with the NRL and so getting substantial access to the AFL audience and have had a decent run on channel 9 fairfax.

The Courier Mail actually got rid of all AFL writers at one point despite the game being objectively far more popular in Brisbane than League is in Melbourne.

You are completely wrong

The News Limited thinks it owns rugby league. Murdoch made a snide remark that one time when the NRL dared sign a TV deal without its approval. Hardly an argument against the NRL generally getting relatively favourable coverage by news limited.

I think they have a modified version of Packer's cricket strategy. Own a sport and milk the cash.

This has become more relevant as technology has dislocated FTA TV. The main things people all watch live at the same time are sporting events. Great for advertising money, and starving your competitor of eyeballs. Most other things can be pirated or streamed.

In states that don't have a NRL side I would say the NRL gets more than a fair share of publicity.

The Storm get alright coverage in Melbourne

There you go.

reasons for bad coverage of RL outside the heartlands are easily explained without need for conspiracy as well.

Yes, that's because NRL doesn't exist. We're talking negative antics on well established and popular AFL clubs.

in most cases, and only changed because of contractual obligation and threats of legal action.

exactly my point. Stations were forced to show an unprofitable product - conspiracy.
.
So yeah, pretending that the NRL has had it better than the AFL

I'm not saying that the NRL has had it better, I'm saying and it's extremely easy to demonstrate
is that the AFL has been historically shafted and continues to receive less than commensurate coverage.

In other words I assure you that they are an aggressively capitalist organisation who hold there own interests first and foremost, and aren't in the habit of handing out favours, especially when it could hurt their bottom line.

Yes, the same people who suppress AFL as much as possible all the time - what's there to debate ?

This is an interesting take coz what I'm reading from you is staggering bias, which you're famous for in here being a league man.

I challenge you to check out for a few weeks sen Sydney compared to sen Melbourne. The swans and giants are lucky to get 1 interview per week in Sydney, the storm get about 5 in Melbourne, despite the swans being the biggest club in the whole state and nobody really caring about the storm down here, which all the numbers reflect.

L.Murdoch is a leaguie first and foremost, have a look at the telegraph and courier mail, I had a look last night, barely anything despite their local teams being in the afl grand final. News.ltd even threatened the government into building a rectangular stadium for the storm, or they wouldn't give them decent coverage.

Plus on 9, storm games are on 9 main here more than swans and giants games are on 7 main up there. I know this was poor for them in the past, but you're going back over 5 years. You know that coming from Canberra and getting the Sydney feed how few nsw teams games get on 7 main.

On the tv rights, you make the mistake like a lot of leagiues in believing the lie that their tv ratings are better. This year with the new reach metric being the way they rank, shows it's not even close, have a look at the head to head this finals series, the afl has been outrating the nrl by a million viewers on fta when it's an equal comparison (ie. No overlapping games, both sports the same prime time slots etc, that's not even including fox and kayo which would widen the gap even more). The nrl got exactly what they deserved for the tv rights, it reflects the numbers, 2/3rds the worth of the afl tv rights. Stop listening to Peter v'landy's (biggest sport in Australia) claims and actually do the research.

I also found it interesting the other day that we just had a preliminary final for the ages, the highest rating nrl or afl game for the entire season and news.com.au run the main story on their 'national news' site as the Broncos saving $1 million on their Reece Walsh contract.

Now even best case that the coverage was equal, which it is not, it would still be unfair considering afl is inherently more popular in Sydney and Brisbane, than the nrl is in Melbourne. If you don't see the suppression tactics from L.Murdoch and his relationship with his great mate Peter Vlandy's, you're living on another planet.

"Yes Peter, I'll even put the Vegas game on fox 1 into the u.s and completely embarrass ourselves for you."

I tuned into ABC Brisbane 612AM this morning at 8am for their brekky show. Off the bat, AFL and the Lions all over it. The co host, can’t remember her name, is a Lions tragic and they certainly had a good session on the AFL with Quentin Hull their sports guy. It’s pretty big news in SEQ I can be certain of that.

Yep footy is flying in QLD. Crash Craddock on sen whateley this morning gives a good description as to how it's going with promotion this week. senQ does a great job promoting the game up there.

Starts about half way through

For contrast, sen Sydney gave nothing today as usual, other than when they were joined by the senq crew talking about afl gf. As usual the sen Sydney crew sounded like they sucked on a lemon when the afl was mentioned. It's actually embarrassing these guys are on air with their intentional lack of knowledge about the biggest sport in the country, well done hutchie on hiring these Muppets.

From 3 minute mark:
