AFL players who smoke

Smokers should wear a space helmet when they light up in public so we don't have to breathe their muck!
But people driving four-wheel drives on suburban roads is okay? I am not going to defend a silly habit which only around 16% of the adult population engage in, but when you really consider it, the anti-smoking agenda has gone too far. You are not even allowed to grow your own "cleaner" tobacco lest we put a dent in the tax the government happily collects.

If only all the smokers in the country got organised en masse to quit at once, the economy would collapse and THAT would be ****ing hilarious! The red faced government would be so stuck for words I'd be beside myself.

Having said all that, I truly cannot believe that there are modern footy players who still smoke, especially during the season. Gotta take their fitness down a few pegs you'd think.

Yeah that was good. The problem with the "tax vs health expenditure" assessment in many cases is that people quote expenditure on all IHD/cancer etc. not just the proportion of which is directly caused by smoking.

Besides, there are many other toxic substances out there which we DO NOT have up to date information on...well, if we DO have that information it is not promoted. Eg. the endemic vegetable oils such as canola oil (which is in almost EVERY pre-packaged "food" product in the supermarkets) oxidise the LDL in our blood and cause intimal injury (same mechanism of action as cigarette smoke causing damage to blood vessel walls, leading to plaque formation and heart disease), but even today mainstream doctors don't know this (and if they're told most of them deny it because the erroneous anti-saturated fat propaganda of the 80's/90's was so powerful).

Sometimes, having too much correct information is bloody frustrating.

Who really cares?
If a player is dumb enough to smoke good luck to them.
I'm sure there are plenty of players that are social smokers. So players that only smoke while they are out/drinking.
If it helps some let there hair down does it really matter?
It's not illegal.

ive heard that a few times that he does, the more suprising part is that he is one of the fittest players & hardest runners at the club

I played senior soccer as an 18 year old and smoked provably a pack a day. Was easily the fittest and the fastest on the team.

I don't blame you. I'd be annoyed too if I found out a Hawk player was smoking regularly (or even at all). It's that detrimental to your aerobic ability that it would be infuriating to know that any player could be that much better if they simply didn't do it. Imagine we found out Buddy secretly had been smoking for his entire career. Yeah he's an athletic freak and is probably aerobically superior to most KPF in the history of the game - but that he could've been even better but wasn't just because of that.
Three Normies, a captaincy, 8 premierships , 5 AA's between the two Hawks players I need not To name.

anybody who is under 30 and smokes (footy player or not) is an idiot!
there is enough info around about what it does
older people didn't have the same info.
my 2 cents worth
I take it you don't drink then? Based on he info that's around now...

A huge amount would socially smoke

The average AFL footballer is dumber than you think.

The amount who do party drugs is simply ridiculous, so why not ciggies too?

What's the go with Stanton? Everybody says he smashes darts... Surely can't be true? He's essendons best runner!

Exaggerated like most rumours. No doubt he's had a few darts on mad Mondays and end of season trips like most people but it's not even a semi regular thing.

He's one of the best distance runners in the league and still slaughters everyone in time trials every pre season.

It's a good story because it's so at odds with his fitness, hence it gets repeated a lot and blown out of proportion.

Am I the only one who hasn't heard the term "dart" before reading this thread?
