So 25m as an absolute stab in the dark was a pretty good guess.
Also are you talking NBA courts or FIBA courts?

Not bad haha the dimensions i said are FIBA, nba is bigger again

We have a unique game and we should be trying to keep it that way. Having your name on the back of your jumper is just big noting yourself. If we don't watch it we will soon be subjected to fools ranting that they are the best corner back's in the game soon. Not a good look.

The thing is, we should be trying to protect the things that make our game unique, not making it look just the same as all the other codes. Soccer, NFL, Basketball all doing it is an argument for me for the AFL not to do it.

it'll be unique.

AFL jumpers will be cluttered like a 14 yr old's bedroom.

what with the little odd to the heritage or market some clubs have at the top of the jumper, then the player name, the number below that, then the biggest sponsors logo/product on jumper underneath it all, the back of jumper will just be full of alpa-numeric characters, graphic designs and fonts not related to the design of the jumper at all. and those clubs with any designs such as stripes will just be pushed down further making them redundant and giving more of them a different look from front and back.

games will look like even more of a dogs breakfast with two teams and all the shit with differing designs, colours (inc sponsors colours) and writing on jumpers.

It will go further than that

The AFLPA will demand that their names are displayed in impact bold font for maximum merchandise revenue punch

The numbers will follow obviously for consistency

The back of the guernsey will be entirely covered in a jumbled wall of text

Because of that there will be more light than dark on the back of a guernsey with white numbers, causing the worst clashes in the history of the game when viewed from behind

Mitch Robinson will get confused by this and crash tackle his teammate Dale Thomas so hard from behind that he literally breaks him in half, killing him instantly

A few Carlton fans will imply that Daisy deserved what he got for winning Collingwood a flag

In response, tens of thousands Collingwood fans will take to the streets with torches and pitchforks, killing every Carlton fan they find. In order to survive, remaining Carlton fans pretend to be Collingwood fans and join the mob.

With no Carlton fans left, the Collingwood army now in it's hundreds of thousands begin targeting other clubs supporters

The population of Melbourne is reduced to 500,000, all Collingwood fans.

The rest of the country will build a giant wall around the Melbourne metropolitan area

Eddie McGuire challenges Tony Abbott to a footy match between Collingwood and a representative side from the interstate sides, with the winner to gain total and undisputed control of Victoria

For some ungodly reason Matthew Nicholls umpires the game, and pays a horrendous deliberate out of bounds against Gary Ablett in the dying seconds, leading to Dayne Beams kicking the winning goal after the siren.

Victoria is renamed Collingwoodtopia.

It's the only feasible result of the AFL putting names on the back of guernseys.

it's all for tele and merchandising. nothing at all to do with being readable live at the ground.

People watch goal and incident replays on the big screen at the ground all the time. And people sitting in the close seats will be able to read them live.

The only argument you guys have is the other sports do it so we shouldnt??? Does it make one difference to the game itself? No. It helps new fans of the game identify with which players are which.

I think it'll help everyone. When I'm at games I'm certainly not looking at my bloody phone while the players are running around.

What are some of the things players saying about this???

I'm trying to imagine how the thread would look if names had been on guernseys for however long and the AFL wanted to remove them.

haha yeah, people are pretending it will be too cluttered. i can imagine them pretending it'll be too plain without. really they just need something to do, something to complain about. this is such a small thing, and it's a positive thing, it helps us, so what's the big deal? people just scared we're "becoming like the NFL".

To all the haters, mainly blinkered victorians, this is going to happen.

The AFL is trying to grow the game in northern states.

Unfortunately a lot of people will have to accept it..

It's not going to physically harm anyone. I'm ok with it.
Not sure what the first point has to do with the last though. The AFL could change Port's jumper colours to pink, purple and orange and no one would be physically harmed but it doesn't make it a good idea.

I'd be happy for names on the jumper if the AFL then banned sponsors on the back of jumpers and in return kicked in 1 mil extra per year for each club. Then we'd have no net effect of increased clutter. In fact that sounds like a great idea.

I wouldn't say scared, more annoyed that we are losing certain traits that were/are pretty unique to our great game

TBH from reading the thread those in favour of it have pretty much the same argument, other sports do it so we should too.

Probably why we've had 17 pages of people going around in circles.

Yet the ball moves slowly enough for you to identify a name on the back of a jumper? (a back which you'll see in less than 25% of play).

I understand in Canada you'd get average commentary so that makes sense, but I think you're overstating how much easier it will make it. You'll barely be able to identify the names and then end up having to look them up anyways.

I have been watching hockey for 40 years - it is an extremely fast-moving game - and the names on the back of jerseys have been greatly helpful. There are plenty of pauses in the AFL after a mark is taken, reading names won't be a problem. The photos someone posted in this thread with names, looked really good.

Back of Harvey's jumper in that picture is a cluttered mess.
That's a bad mock up lol

Check this out.

No clutter . . . .

I've been following footy all my life and I don't remember 400 players numbers either. I don't need to. The only numbers I know are my own teams' and a few superstars from other teams. To be honest though, I don't recognise Hawthorn players by their numbers but by the way they run, mark, kick, their build and their looks. I don't know Gary Ablett's number but I sure as hell recognise him whenever I see him play - there is no one like him! If I see a player from another team that interests me, in the unlikely event I don't hear him identified by a commentator, I just look him up. I really don't think names on jumpers are going to expediate the identification process much if at all.

Watching hockey for the past 40 years - player names on jerseys has been an excellent thing. For people like me to want to understand the game more, having the names is very helpful. Often I will see a player make a subtle but good play and want to know who he is. If all I see is a number, that may not help me but, if I even catch half the name as he runs by, that will likely give me what I need. Not really excited about having to grab my phone and look up the number after a play.

The only opposition I see to this is that people don't like change. For the good of growing the sport, this is a great idea. At the start of last year, I had no idea who Gary Ablett was - a new fan would like to see the names.

Actually thats not the argument. As ive said it will help with new fans getting to know the players on the field etc

Well to be honest the masturbation over the NFL and the amount of times players, coaches etc mention what they do there gives me the shits. I wonder if the players would like the shorter season like in the NFL and take a pro rata pay cut?

Hockey has what 11 players on the field for each team, and to be fair in the olympics etc you cant read them until a stop in play and once again in hockey theyre quite rare.

So in summary, 2 gold coast fans are for it, and most others are against it.
All this tells me is that you havent been following footy enough to learn the names, whether they're on the guernsey or not.

There will be ZERO visibility of names while attending games.
