Names on jumpers, good idea?

Whether or not names are on the back of jumpers doesn't really bother me, but the worst people can think of is "the back will be cluttered". There is no way it will have any negative impact upon how the game is played or watched and there are people in here fighting it tooth and nail. It's bizarre.
Yep, that's pretty much where I stand, I'm neither for or against it until I see whether there is any point to it, but if they do bring it in I just don't see why it would matter to anyone.

It tells me you can't follow fast action and are scared of change.

I can commentate the game with no names required, could almost do it with no numbers too consdering how much footy I watch.
Doubt following the action is an issue for me. Can guarantee you though, from a commentators perspective there will be virtually no improvement in being able to know who is who.

Get a grip

Stupid analogies required to get through to stupid people.
Why is the AFL always looking to change things that arent broken or dont require improvement.

Hell they should get rid of the bloody clashing jumpers before worrying about putting names on them.

I am not too concerned about how the commentators benefit from the names on the backs, I know I will benefit greatly. Anything that makes the players better known and more marketable will add to the bottom line for the AFL. To grow the game means bringing in new fans - new fans want to learn who the players are and the name on the back helps that happen.

There is no valid reason not to do it.

With the endless sanitization of it's rules AFL football just resembles basketball more and more each year. Might as well add the names to the singlets.

I have never had anyone new to the game say to me they wished there were names on jumpers, nor have I had anyone tell me they didn't get into Aussie Rules because there were no names on jumpers. When you get into a new sport it's because you like the sport not because of peripheral things like names on jumpers. This whole argument about making it easier for new fans is a complete furphy. It's being done for marketing purposes. Do we have to have our traditions sacrificed for marketing?

Will be handy when watching gws or melbourne and you wonder who the f*** is that

Names on guernseys is americanisation? But we have sponsor logos everywhere and they have never done that....

Hockey has what 11 players on the field for each team, and to be fair in the olympics etc you cant read them until a stop in play and once again in hockey theyre quite rare.

So in summary, 2 gold coast fans are for it, and most others are against it.
All this tells me is that you havent been following footy enough to learn the names, whether they're on the guernsey or not.

Not true.

What it has shown me is that most seem to not see the issue if there were names, while a few are against it for no reason other than "a change".

If the AFL wanted to be more like basketball, we would have 18 on the field and 22 on the bench. As long as that doesn't happen I'm happy.

How many players names fund their salaries?
Our league need sponsors to survive. derp.

I'm just saying that if it were a choice between 'Australianising' a sport by adding gaudy sponsor logos to team uniforms (which, in case you haven't noticed, they don't actually do in American pro sports), and 'Americanising' a sport by having player names on uniforms, I know which one I'd prefer.
