Names on jumpers, good idea?

I personally don't mind the idea. Interested to see how it looks on the respective team jumpers.

Will certainly help Basil. His Dempsey/Ryder goal confusion in the Fremantle game really annoyed me,
and he's had many more blunders just like it

Not against the concept but I don't see the need for it. Won't make an iota of difference when it comes to assisting punters in the stands with identifying particular players, as names sewn onto the back of jumpers will appear pretty small to the naked eye.

Seems as though this is another revenue-raising/marketing exercise from the AFL aimed at getting a handful of kids and people in non-traditional markets to buy said jumpers. Probably an unpopular opinion but the kowtowing to these demographics can really be overdone sometimes IMO.

To reiterate- whilst player names on jumpers wouldn't particularly bother me, it comes across as a somewhat unnecessary and pointless idea.

People say it's an Americanisation, but Soccer has surely been doing it even longer? I don't think it's a bad idea, but certainly more helpful for a television audience than those actually at the game.

So this is the result of his mid season American junket? Vlad thinks names on the guernsey are going to help sway rugby fans in NSW and QLD to watch AFL? I can 't wait to see how they fit Kolodjashnij on the back....surely we have more important things to? Why the Americanisation of our game Vlad?

Overall it will help a bit though, as you will see them a lot on the TV as well and you'll get to learn their numbers a lot sooner as a result of that and then when you see them live at the game you'll recognise them a lot sooner than you otherwise might have.

This is it for me.

I can handle performance drugs, I can handle drunken bashings, I can handle drink driving, I can handle cocaine binges but I'll be damned if I'll sit by and watch someone put a name on the back of a jumper.

SACK VLAD!

You'll only see the name on close shots. On a wide angle shot or sitting in the stands the letters will be too small to read.

****ing stupid idea.

******* stupid idea.

Don't understand this logic. Those arguments can be used in ANY sport that has a name attached on the back. It's purely a fan service ala basketball jerseys in public. Of course, if you're a big enough fan, you'll know what number correlates to which player. However, if someone has a passing interest in the sport, or isn't familiar with team numbers, it gives those people an insight.

I like the idea, and now that I live in an NRL dominate state like New South Wales, would take pride in wearing the name "Pavlich" on my back, long after the number #29 gives up the game.

This is not for the spectators at the ground.

I do look forward to seeing them fit Kolojashnij or Bontempelli on the back of a jumper though! :D

Edit: too slow

Thought I covered that in my brief post.

If you're watching on TV, you'll have to wait until the one person you can't identify has his back in a view that allows you to read his name. On a basketball court there are ten guys in a relatively small space and the ball moves in a predictable fashion. In the AFL the ball moves more quickly over a greater area with more players.

Given you can now sit at home with your tablet and check the numbers on the AFL app or any number of other sources adding the names to the back seems superfluous.

The idea is that on close ups you can see it, and that this is all a money-spinning exercise anyway. Exactly like in soccer.

Urgh. Can't we just leave well enough alone?

Ice Hockey? NFL? Soccer?

Superfluous argument. It has little to do with the telecast.

OP, why isn't there a Jack Watts option?

Anyway, stupid move.
Further proof how much Vlad wants to dumb down the game.

Watch it seep through to the local leagues and Vlad claiming it a success.
He'll then move to the Gold Coast and bathe in his billions of dollars worth of screwing the game.

What a Syd.
