It’s official. 2017 is done for Collingwood. Any mathematics that gave them a chance of making finals were swept away after losing to Port Adelaide last week. It’s been a season that never quite got going for the Magpies, as at times they looked like a side that could compete with the best, and at times they looked like one of the worst sides in the competition. Perhaps it show just how mediocre the side is. Geelong on the other hand are looking to charge towards September, eyeing yet another top four berth. It won’t come easy though for the Cats. The Magpies are a known bogey side for Geelong, and always manage to give the side a run for its money. Since 2013, Collingwood have win four of the past six matchups against the Cats.
Collingwood
Collingwood’s finals hopes were ended with another frustrating yet predictable performance against the Power in Adelaide last week. Although many key players were out with injury, the Magpies were able to hold their own against Port Adelaide, but burnt any chance they had with missed opportunities and bad turnovers. Players like Fasolo and Blair continued to struggle, with many Magpie fans questioning their spot in the side. It wasn’t all bad for the Magpies though, with Ben Reid showing what he can do down in the forward line, kicking four goals as the rest of the forward line struggled. Taylor Adams also continued his strong season with a 31 disposal game. However, outside of the top tier of players for the game, no one else really stood out for the Magpies. Highlighting the key issue for Collingwood, elite top tier talent, but not much else beneath that. Collingwood will have some confidence though, as they always seem to turn up against the Cats, winning four out of the last six.
The man to watch this week is the son of Magpie great, Josh Daicos. The debut has been long awaited, with the club putting in place the strenuous routine that rookies need to complete in order to earn a senior debut. Although he is yet to play a game, Daicos has generated significant interest among Magpie fans.
Geelong
Like Collingwood fans, the 2017 season has been somewhat of a frustration for Geelong fans. At times showing why they could be premiership favorites with fellow premiership favorite in Adelaide, has also been matched with poor efforts against sides like Collingwood and Gold Coast. Geelong produced a brilliant win against the Tigers last week. When they were on the ropes, Geelong fought back like the champion side that they are to produce a fighting win. This win came without half of their dynamic duo, with Joel Selwood out for the remainder of the regular season, opting for surgery to come back in top shape for what Geelong fans hope to be a deep run into September. Geelong’s form has not been flattering of late, with heavy losses to fellow premiership contenders in Sydney and Adelaide. Geelong will hope to overcome Collingwood to cement a top four place.
The man to watch is Patrick Dangerfield. The best player in the competition, Dangerfield is used to dominating teams. However, his two encounters as a Cat against the Magpies have been rather forgettable. This could be partly due to a bad game, or perhaps Nathan Buckley’s men have worked out Dangerfield, and use this to quell his influence.

It’s been mentioned quite a lot during the week, Collingwood are Geelong’s bogey side. However, Geelong will be determined to sew up a critical top four spot, which should launch them deep in September.
