They used to let lapsed members "jump the queue" and rejoin back as full members or at the same spot in the waitlist but you had to pay the absentee fee for the years you were lapsed. I think it was capped at 2 years though so if you came back after 5 years they probably wouldn't do it but it doesn't hurt to ask them I guess.

No time limit for absentee as long as you paid the fee every year. I was a Gold member before I went to absentee for 6 or 7 years straight. Rejoined back as a full member, straight back to Gold. Mate did something similar except he was Silver and still climbed the waitlist during his absentee period.

Think they are changing the rules from next year though, where going forward you can only register as an absentee for a max of 1 year in total during your membership period.

I wonder how many they would catch if they were actually trying to crack down on it.
The way they stick out like dogs balls, you would have to be a complete idiot to be caught out by them. Unless they checked everyone as they entered (which wont ever happen as it is impractical) it would be so easy to bypass.

Yep but I was talking about members who let their membership lapse, ie they don't renew and so don't have a membership for several years. They used to let you join back up and go back on as a full member if you covered the absentee fees for the years you don't hold a membership, it wasn't meant to exceed 2 years but plenty of people have said they had no membership for longer than 2 years and were able to rejoin as full members.

Yes this happened after covid

One thing I noticed on Saturday (in the first quarter when it was a game) was it was LOUD. Very loud. I listen with an earpiece at the game and very often couldn’t hear the commentary with the volume right up. That’s rare.

It was genuinely louder than last year.

My assumption being, it felt like there were very very few neutrals in there on Saturday.

Combined with the fact it sold out so fast - pretty obvious that heaps and heaps of members scalped their tickets. I would suggest waaaay more than in previous years, when they either don’t bother trying to get tickets, or go themselves as a neutral.

Sign of the times I guess, people are struggling and need the cash.

I love GF's and would never scalp. It was a great day

Yeah I enjoy it and go every year. Up to other people what they do, my only issue is if it continues to be so blatant then the AFL will use it as an excuse to take tickets off AFL members.

I think if they publicise and enforce that the punishment is automatic expulsion from gold membership then that would stop it.

Two things to report from Saturday

1. I was asked if I was an AFL Member and to show my ticket to enter the Hayden Bunton Bar

2. The Standing Room Bay behind my seat seemed to be Sydney heavy . I wonder if they were AFL Members

we know that high paying interstate club members ( not afl club support ) get access to afl reserve.

Nathan Buckley on SEN Breakfast this morning, "Sat in M16 through the AFL Gold Pass you get for playing a few games"
AFL life members (300 games) have always had access to the GF. I'm not sure if they have to login to Ticketek though, maybe they get access during competing club sale period, M16 is first cab off the rank. The problem is I'm sure a lot of them palm them off to friends.

Yep. They get 2 tickets. I heard Tony Shaw on radio after 2017 say he gave his 2 to his daughters because he was working on radio for the game.
It p*sses me off that a lot of the whinging about ticket allocations focuses on AFL and MCC members. Well, we are all loyal and pay up every year. Even if we don't follow one of the teams we are real fans. It's the corporates and mates/ scalpees of players and life members that annoy me.
