Personally, I'd aim for 1 game a year.

But a complete rep weekend mid year.

Year 1
1 (Saturday Night). Victoria vs Western Australia
2 (Friday Night). South Australia vs Queensland
3 (Saturday Afternoon). Tasmania vs New South Wales

Year 2
1. Winner match 1 vs Winner match 2
2. Loser match 1 vs Winner match 3
3. Loser match 2 vs Loser match 3

etc.

Treat it like a promotion/relegation type battle year on year.
Coin toss to determine home team.

As much as the top match is the big match every year, I fell that needs to be the crescendo. So Friday Night is the #2 match and the big match is to round it out on Saturday night.
This is basically the system they had between 1995 and 1998, except with only four teams. Essentially there was a ranking in place, with 1v2, 3v4, and the winner of 3v4 earning the right to play the winner of 1v2 (i.e. Victoria) the following year.

It's not a completely crazy idea, but it didn't exactly capture anyone's imagination - it coincided with a major drop in interest in SoO. My guess is you'd just end up with the same match ups every two years (this is what happened between 95 and 98). I don't recall the lure of promotion adding much to the 3v4 match ups.

Anyway, the biggest issue is that playing it during the season, every season will just result in players not wanting to be involved and risk injury, particularly where they've already represented their state.

In the the almost impossible eventuality that it did return, it couldn't be every year and would need to be post-season.
Personally, I would like to see it in place of International Rules. Maybe alternating between them. SoO would need to be rare enough to be a lure for players who might only get a few chances in a career.

Possible WA team

FB: Starcevich - Taylor - Broad
HB: Baker - Barrass - Powell
C: B Hill - Cripps - N Martin
HF: Zurhaar - Naughton - Bolton
FF: Walters - Franklin - Allen
R: English - Kelly - Warner

I: Johannisen - J Clark - T Mitchell - Coniglio

Reckon this team would give anyone a run for their money

1. Victoria
2. South Australia
3. Western Australia
4. Tasmania
5. New South Wales
6. Queensland
7. Northern Territory
8. ACT

Think bigger. The NRL origin goes over 3 weeks.

So...

Vic v ACT
SA v NT
WA v QLD
Tas v NSW

Assuming the highest ranked team wins

Week 2

Vic v Tas
SA v WA

Week 3

Vic V SA

Play it during the week like origin.

Top ranked teams can use their depth week 1 to ensure no players get overdone.

ACT would have nowhere near enough. Hence combining it with NSW. And that's also why you'd split Vic in two.

Because it would be balanced with consistent talent coming through out of both. Plenty of players elsewhere and could settle the 'I want to go home factor; for a lot of clubs. Great stadiums, plenty of passion for it by both states and it would always be a spectacle.
I think any SOO would have to also involve Victoria at the very least

I know you guys like to think so but there’s only 22 spots in a team to fill

Could you break it down to Metro and Country?

That’s great.

There’s no possible way players such as Tim English, Oscar Allen, Cam Zurhaar, Nic Martin, Liam Baker ect. would be able to perform to their usual standards having not won a jacket.

They’re all great players and could roll any side on their day.

No; I like people from the country.

That’s great.

All very good players.

Because neither could compete with Vic unless the scales are tilted in ways that aren't really possible/likely any more.
Yeah the Vics would start favourites but there’s no doubt other states could very realistically give them a run for their money. There’s enough quality built up around the country from each representative area to put together 22 players.

The way some Vic posters carry on you’d think it was impossible for anyone else to topple them.

For the best part of the last decade WA could’ve put a team together which would’ve more than matched anything Victoria could put together.

You enjoyed watching Carlton spank West Coast by 100 points that much eh?
You act as though Victoria weren’t South Australia’s bitches in the late 80’s early 90’s and WA were giving you guys a jolly rogering every now and then for shits and gigs.

I'd love to see it return. Seeing the passion last night from the blues and maroons only reminded me of the passion I remember being shown for the big V.

You could actually do it over 2 days in Perth around this time of year, this part of the footy season is a real grind and needs a kick along and something to look forward to. Also the AFL is giving a significant advantage to its competitor and should be showing off that the game is played all across the country, not just in 2 states.

Have all the best players in the country converging of Perth for a footy festival, representing their state in one day each at Optus stadium.

  • Teir 2 teams on the Saturday (QLD, NSW, TAS, N.T)
  • Tier 1 teams on the Sunday (METRO, COUNTRY, S.A, W.A).

W.A government would pay about 10 mill for it, as it's similar to another gather round, but not as big (gather round 25 mill). Tv at least 5 mill, considering it's equivalent of 4 extra games for tv.

I also like Perth for this concept, because it has the most ex pats from other states in Australia (other than Brisbane) and Western Australia's are very parochial and state proud.

The way you do it is have the teams play half games (two 30 min halves) to determine the winner, then crown the division champ at the end of the day. Then each team is playing 2 games, but it's technically 2 halves, so 1 game worth of toll on the body for each team.

Each game is approx 1.05hr from start to finish.

Example, Optus stadium, Perth :
1pm - metro v country
2.30 pm - sa v w.a

4.10 pm losers play ie. Vic Country v s.a
7.10 pm final (primetime) - Vic metro v w.a

8.30 pm, Vic metro crowned champions, lift the trophy.

NRL Origin means a lot to the fans and the players, possible as much or even more than the grand final.

AFL it's just a kick and giggle. I don't think it would be played at the competitive level as a normal home and away game, more like a practice game.

Aussie rules state of origin came from a time when it was pretty much interleague. Then it became a national competition and slowly all the players came from the same league and then eventually interest was lost and players and clubs didn't want to do it as the game had become too professional and physically tolling.

I think Victoria are far too strong for the other states as well and no one truly identifies with the "all stars". Victoria have been too strong for the other states at U18 level hence why there is a vic country and vic metro, it's the same at senior level.

I think if you want to bring it back and make it work there needs to be good money involved for the players participating as well as prize money. Players will play for money if the price is right, they won't play for the honour of representing their state.

Either way the clubs will hate it as it means nothing to them and they won't want to see their stars playing in an unnecessary game that could see them get injured. Sports scientists will hate it, work loads etc.

Perhaps a City V Country game could produce a game we could all associate with as well as producing a competitive game.

As much as I would love to see competitive games of state of origin, I don't think it's going to happen.

The players get paid to play, get to be recognised as the elite of the competition and get their bye the week before or after, not split over a million weeks like currently.

I think people are in the mindset it needs to be as big as the rugby one from day dot, a full house at Optus stadium and a good tv audience due to the novelty factor can only be good for the game, even if it's not massive from the first day.

It's the same thing as gather round and all the naysayers around that, you've gotta try new things. It could be very successful if tried in a different format and you make it like a footy festival and boys trip, right in the heart of the Victorian winter when people wanna travel to warmer weather.
