AFL the "national sport" of Australia

The only reason NSW follows rugby is because in the early days of Australia their state still wanted to cling to servitude of the UK, this attitude was seen as 'proper'. Of course Qld were a part of NSW back then so they had to follow. Victoria rejected this idea, and were more in tune with the unique identity of independant Australia which was emerging.

Or was rugby league the more faster, exciting, tougher game ????

I think i got you there:D

Supporting Australian Football is the most Australian thing one can do and that is why it will always be popular. Just like Americans love their sports (baseball, basketball and American Football) Australians (including people in NSW) have pride in their own sport (Australian Rules Football).

Throwing a pass of a rugby league ball is just as australian as kicking a red sherrin.

The NRL competition is every bit as australian as the AFL competition.

According to some of the Rugby league supporters on this forum, AFL is an IMPORTED sport in NSW and Queensland.

People around the World know who Rusty is, looks like he is spreading the word on Rugby League, the Australian game. :thumbsu:

So yes that does mean Nine has an extra game, but because there are now 16 teams there are no more byes so there is one extra game - also the third Sunday game has moved to Monday nights so Fox can show it live - meaning that Fox gets all it's games live, 5 live games where before it had 3 live (I think).

I just thought that today, i forgot there was an extra game, does this mean that Ch.9 have paid more for the tv rights for this season compared to last, or was it stated in their tv rights contract that there would be a team joining the comp. in 07?

I would've thought Foxtel would want a Friday night game, although having MNF really does make up for it.

Yeah russel hates AFL......good on him rugby league is the true national sport of this country (don't beleive all the AFL spin docs)

I bet if I came to your house, it would be packed full of products from around the world, yet why don't YOU buy the Aussie alternative? .

I think Fred would buy the Aussie alternative if he could .
Can you supply a list of anything important made in Australia these days ?
Australian Football is one of the few true Australian exports left .

:(

Shame the "global spokesman" for league happens to be an utter twat... ;)

A lot of people from NSW and Qld don't understand, that Australian Football is a lot bigger within its heartlands compared to what Rugby League is within its heartlands and Football has far bigger following outside it's heartlands compared to Rugby League outside it's heartlands.

And to prove the point if you take all 42 cities with over 30,000 in Australia (source) .They all have at least one Australian Football club whereas 10 have no Rugby League which include:

Hobart, Tasmania 205,510
Launceston, Tasmania 103,835
Bendigo, Victoria 85,978
Burnie-Devonport, Tasmania 79,954
Mandurah, Western Australia 77,619
Latrobe Valley, Victoria (incl. Moe, Morwell, Traralgon) 75,553
Bunbury, Western Australia 59,033
Mildura, Victoria 48,836
Warrnambool, Victoria 31,569
Geraldton, Western Australia 31,555

So the argument that NSW and Qld have over 50% of Australias population blah blah blah. begs the question. Why stop at state barriers you could go even further like Statistical Divisions, Council size, etc? But the best way is to break it down to individuals and with no doubt Australian Football comes out on top and by a fair margin.

I'm pretty sure the NRL had a new rights deal starting this year as well - same as the AFL.

Foxtel probably would have liked a Friday night game, but Nine having two games means they can show one game a week live and delay the other game - they would have put in a lot more money to do that.

You AFL kids have got to understand, in most of NSW and QLD, Aussie rules is seen as the imported, invader sport.

Rugby League has been in Australia for almost 100 years, and the original Rugby has been here longer than that.
For the last few decades NSW and QLD has been -the- heartland of Rugby League in the world.

But most people don't give a rats arse about that. They care that they went to the footy on sunday with dad, (often to follow the same team great-grandad did). They don't care if the sport originally came from England, its -their- sport with the history in -their- community.

Ted, do you feel English for speaking this language, even though you do it with an Australian accent and probably have done for generations? Maybe -you- should go out and learn an aboriginal language, and stop apeing England and embarassing yourself speaking this colonial import language.

Aussie rules is the import sport in NSW/QLD. People in NSW/QLD love their footy team as much as people in aussie rules states do. And now these people see a different and previously unknown code coming in, cashed up, and on a mission to push the local code (and hence the local teams) aside and take its crowds, its sponsors and its juniors.
Aussie Rules is not 'our game' because its Australian. To many in NSW/QLD Its an import, and its Victoria's game.

Its obviously not how a lot of you people see it, particularly Ted, but thats a common view from NSW and QLD.

LMAO :D . You're actually bragging about Russel Crowe? He's an international laughing stock and a Kiwi.

btw, if the phone chucker hates Footy why does his bio say he Is an avid supporter of the Richmond Tigers.? ;)

So because he is talking up League around the World, he is a laughing stock? He was also on Jay Leno, and presented him with a Bunnies jersey, and spoke about the game.

Don't be upset because no one of note is doing the same for AFL. Jealousy is a curse, buddy. ;)

So using your analogy, if Newcastle has an AFL club, then that city can be classed as having an AFL presence?

There really is no point to all this. 15 minutes googling participation, attendance, polling response and Television figures can tell any neutral that on every measurably indice footy is ahead of league nationwide.

Some league lads are in denial for whatever reasons but no amount of evidence will change them. Flat Earthers simply don't want the world to be round and won't admit it even though deep down secretly they do realise. Same with our resident deniers.

These threads simply go round and round but after it all footy will still have more than twice as many active players and twice the active fanbase nationwide and will still attract more to non primetime finals than League does to Sun primetime which is reflected in a far bigger TV deal. The facts will remain the same and so will the denial of them.

You ugly league blokes really are grasping at straws now, aren't ya ;)

Do you have any idea how insecure you sound? Crowe has been a laughing stock ever since the phone throwing thing but I bet you're so desperate for anything "Russ" is now a "legend" in your eyes.

If ya really want to pull your d**k you might mention Australia week in LA & NY where Footy is attended and talked up by Nicole Kidman, Rupert Murdoch, Hugh Jackman, Steve Irwin (RIP) etc. Cricket, netball and AFL the only games that have been played there because they are seen as being unique cultural identifiers of Australia, rugby and soccer aren't.

Desperate? All I did was show you that Russ is telling people around the World that league is Australia's #1 game. Don't shoot the messenger and get all shrill on me.

The LA thing is a great way to showcase Australia, we should have more of that kind of thing. Only thing is, how much exposure did the game get when 1,000 turned up? Furthermore, are you sure that they will be doing it again in 2008?

I didn't even respond to your post about "Russ". I pointed to LR out that as a person he is a laughing stock and you jumped in defending your hero and telling us all how "Russ" is turning Rugby into America's new number 1 sport, and how I am jealous
