Hopefully this is the afl realising that the best way to end the draft being a farce is just give every club an academy and access to any junior they can develop (at a fair market value)

Just need to fix the points curve and make teams pay a premium for matching talent

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

Just remove academies altogether. Make the draft as open and uncompromised as it used to be.

We had 5 non-VIC premiers in the 2000s including 3 all interstate grand finals.

The issue with removing academies is the talent pool and development pathways become very incestious.

Draft and Academies are ideologically opposed systems.

The academy system encourages clubs to invest more in the growth of the game and grassroots talent development which helps keep the game healthy

Vs Draft which is just teams fighting over a limited largely Victorian based development infrastructure.

This system is better for all as it will help grow the game

AFL can still run the academies and fund them? Don’t they sort of all ready do with the equalised distribution?

If you’re going open draft and not compromised. Father son goes too

Why is it up to the clubs to invest into grassroots talent?

In an ideal world the AFL should be pumping money into grassroots footy (they aren't). The solution is simple. Unfortunately the custodians of our game have continuously shown they are incompetent.

Academies for all creates a system of haves and have nots. It will be the beginning of an EPL like league of clubs with financial dominance lording over the smaller clubs.

Come on now that silly. EPL doesn’t have a salary cap.

In the current AFL $13m should represent about 12 wins. (That’s the cap number) if you have teams spending 5M vs teams spending 30M you’d expect just based on pure numbers for the more expensive team to do better but the salary cap doesn’t allow for that.

If you develop too many good players you can’t afford to keep them. They leave and balance is restored

That really depends on how they rebalance the points matching system and if they include NGAs under the soft cap.

EPL doesn’t have a salary cap

Hahahahahaha

anyone who thinks this is a good idea, I hope you aren’t at the bottom when Tassie joins. First round will go to pick 45!!!
My preference was always for top 10 to be off limits or some kind of scaling access on where you finish but as long as the points system is drastically tightened and clubs have to pay fair value for players, it shouldnt matter.

If the only way for Essendon to match a bid on Kako is to effectively have a pick close to where he's bid on, then the picks come in and out pretty quickly. It all depends on much they manage to fix the points system

Not if you have to pay market rates.

Its the double dipping and using junk picks to land premium players that causes the inequeity.

Pay market rates and the salary cap is getting as close to fair as it can get.

How convenient. Just in time for a big Victorian team to benefit.
Get stuffed. Listen to this, dogs get kissed with Ugle-Hagan and Collingwood with Quaynor so the AFL change the rules before the dees can get their academy player in Mac Andrew only for the afl to change the rules back again after melbourne has already missed out. What a pathetic league.

Who missed out in those years (genuine Q).

Mac Andrew to Melbourne
Cam MacKenzie to Saints?
??

Ryley Sanders (North)

It also effectively means you can’t recruit aboriginal footballers in the open draft unless a team passes on them.

Every single aboriginal footballer out of WA and SA will come with matching rights.

Lance Franklin, Paddy Ryder, Izak Rankine etc etc

An unbelievably bad decision that already had a major imbalance on the comp for the very short years it was in place.

Right… on what basis?

Certainly looks like his name 6 years ago.

well this
saying he was in the NGA from 12 is like saying every Sandy Dragon that trains with StKilda is a part of our NGA.
The only thing that counts is that the AFl acknowledges it and that didn't happen until a month before the draft.

You are way off the mark with this.

They didn’t acknowledge his aboriginal status.

Something that had been submitted to them for over a year beforehand and had been recognized with Melbourne Grammar for 3 years.
