So basically:

NGA back to bid matching at any point

Discount for F/S drops from 20% to 10%

Change in scale of points from 1-54 from next year (no points after 54)

Trading of future picks up to 2 years in advance from next year

Mid season picks can be traded from 2026

Free agent compo will take into account contract length (up to 5 years)

It's not fully clear from the video or article but they are just reducing discount and removing points after 54 right...

Like there's other changes to the value per pick?

It will scale from 3000 for #1 to 14 points for #54.
More than 10000 points taken out of the pool, but they haven't announced the actual points yet.

Oh yeah, I didn't think about what specifically 54 is worth now, which is 220 points. That does make it sound like it will be harder to match

The Dees having Mac Andrew ripped away from us will be my asterisk on our poor performances for the next 10-15 years. No club has been disadvantaged more. Pathetic AFL. Can't wait til Kane gets the boot. Why the hell is there even a discount for a father/son. She's lost the bloody plot.

Pretty sure the drop in the discount is a change from next year as well so the 20% discount still applies for this draft

You couldn’t come up with anything more stupid then having discounts as a %

Not sure you can blame Kane for you missing out on Mac Andrew, she wasn't working for the AFL when they changed the NGA rules.

The discount is necessary to be able to match a bid with a later pick.

Yep correct.

For 2025, the main changes will be:

  • The revised draft value index and bidding system will be introduced. The new DVI will make it harder for clubs to stockpile draft selections to match multiple bids on Academy and father-son selections.
  • As part of this, the 20 per cent points discount applied to matched bids will be reduced to 10 per cent. However, the AFL will continue to review this and assess whether it should apply to all or some of father-son, NGA and northern Academy players.
  • The new DVI will see points attached to only the first 54 picks (down from the current system of the first 73 picks). There will be more than 10,000 points shaved off the value of the next DVI.
  • Future trading of picks will be extended to two years in advance.

Kane should publicly apologise or something though. it's a decision that can impact us for 10-15 years.

No, the discount isn't necessary. It's all based on points so they can match with multiple picks. Clubs should be paying 'overs' for the luxury of having access to father-sons, certainly not a discount. It's a bloody joke.

Would an apology make you feel better?

Paying overs? Why?
The AFL wants there to be an incentive for clubs to develop academy/nga/ FS players.
Without a discount, you can't match a bid with the very next pick, because it's worth less. And you wouldn't be able to match a bid made late in the 3rd round.

If it wasn't Essendon getting an advantage this year do you think the NGA matching would be changing this year?

This year's changes are all around appeasing the noisy ones i.e Victorian clubs.

The first one is obviously benefiting Essendon. The last one is focused only on father son and not on academy or any other stream. It's clear whom AFL are trying to shut up.

For 2024, the main changes will be:

  • Clubs having access from pick No.1 onwards for NGA prospects in a return to previous rules to align with northern Academy and the father-son bidding system. The AFL has prioritised this change, revealed by AFL.com.au last month, because it does not want to further see a decline in diverse and Indigenous talent.
  • The AFL will also continue to run its review on changing the NGA zones ahead of Tasmania's entrance into the game and the required eligibility and sign-up process for NGA draftees.
  • Free agency compensation picks will from now take into account contract length as a determining factor, however contracts less than two years, or more than five, will not be given any weight. The League will be more transparent with its free agency compensation formula using the year lengths of deals.
  • Clubs will be able to retain rookies for up to a maximum of five years, up from the current three years. This is to help give clubs more time to develop key position and taller talents as well as players from different backgrounds. Stipulations will mean the player cannot have played more than 10 games at the end of his fourth or fifth season to retain rookie status.
  • More flexibility in the drafting of father-son prospects as primary-listed players or rookie-listed players. Current rules mean clubs have to nominate before the national draft if a player will be a national or rookie father-son, with the tweak giving more scope to make decisions during the live draft.

My favourite bit was when she said that overhauling the points system to make it harder to match bids allows for a change in the NGA matching.

If that’s the case, why aren’t both rules changing at the same time? Bizarre really.

Even when they make changes that I overall agree with I don’t like their execution
