Ive been on record saying that a big turning point in Melbourne from yesteryear was the acquisitions of guys like Jordan Lewis and Daniel Cross. Great club man who sets examples not just the talented kids but holds the older heads accountable as well as leading the kids.
that was more to undo the damage done from trading out their experience and heaping leadership on Scully and Trengove.

we have different issues. we lack competitors.
Melbourne are either only drafting competitors (not a Watts/gysberts/scully/morton on that list now), or they're developing them. but given guys like Rivers, Jackson, Kosi, Bowey, Sparrow and Spargo are coming in and proving themselves in the best system in the league, i think it's the former

if i could take any two players, i'd go Brayshaw and Dunkley. both from strong systems with flag experience.
And both have years on their side to lead our group.

no idea the cost, but likely cheaper than going after a Green or Taranto.

No big name recruits again this year. Jack Bytel/Ely Smith/Xavier O'Halloran/Riley Collier-Dawkins/Rhylee West on the cheap and someone like Connor Blakely or Callan Ward as a free agent. I'm not counting Ward in his twilight as a big name. Get some actual depth in the middle so we can actually drop blokes to send a message without having to bring in a small forward to play as a midfielder.

If Hepp and Hurls go you offer Angus Brayshaw the big coin he won't get at Melbourne

I think we need both.
We dont seem able/lucky enough at the draft to get the mids we need.
Not often there are 3 top shelf options and we have the coin.

2 of Dunkley, taranto, Brayshaw fills major holes in our side
2 of smith, bytel, rcd, o'halloran etc builds the depth we sorely lack.

We're 2 years into a rebuild. We don't need to go out and spend cash, and more importantly draft capital, on Dunkley or Taranto.

If we attract Ely Smith it'll cost us a F3 or F4 at worst and if we nab Ward or Blakely it'll literally cost us no draft capital. From there we draft an inside midfielder like Tsatas, Wardlaw or Hewett. Lo and behold, that adds 50% more inside midfielders on our list, and actual proper depth. Getting a big name means we haven't learned our lesson.

Taranto and dunkley are still young.
They fit the profile of our demographic.
Are proven and come from systems that have made GFs in the last few years.

If its a 2x 1sts type deal, you walk away. But i imagine this is more a cerra type deal where a sharp pick gets you the player.

Id have no qualms giving up a top 5 pick for either and a future for the other.
Primarily because we have no history drafting and developing the type of player we need that recent premiers all boast.

We are a chance at the current rate to finish low enough that one falls into our lap.

Smith is a no for me. We have to stop with permanent injury cases. It's hurt us a lot in the past.

Both will cost more than one first. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

My way gets the depth whilst spending pretty much zero draft capital.

That last statement is meaningless. Melbourne had no history of doing it until last year. Richmond the same up until 2017. Bulldogs did for 2008/09 but between then and 2016 had no history either.

That's fair. Smith was an example, I wouldn't care if it were any of the guys I mentioned.

Depending on cost I'd be taking a good look at Mitch Lewis. The big forward we are lacking, has had 50 games of development.
He's gonna cost a first IMO. And in any case, most likely he'll re-sign for 2 and be a FA in 2024.

Angus Brayshaw 5 years at whatever the **** he likes as the Dees don't have the coin to match

Ward would be ideal.

Zero chance the Hawks give him up.

any soon-to-retire veterans we can nab to bring some composure/experience/leadership to a line for a couple years while our youngsters develop? (eg. Hodge to Brisbane)

If we had pick 4/5 and Taranto nominates us, why would we need to offer more than that pick? He's uncontracted yeah? GWS wouldn't turn that down if it's our final offer.

I would offer our future 1st as well and keep our 1st this year, stuff them.

we should test that out.
I thought Cerra would be more than a first.
If GWS accept a first for Taranto because a) they can't afford to keep him and b) it's the best they're gonna get, happy days.

On Taranto and co. it's less about depth and more about gaps in our midfield.
1-2 of Brayshaw, Taranto, dunkley
1-2 of Ward, Blakely

Add 3 mids because we are seriously shallow there.
Half hoping we're in the mix for McStay too.
