Someone like Geelong surely would be keeping a close eye.

Maybe it's best for both parties if Shiel moves on. At his age you wouldn't think we'd be competing while he's still around anyway.

However, I'm not sure he should be singled out in the midfield. I think they all should be held to the same standards.

This is the same gibberish that news.com.au published a version of (quoted in the Shiel thread)... it all comes back to Tom Browne talking out of his arse on a radio show.

They seem to have forgotten that the uninformed opinions of a TV sports presenter (not a journalist) are not news. Snappy headline though.

We need to see what Hobbs, Caldwell, McGrath and Perkins can do there this year before we answer that question

We need to determine whether Stringer can play the same role he did for the last 10 weeks of 2021 or is he never gonna get his body to that level again

We need to see if Shiel, Zerrett and Parish will start defending

No AFL club would not take a mid in the offseason

I dont see much point in having a tonne of midfielders and then not much else

Small forwards, half backs, key backs and even key fwds a greater concern

Why have Shiel, Zerrett, Parish, Stringer, Mcgrath, Perkins, Hobbs, Caldwell on the list when they already cant fit

Do we just give up on Shiel? Play Perkins and Stringer out of cbas, Mcgrath half back and give up on him as a mid?
Bro you were literally saying in the pre-season we didn't have any mids for the VFL and people would be shitty about it.

Now we have to many?

Did you think Freo would be 2nd before this year after 7 rounds

Likewise Stkilda 5-1 after round 1?

There is no point giving up a 29 yr old Shiel on alot of money unless your batling with salary cap (clearly we arent) or getting some way overs in trade capital which wont happen at this point.

Give Shiel and this group a chance to respond next year, it cant hinder at all by keeping him. Hes not toxic in an off field sense and he has great training attitudes apparently.

He and the group have talent. They just need to buy in defensivily and i feel that greatly comes down to mental/effort application

Richmond if they finish top 8 would be the one. Their midfield sucks quite frankly and we should be convincing them that he's the guy for one last shot.

Agree with this. The effort players are rising to the top (Snelling and Geulfi) which was totally predictable under this system- but it's not them where the improvement needs to come from it's accross the board.

We can't simply say we are no good because we don't have our 'hard work' players playing. Them out only proves how big the work-rate problem is with the majority.

This is the test for the coaches and also the recruiting department as we will need some gone who won't and more in who will.
agree. its team defence these days. having a few super hard working defenders means nothing if others aren't playing their role in the zone. it only takes one or two to be lagging and suddenly overlap is created and teams shred us.

it's all or nothing.. which just reinforces how implausible the notion that snelling and langford would fix our defence is

Yeah. Not sure the musings of reporters really count as news as you say. I do not doubt there would be clubs watching. Clubs are always watching. I have changed my view a little. I thought we could get away with having the "similar crew" but it is not really working but in saying that I am not desperate to trade him out. If he wants to go and someone else is willing to offer something reasonable (second round) and even if we have to pay some of his wage (not $250k plus like the Pies ) then so be it. If he wants to stay then so be it but it must be on the condition you buy in 100% and you run out and give 100% every week even if a few around are not. No more doing your own thing because everyone else is. He is the scape goat for sure but I have to say that even though I understand why he has thrown his arms up a couple of times and gone with I am not going to bother I am not on board with it.

You really believe we are short on midfield depth still?
We have no injuries to our midfield at the moment and we have Brayden Ham running around as our first choice mid in the VFL, who is zero chance of playing there in the AFL.

The best teams have competition for spots, particularly in the midfield where if you dont do the team things you don't play. Guys like Neal-Bullen and Dunstan would gnaw their foot off to get into the team and the guys playing seniors know it.

Shiel, Parish and Caldwell can run around and not defend because they have no pressure coming from underneath to challenge their spot.
just none of them are any good at the moment.
Yeah... please see above.
How many do melbourne have?

Name our 6 and theres?
You are missing the point. It's not about the first 6, it's about who is after that.

Melb: Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes, Jordan
Ess: Zerrett, Parish, Shiel, Caldwell, McGrath, Hobbs

Next 3?
Melb: Dunstan, Neal-Bullen, Sparrow,
Ess: .........Ham, Perkins and Guelfi maybe?

If you dont perform to team standards at Melbourne then you dont play midfield. Our players don't have that threat of being replaced and so they free wheel.

It's not about having mids run around in the VFL for the sake of it. It's about the reality that competition for spots drives better performance. And at the moment, there is no one at VFL level who is remotely close to threatening our mids into doing what they need to.

Melbourne have more.

We have McGrath, Parish, Caldwell, Merrett (very iffy), Hobbs and Shiel
They have Harmes, Sparrow, Dunstan, Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Moniz-Wakefield and when push comes to shove, Brayshaw.
As for their main challenge in Brisbane, they have Rayner, Smith, Berry, CEY, Robertson, Lyons, Mathieson and Neale

We're well short of where we need to be

We've got plenty of cap space to pursue some mature leaders. Mundy as a coach would be very appealing, hugely underrated.

I'm intrigued to see what we do, the last two off-seasons have netted Wright + Hind and Jake Kelly who've all been astute choices.
owen87 I have quoted you over here, as it is probably a better fit.

I like the idea of Mundy or using the cap space to get someone better than a role player. ant555 had a great post earlier on, outlining the different types of box based defences. Such conversations are above my BigFooty paygrade.

If I were Rutten, I'd look at who was gettable from a system most similar to the one I was trying to implement. I remember Ross Lyon took Zac Dawson to Fremantle so that he could speed up the learnings. Perhaps we have tried this to some (small) extent by the Richmond players that have moved over.

Midfield depth is our least concern

Shiel
Parish
Zerrett
Mcgrath
Stringer
Hobbs
Caldwell
Perkins
Langford
Snelling
Heppell

Its as good as any of melbournea depth. We agree to disagree

If we have a few of Tippa, HJ, Snelling, Francis up and running then our midfield in the vfl is more likely to have a Hobbs and others in it

Stretching it very quickly. It falls away quickly after that top 5 (remove Hobbs who is not yet ready to consistently play midfield)

17th for CP difference and 15th for clearance difference says otherwise. Melbourne's depth smashed ours a month ago. You're absolutely crazy to think our midfield bats deep. It's easily the weakest area on our depth chart

Top end Quality and depth are far different

If your arguing that we need to replace at top end, one way runners who are only motivated extrinsically for hard nosed contested beast that go both ways and tackle then i agree with you

Thats where we need to test Perkins, Hobbs, McGrath and Caldwell and see if they offer more than Zerrett and Parish medium term

If I could turn Dylan Shiel into Elliot Yeo I would.
