Midfield depth is our least concern

Shiel
Parish
Zerrett
Mcgrath
Stringer
Hobbs
Caldwell
Perkins
Langford
Snelling
Heppell

Its as good as any of melbournea depth. We agree to disagree

If we have a few of Tippa, HJ, Snelling, Francis up and running then our midfield in the vfl is more likely to have a Hobbs and others in it
If you honestly think we have an equivalent depth in quality of midfielders to Melbourne, the Bulldogs and Brisbane, then yeah we are going to have to agree to disagree - because that is ridiculous.

I’d be cleaning out the list this off season. Go hard at the draft without selling the future, and look for value recruits from rival clubs who can provide depth and upside.

We currently have pick 3, 21, 39 and 57. Id start by trading Francis for what ever we can get, will be handy points. Shiel to who ever for a decent second rounder with us paying a portion of his contract.

Trading up in the draft to acquire another first round pick without trading any future picks. Looking at value players aka Ely Smith, Xavier O’Hallaran, Ben Ronke and possibly McStay as a free agent.

Getting the Davey Twins in, as well as a Elite young key forward and a dual position midfielder.

Big no to mcstay on the contract level he’s been offered.if Bailey Laurie can’t break into Melbournes side, he’s one we should look at as a smart small forward.

Padding out the midfield, especially into the VFL should almost be our priority.

Richmond if they finish top 8 would be the one. Their midfield sucks quite frankly and we should be convincing them that he's the guy for one last shot.
I agree that Richmond’s midfield sucks, however, even if Richmond thought they could have another crack why on earth would they take this spud off your hands. Unfortunately for the bombers he’s turned out to be a dud and you just have to wear the cost of it. Richmond were offered Mitchell from Hawthorn and others who have been better than Dylan Shiel and we wouldn’t even take those. Sometimes trades don’t work and that’s the reality. You’re dreaming that a club will give you something of value for him and the likely outcome is that should he go to another club, you’d have to pay half his salary.

I really thought Dylan Shiel would have been a very good player for Essendon. Shit happens.

He's not a dud. It's a failed trade, no doubt. Dud's are blokes who've never been AFL standard.

Okay Shiel is a dud trade. Not a dud player. But do you really think another club will take him off your hands? High priced player that’s not delivering. I doubt anyone would want him unless Essendon was willing to pay a huge part of his salary and even then you’d get virtually nothing back. You’ll just have to pray if you come good as a team he may also improve his output. Richmond will look to inject youth into their midfield, not an older struggling midfielder. We already have some of them.

I think most club's are smarter than those on BF. So yes. Bye now

Can't help and look at how Sydney have managed Mills - let him play and develop as the assured HBF, a natural extension of his skills as a junior, and once he has the experience and confidence under his belt, move him into the midfield as essentially a finished, all-round product, where he is now starring. I wonder how things might be if we'd let McGrath continue his promising trajectory in the backline before trying to shoe-horn him into the midfield "because no.1 pick"

Not for nothing, he was also looking like our most promising lock-down small defender for a while there, in addition to his dynamism and speed on the rebound.

Mills was a genuine on-baller at U18 level, never a query about him playing elsewhere;

A gifted and talented on-baller who is arguably the draft’s most complete midfielder. Is a strong overhead mark, a reliable kick for goal, hard, tough and deceptively quick. Loves to use the ball by foot and is a punishing tackler. Has been sidelined with injury for most of the year.

3. Sydney (assumed bid) - Callum Mills (NSW/ACT - SYDNEY ACADEMY – MID)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 04/02/1997
Recruited from: Sydney Swans
Range: 1st round
Profile: High production inside midfielder.

Mills put his runs on the board last year as a bottom-aged prospect, when he starred for New South Wales-ACT at the under-18 championships and was rewarded with selection in the All Australian team.

The midfielder is strong and tough, aggressive at the contest and a super overhead mark. For a midfielder, he's a great size, too (188cm and 86kg). He likes to float forward and hit the scoreboard, but he does his best work in the midfield when he can set up the game and control it.

He is also ultra-competitive. Last year he spent some time training with the Swans' senior team, and was part of a drill where the players were instructed not to tackle. But Mills, who was matched up against Sydney co-captain Jarrad McVeigh, couldn't resist, and dumped McVeigh to the ground, much to the premiership player's chagrin.

But it said something about Mills' qualities: he is hell-bent on winning and is ready to match up against senior opposition. Last year he gathered 40 disposals in a NEAFL game for the Swans reserves team as a 17-year-old.

You really off him compared to our other main 3 mids? Why so?
Where did I say I’m off him? I just think he’s not worth the money he would already be on, and the pay increase his manager will be going after for his next year extension (his current contract is around 700). First 1-2 extensions as a top 10 pick (especially pick 1) you pay for potential progression not just out put. If he is what he is now by the end of the season he’ll be 6 years in and you’d say this is probably what he’s going to be. I don’t think anyone else would be close to offering what he would already be on/ what the club will likely offer for his next 2 years.

The problem isn’t Shiel as much as it’s our list. Shiel doesn’t suit us because our starting mids are Parish and Merrett. He’s at his best as a first possession player. We can’t carry him and Parish in the same role.

For another club he’d provide much better value. Not sure that club is Richmond but he’d be good for Geelong where they get good value out of hybrid mids. He also needs strong leaders to pull his head and keep him focused when he needs it. Something we don’t have.

Shiel has been very unlucky that we have had the rise of Parish which I don't think anyone in the club really saw would happen.
He is also unlucky that Parish seems to escape the attention for being just as much of a down hill skier.

Half back. One where he can use his defensive skills, change of direction and overlap run. Or, we could change his role weekly like we have been doing and hope for the best 🤞
I personally dont see that the issue. Its very much personnel dependant. The issue we have is we are such a basket case you cant switch one players role week to week, whereas other teams are doing it fine that are top of the ladder

I dont think we can have Z.Merrett attending 77% cbas anymore. Needs to find a new role until he can defensively transition, tackle and not short step.

Parish probably similar, just not sure he can actually play too much else and i think you can get away with one but not the entire midfield.

Dont we need defensive skills in the middle right now? It wont matter whos back 6 if the ball is coming down willy nilly

He's supposed to split midfield time with McGrath rotating to half-back, but McGrath had to do all the work while Merrett and Stringer were both injured and has had jobs in defence the last week or two, so now it's Merrett's turn to pick up the slack. Usually they're more evenly split.
