Is James Worpel any good or has he gone backwards?

Gone backwards? Not at all.

Mitchell is smart and realises it's a team sport. He's not ignoring team imbalance and realises that he can't play Mitchell, JOM and Worpel together as ball hunters. He wants Newcombe as the battering ram. Ward adds significant running power.

It's harsh on a BnF winner but them's the breaks.

The Hawk I'd like is Maginness. Massive engine, 5:50 2km time trial, at 188cm and carrying a lot of (good) weight. Can rack up the possessions or be polished into a defensive mid who can play inside and on a wing - he ran with Langdon and beat him comprehensively.

He could be the young George Hewett we need.

not sure he's the midfield answer, but is he a defensive HFF option?
1-goes in hard, tackles hard, runs hard
2-has the go in low, lift the arm technique in his bag of tricks
3-kicking less an issue if his game is to run, chase, tackle and hack the ball forward if not winning a free.

Low down the list of preferences, but not a complete dismissal in my book
kind of sounds like Guelfi to me, not sure the Beast Mode would bring all that much different as a defensive HFF

We desperately need skilled half forward flankers.
We are missing that conduit between the midfield and forward line.
Snelling coming 3rd in the the bnf has shown us how important he's been. And when he's injured that's the main area we've been falling down.
But we need another 1 or 2 of those types.

Who could we target?

Maginness has shown no ability to win the ball yet at senior level, has been given bit part roles at most. Worpel has definitely gone backwards since his bnf year no other ways to look at it, regardless of midfield mix.

Maginness does it at the lower level. That clearly converts.

Worpel is being asked to play different roles. He hasn't lost the ability to accumulate and it is not like anyone tags.

Remember his best year was 2019. The 2018 Brownlow medallist broke his leg and Worpel got those minutes. He hasn't gotten them since and his form has declined.

Not always, there are plenty of players who have been able to rack it up in the vfl but can’t find the footy at afl.
Worpel has been given plenty of minutes over the past couple of seasons, he’s just plateau’d. There’s a reason Newcombe has taken his spot, because he offers more when he’s in the middle, while worpel was running around getting 15-20 ineffective touches.

He’s done it once at the lower level, off a wing against North. Broke 20 touches once from 6 games last year. Has the work rate but a horrible kick and decision maker.

Yeah, I don't get the Mathieson hate to be honest, especially from a culture perspective

A few points from the below article.

  • Ran waters for the reserves
  • Hosts team dinners
  • Bought his parents a house up in brisbane

Doesn't strike me as a loose unit/culture problem child to me. Fair enough that he's not an elite mid, but if we had a few harder nosed players with a desire to build culture and be a team player maybe we wouldn't be such a shambles.

You won’t find a single Essendon player that is as emotionally invested as much in his club as Mathieson is in Brisbane. Was shattered when they got eliminated in last years finals series and he wasn’t even playing. I don’t necessarily think we should be targeting him, but would love his passion in some of our players.

Dangerous assumption.

What does the list of second tier ball magnets who got the minutes and didn't get the ball at AFL level even look like?

That's O'Brien playing middle in 2015 not Hibberd playing wing in 2020.

NOB’s last 6 games for the club included 2 games over 30 touches and the rest 20 and above I think. Issue wasn’t that he couldn’t find pill at all.

Interesting that we are burning both ends of the candle at once here, on one hand is Mathieson who is ready made, plug and play, on the other we have Maginness who is all raw tools but we’d actually need to develop him into something and that’s not something we have demonstrated we can do.

Bit of a piss or get off the pot situation, isn’t it. Is there a point in trading in a player if he’s not a known commodity?

Trading in guys like Mathieson &/or Maginness isn't just about the AFL side imho. Needing to pad out the VFL system needs to be addressed as well. We are so desperate to compete in the engine room at the lower level we have consistently seen guys like Ham attend centre bounces at the level.
