Kelly only turned 29 last week. Think he’s got a few more in him - doesn’t hurt that the coach loves him either
Had a lot of concussions though

So what we looking at for the next offseason?

Retire: Heppell and Goldstein
Trade: Shiel to Melbourne for #31
Delist: Hunter, Wanganeen and Kelly
Free Agent - Oleg Markov

Draft:
#8, #28, #31, #RD1 and #RD2 - Five picks. Need to make sure we draft another midfielder and ruckman in this group and the other three picks can be best available.
Draper enter free agency in '25 and Bryan is OOC, with a likely midseason trade period that year too, and the best ruck in the league is out of contract this year and a free agent

Assuming goldy retires, how much both our rucks do this year could make things interesting

Target English
Give bryan and draper 6m in '25 in take the #2 spot then raffle the other mid season?

And yes, the heat is getting to me today

A star ruckman has pretty much never been a pre-requisite to winning a Premiership, I wouldn't bother spending the cash it would take to target English when a combination of Draper and Bryan should be at least 'good enough'.

The only reason to target a star ruckman is if they can consistently kick 25+ goals a year, and they don't exist at the moment.

i'd argue Gawn, and even Jackson, were major contributors to the Dees' 2021 season and flag.

and English would be about having that additional midfielder type as your ruck
pricey yes, but a considerable upgrade on what we have, and wouldnt cost trade collateral....which we'd gain from moving Bryan/Draper on.

all moot as i don't imagine we'd be remotely interested. but it's feb not sept

if you pick/develop an elite ruck then you absolutely build around them, but if you’ve already got a reasonably solid ruck setup you’re likely better off investing that capital in a different position

It would be correct to say Gawn and Jackson had a big impact. But then you have the Pies last year. Geelong. Richmond. None played star rucks. So 1 out of the last 4 have won with a great ruck combo and the rest with just good to okay rucks. The Eagles won without Nic Nat and had Lycett and Vardy.
I think English goes back to WA if he leaves the Dogs. We would be better off chasing a KPF or genuine super star midfielder IMO. Our ruck division looks pretty solid right now for mine. Bryan looks like he has improved over summer based on what I have seen in them match sims. Draper is Draper and young Vigo looks like he has something to work with. If one of the other forwards stand up we also have Wright who is actually pretty decent in the ruck.

i look at it like this...and ill reiterate this is playing with a less than serious idea.

English via RFA will cost $$ (he'd cost them anyway), but we keep our picks.
Draper becomes a pre-agent as such. or he doesn't and we spend a year with him as #2 ruck/#2 fwd - it works, great. it doesn't, and we can bank the compensation or the pick.

$$ get us English + what you'd assume is a band 1 pick a year later, or a 1st rd pick a year prior

should add that i view English as more than just a ruck upgrade. i think he becomes eq. best player with Merrett in our side.

I think like our midfield its ok without being great.
Bryan and Vigo are where they should be, but neither are proven at AFL level. Draper for mine does some good (and it's fun to watch at times), but also a lot wrong.
English gives you an elite ruck to pair with 2 elite mids in their prime.

Plus, get an additional 1st rd pick for Draper (e.g), we can go gun key fwd/mid hunting ;)

How many premiers in the last 10 years had great rucks again ? 1/10

If Draper is worth a 1st round pick then why are we not keeping him ?

Only the AFL would make a significant rule change this late into the season (planning). Genuinely dunbfounded it got down the path as far as it did as long as it did
I suspect the AFLPA put the handbrake on it for this year.

Already voiced my opinion and hope it never comes to fruition, will ruin the H&A season and make it a circus.
Get ready for the circus then as it is coming in 2025. AFLPA is on board .

Sydney already turned it into a circus when they hired acrobats to climb the posts during the game...

Ah yes, Cirque du Soleil - Rampe sur le poteau, one of their best shows.

In practice it will probably destroy competiveness and create a big top vs bottom devide
Disagree, North wouldn't be fussed if they finished 15th instead of 17th by winning some dead rubber games if they know they can purchase some good draft picks at the end of the season.

The good teams are the good teams, Collingwood purchasing some cap space doesn't affect North and other low clubs, Pies are already better than them, It really only affects the other top clubs who will also start looking at buying picks to improve.

Right now if you finish last 3 years in a row you'll get 6 draft picks inside 20, with purchasing then add some smart trading and you could probably turn that into 9-12 without huge effort.

The point is north

is blatantly tanking, games aren’t that fun and a mid season trade period if not sorted could lead to 5-6 teams being like north/west coast and just giving up on the season.
