Id say Hobbs is as tough as Caldwell

Id like to see Hobbs return from injury with full time mid in VFL and go from there based on team result and individual form/injury

I was sure of Hobbs early in his career but have started to doubt that a bit lately

I hope he can get enough games next year where he wants to stay in a building side

Id say long term as we cant carry too many mids. I think him and Caldwell will need to share one starting onball spot and high half fwd entering the front of stoppages

Not sure if its injury and not continuity but Hobbs is starting to look quite slow for a CBA mid, that doesnt mean he cant work and i feel like his first 1-3 step and agility step is still quite good

See I agree with this I just think neither are good forwards and should share a HB spot so we could play a decent forward there instead

Half backs you really want are guys that can cover the ground and get metres gained and penetrating kick,.... oh and defend be nice. In a very simplistic view, so good athletes

Hobbs is a poor runner, solid short kick but lacks penetration

Caldwell not great, not terrible but his game is contest like Hobbs, he has great score involvments for many years now. Also lacks peneteration

Zac Merrett or Durham would be the ones if you drew a long bow to take someone out of the midfield to half back

Who knows, youd want to be asking the question though

Hes played 1 full game since round 4 this year and thats without Mills and Parker available

Definitely not against it, just think it’d be hard to pry him out of his home state

Would we even be able to give him more opportunity? Who does he come in for?

Yeah, Caldwell's draft notes disagree. He has very good goal sense.

Then why doesn’t he kick goals? He’s played about 50 games the last 3 seasons.

This year he has 3 goals. Which is low for a mid. last year 11 mostly as a HF the year before 6.

For a decent HHF you’d expect 17-23 goals a year. More for the elite guys.

HB is the easiest position to play in the AFL. Many older players and failed forwards end up there for a reason. Most teams have a kicker hierarchy with teams trying to get the ball to their good users.

Caldwell is good enough to be a designated kicker and a real weapon. Hobbs, not so much but he’s got good hands, is strong at the contest and good enough to get it to the designated kicker.

I think (hope) they will go hard on the FA that fill a need, are available, and are of quality.

Crumming skilful forward: Stengle 800 x 5
Half Back Distributor: Perryman 800 x 5

It's a pity the contested marking CHF pantry is empty

Agree - we’ve been hearing all about the ‘war chest’ for years now. McKay a great start, time to add to it.

Yep so find someone else that isnt contributing in the front half of the ground that has the attributes i suggested

I dont think Martin is as big as a debacle across half back as people are suggesting. Its the right spot for now

Why are we changing a side in the top 3 atm?

If we’re being technical were 4th and 1.5 games (6 points) above 12th and won’t have won in almost 4 weeks when our game vs the eagles starts.

Sounds like a side that could use tweaking/optimising.

I think Martin has been good as a HB. No complaints It’s just he’s great as a wing and by not playing him there there’s opportunity cost. Same as playing Langford outside of the forward line.

As far as finding players with those attributes. They don’t currently exist in the team. Potentially Dursma could play there but you have the same dilemma as with Martin in that he’s good playing both forward and back.

As guys come back there’s going to be some real selection pressure which should hopefully lead to a better functioning team.

I'd say he's been asked to focus on the defensive side of his game which is paying off in spades.
A lot of supporters whinge about the quality of our forward entries; without looking at stats I'd guess that he's one of our most efficient going i50. I wonder how many assists or score involvements he's had as well.

Certainly, he's more reliable than Hobbs in this regard, and has kicked more goals than he has locked down on small defenders. The thing about Hobbs is he could get the ball to an i50 kicker - Merrett or Martin, or if he's there Perkins - but you'd count on him more to do that by hand than by foot. I wouldn't count on him nailing his kick inside fifty, unlike Caldwell.

I guess I'm at a point where I'm happy with the team as it is - if Martin remains at hb for the rest of the season I'm not going to be too upset about it though I'd like to see him on a wing again. I'm willing to accept the deficiencies and trust that we'll trade or draft to fix it, as our last period makes much more sense than previous ones.

Here are Campbells highlights from last year. This year he's being played of hb, when he gets a game.

...and these are from his draft year. Bringing in Campbell would be like the Blues bringing in Cerra to play alongside Walsh.

So what he is brining us ?
Elite disposal yes.
Another 180cm midfielder who rates average in most other areas other than he is a good mark for his size.
Love his kicking skills but where are we playing him ?

I'd move Martin back to the wing and play Campbell on a hb/mid rotation.

Ideally he's ready to take over Merrett's role at a pinch or when Merrett retires, or even swap roles.

It's like Pokémon, you've gotta collect 'em all.

I would rather find a 188cm version that kicks and marks as well.

Sydney fans don’t want to play Campbell because they say he gets absolutely lost defensively.

Has good skills - but would we basically be recruiting a D’ambrosio based off that?
