I see the high scoring directive has worked really well so far in the GWS v Carlton match :$
Did absolutely throw it down for a while.

Carlton would have scored a couple more if Tayla "Kurt Tippett" Harris knew she had team mates to pass to

It’s not the game style or the rules, it’s the quality of players and nothing will change that for a long time.

This will drop in interest, it’s inevitable as the novelty wears off. Only the diehards will watch games with such poor skill. It’s just a matter whether it can survive until the skills improve.

It's one of the problem with our game - such huge teams. Soccer needs only 11, cricket the same, basketball just 5. But 16 players with 4 on the bench? Compare with soccer - 8 teams of 20 versus 8 of 14 is 48 extra players the AFL needs to have running around each week.

That is a lot of people you need to be good. The 32 best in the league would put on a pretty highly skilled game, but the depth is just not there yet - which is why not having Phillips is a killer for us - the elite players just stand out so much.

It's a bit like women's tennis back in the day - Martina, Evert, Steffi etc would steamroll through the round until they got to the quarter or semi and then the real tournament would begin - Evert and Graf won a slam 5 times without dropping a set, Martin and Serena have done it 6 times each. In such cases the lack of depth is hidden if the QF, SFs are good, but in a team sport, it is damn tough to hide.

Not sure what to do - I thought last nights game had some good patches - Carlton after the break wee very good.

My thoughts are that the comp is definitely not ready for more teams.

There's nothing really anyone can do, other than to give it some time and patience. In the wise words of a regular poster and one of my regular thread derailers "it's just a matter of whether it survives until the skills can improve".
[personally I think it will survive]

A lot of people I talk to reckon a smaller oval will help. I don't think so - it might increase it from 5 goals a game to 8, but the spectacle wouldn't improve.

It's all about the skills - both disposal and decision making. The game needs time and it's a matter of whether the viewing and paying public (it won't be free for much longer) are patient enough.

I had some interest last year. Next to none this year.

The game style doesnt suit the skill level. Coaches are choosing to go with congestion game plans to exploit the poor skill yet both sides have it. The spectacle is a disaster right now. No one is going to pay to watch it. The AFL cant keep it free forever. Also what happens when ratings die off and 7 chooses to walk away from showing games. The clubs have a duty to the game and right now they are being their worst enemy by being so negative in their approach.

I think if the game styles were "open" it'd be just as bad. No one can hit a target by foot and the decision making is so poor that the ball would be on the deck for 99% of the match and purely go back and forth. There's an argument that a more open game with isolated field positions would allow the more skillful players a chance to shine, but there aren't enough of them yet.

I think the size of the ground can certainly impact on scoring as I think teams increase their scoring opportunities. Getting it from one end to the other impacts on their scoring opportunities, so shrinking the size of the ground will increase those opportunities. Plus the AFLW girls don’t kick it as long as the boys. That’s not a criticism but a fact.

However to improve scoring long term, you aqre correct by improving players skills and decision making.

IMO; the 2 key things the AFL should do is, change the size of the ball, make the ball smaller. Take it friom a size 5 (or 4.5 I believe the AFLW use) and make it a size 3. This will allow for greater handle as traditionally girls have smaller hands and that will allow catching, marking and handball to improve.

And decrease the size of the ground, however if they decide to decrease the size of the ground I also think they will also need to change the number of players on the ground as with a smaller ground, congestion will still become an issue. If they keep 16 players on the ground, and reduce the size of the ground, congestion will increase and cancel out any scoring increase but by decreasing the amount of players on the ground, this will allow the more gifted athletes to showcase this skill by out running, dodging and taking players on with space on the outside.

I hope the girls win tonight.

State leagues use a 4.5 AFLW use a 4.
This causes issues itself as the correct ball drop in wind is trickier, bigger ball being a bit steadier.

That becomes a skill error. Something they should get used to.

State Leagues play in winter, the wind is more challenging. A skilled AFLW player shouldn’t have any trouble adapting.

And when Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki started playing tennis as small children they had a professional path to follow. But you hate the fact that any girls might now be able to have such a path to follow in the AFL - you think the quality of women's tennis reached the point it is now through magic?.

Nobody has argued that there shouldn’t be a grass roots junior program to ascertain if the interest and numbers are there to sustain this concept into the future. In fact that was one of the major counter-arguments against the inception of the AFLW. They’ve put the cart about 600 miles before the horse, and nobody even knows if the horse can walk yet.

Name me just one concept, sporting or otherwise, that is conceived by giving rank amateurs semi-professional funding and exposure. As I said in an earlier post, reality TV is just about the only thing I can think of that follows this formula. And that’s about as much credibility as this competition has.

It's always the case with people like you - you say "Oh look, I'm in favour of women being able to play sport professionally... when they're good enough", and then you ******* hate any single thing that will allow that to happen, so then you can say "Oh see, I told you, they're not good enough"..

Show me anywhere I’ve said girls shouldn’t have grass-roots opportunities to play football? You can’t.

You’re a frothed up, foaming-at-the-mouth virtue signaller who believes in equal outcome (not equal opportunity), even though history has shown unequivocally and repeatedly that the concept of equal outcome is a complete and utter failure.

You can’t even show me one slice of evidence that shows this concept has been a good idea. Look at all the objective evidence. People don’t pay to watch it. It generates next to no revenue. Ratings are way down. The AFL is so concerned about the spectacle they have to intervene to tell the coaches tactics are not allowed. What part of any of that tells you this is going well?

Just how brainwashed are you to not accept any of that evidence?

And remember what this is all about - this is a thread about cheering on women who play for the CROWS - the club you say you support, and yet you can't even do that - instead you chose to come on here and shit on them. Top work, champ.

Boo hoo. Paid-up members are entitled to express negative opinions about the club. If we all went along with everything they did we’d still be putting up with Trigg as the CEO.

That was a kick out of bounds? They've stuffed up that rule interpretation (of course). The SANFL have it right.

The one on the wing was the right call - no idea what we were thinking dribble kicking towards the boundary.

The Daisy shot at goal was touched by us, so a throw in

Having the AFLW is successfully improving grassroots women's football. Just because you don't like the product, doesn't mean the AFL hasn't succeeded in their goal of improving women's participation and expanding to new markets
