Courtney Gum coming out of retirement and nominating for the SA draft. I would sit her forward with squirts through the midfield. Great on field coach. Wonder if she will head that way like Krissie?

Gummo in the tricolours would be great.

Presumably she would only do this if she's already had discussions with us, right? We're the only SA club.

Either that or it's a case of "well I'm here now, may as well see what comes my way".

Clarkey apparently gave her a call and asked her to nominate. Very good move from the club with an outstanding player and a larger body around the midfield.

Certainly doesn't hurt to have an extra experienced player running around while we're in a premiership window! If nothing else, could be a bit of insurance in case Erin doesn't come back up. We don't run all that deep in the midfield beyond our starting players.

That being said, my memory was that she had gone a bit past it this year. Probably unfair since it's not like I watched much of GWS play. Did you see much of her, Nikki?

I remember seeing her on a couple of games, and she looked a solid player both in physique and ability. Probably not unlike the type of player like a Cramey. Certainly worth a punt considering 2 of our toughest midfielders are uncertainties at this stage, in Phillips and Scheer.

She had a solid ish year for the Giants, but they were lacking overall a bit from memory. Here's her page on the Giants with her 2019 stats https://www.gwsgiants.com.au/player-profile/courtney-gum
She finished 6th in their BnF on par with Jess da Pos.

If she's up at that level then she's a good get. Cramey getting hold of the ball was always a good thing.

Two articles stick in the mind this week. The article about Courtney Gum and thathe Crows were looking to draft 7 or 8 as one player is struggling with injury. I assume Chloe Scheer. That Gum was a given, contacted by Doc Clarke and would be a short term replacement for Hannah Martin. That they would draft 3-4 Under 18 and about 3 20 something. Today's Online Advertiser had nice words about the 4 Under 18 players, 10 year players in McKinnon, Tabb, Newman and Munyard. I assume all 4 will be drafted. I like the look of these two from the SANFLW Advertiser Team of the Year

Ruck Rover
Najwa Allen (Norwood FC) – VICE CAPTAIN

Took the competition by storm with her ability to influence the outcome of games with her strong play through the midfield and attack. Averaged more than 25 disposals per game while also kicking seven goals for the season.
Rover
Hannah Dunn (Norwood FC)

Like Allen, Dunn put her AFLW skills on show throughout the season to prove she could also find another opportunity at the top level after previously playing for GWS. Averaged more than 20 possessions a game for the Redlegs.

Women players pushing for more matches/proper season, AFL as usual just putting their head in the sand & refusing to acknowledge any AFLW issues, especially the 8 match season with 14 teams issue.

It's not just a few players I would think as the AFLPA is claiming. The AFLPA is not the right body to be voice for the AFLW players as they won't allow them to be part of their own Executive. If you represent all the players under the AFL umbrella, then you need representation for all of them on the Executive.

After that crowd this year, the AFL still can't get their head out of the sand and realise what this competition can bring to rejuvenate their brand.

Why can't the women have their own Players Association?

Why can't the women have their own Players Association?

Because the AFL don't want to spend money on it. Look at the social media around the first season, that was all done for gratis by someone who wanted to help out. Second season, they rightly wanted to be paid for all the work it takes. The AFL pushed it back in house and it was so poorly done in comparison. The AFL love to spruik their great idea/diversity/inclusion etc but will not do anything to really support it.

Any news on fixture release date or anything?

I want to pick up the womens championship membership for reserved seating at the games (venue permitting), but I will be away for 3 weekends, maybe 4 in February. If I miss 1 game, Ill commit. If I miss 2? The season better be extended. Because for $95 I want 3+ games!

Why can't the women have their own Players Association?
Because as internally conflicted as the AFLPA is, imagine what happens if it comes to a fight between the male AFLPA, and a female players association, over funds, most of which are generated by the male players. This is a fight the women lose every time.

Why they fell into the AFLPA continues to surprise me. The AFLPA will always be geared to support the best interests of the majority of its membership. They won’t go hard on any matter that would piss the AFL off. That said, the AFL has built this and it seems to be humming and getting better all the time. I don’t think there should be too many complaints, there’s a few want to haves, I get that, but the AFL has delivered the must have and it’s now a matter of them doing what they think is right to ensure the ongoing success and development of the league. They’ll make mistakes, as they do often with decisions in the men’s game, but people need to dial down the feelings that it’s done with murderous intent. It’s the AFL, of course they’ll make mystifying calls.

Why wouldn’t Chelsea just go through the same courses that the blokes do? I would have thought Goddard would have completed the same courses that her male counterparts had done and she’d have done it with them. Maybe the AFL is trying to get a critical mass of female coaches out there and that’s the best way to punch out the numbers.

I'd guess a lower barrier for entry, the course probably covers more basics and could be a pathway to the course the AFL players do. The AFL players that do these courses have usually been in the AFL system as players for 10+ years, there is a huge amount of experience that comes with that that the no AFLW players have yet.

Interesting, is the sticking point too short a season?

Afl could extend it so all teams play each other once. Reduce the player contracts to fund the additional games.

Aflw need to breakeven before the salaries skyrocket, to already be on the same (pro rata) as the minimum men's wage is ridiculous.

wouldn't she be mostly up forward? Maybe Scheer/Phillips insurance, with an occasional run through the midfield?

I saw Paul Marsh interviewed last night and he didn't seem to be representing the women players at all. He sounded more like an AFL lackey.

Wouldn’t doubt that at all. Still, 70% voted yes, so close enough to 2:1, our country is run at a much slimmer majority than that. I read a bit of what he said and it’s interesting that this vote would have satisfied our constitution. The required majority voted yes in a majority of clubs. So an argument could be made that a few strong personalities at a couple of clubs are holding the rest of the comp to ransom to some extent. Must admit, I’ve heard nothing official as to what the sticking points are.
