Women's Footy AFLW Fremantle - 2020 #1 Team - Season Cancelled

Ive really struggled to enjoy the womens footy as the quality isn't there yet ( but hopefully will one day),
but that womens game wasn't bad.

I was out so unfortunately didn’t get to see the whole game but the highlights looked fantastic. Such a different game style than the last 2 years much more attacking.

Hopefully more to come :)

So the WAFL just announced a women's competition. The major sponsor is West Coast. Surely I can't be the only one who sees a major conflict of interest there? Great way to set stones to poach any of the AFLW players who participate in it, but further to that the Eagles logo will be on the uniforms of players and umpires.... It sets a worrying standard for mine.

Do we expect any different from the slime.

Would you believe that I tweeted to Michelle Cowan, asking her if she was proud of the girl’s first win on the road, and she blocked me.

I guess once you join the Eagles you soon become a self-important and elitist tosser.

Michelle's not like that. She just works for a competitor now who has a very strict social media policy.

How does this work?? WAFL effectively owns the Eagles and Freo. So one of their own entities is sponsoring a competition run by the owner???

What AFLW Round 1 taught us
Dem Panopoulos - The Roar

"The Dockers change the game
This goes beyond the fact Fremantle pulled off an enormous upset and has already turned this season on its head with a first-round win over Melbourne. Trent Cooper has taken over at the Dockers and earmarked a more attacking and positively minded team in the third season of AFLW. What we saw against the Demons was a hungry team focused on moving the ball forward, hoping that would get the job done over a pure defensive focus.
It’s a little basketball-like in terms of the mindset but it’s something that sets Fremantle well apart from the rest of the clubs. The key move was to play Ebony Antonio forward despite being a star defender for the first couple of seasons. She was one of the best three players on the ground in the victory against the Demons, giving Fremantle a strong target in attack, which was the one knock on the team. Add in Kiara Bowers’s successful debut and key moments in the final quarter and it gives the Dockers some confidence for the season ahead."

Natural progression really.....they've been sponsoring the AFL umpires for years.

Bowers and Antonio made the team of the week.

Seems strange that we played in the best game of the round by far, had the highest score of the round but only managed two players in the team of the week. But Fremantle.
It seems to get me more when I see our women's team get the same treatment as our men's team.

Hooker was very good and so was our forwards.

In fairness it was a pretty good team effort. All of our players contributed in some way to the win and other than Antonio and Bowers I thought our other 'guns' weren't anywhere near as damaging (or as relied upon) as they have been in games in past seasons. Maybe unfair on Hooker, who was excellent again with her clearance work (and tackle pressure) but she turned it over quite a lot more than she normally would. Donnellan was invisible by her standards. As was Miller a bit but understandable given she came straight back in from injury. And I suspect Gibson would want to do more this weekend as well - although that arch the back run inside 50 was special. Put all that together plus Bowers being managed a bit - we all saw what happened when they let her off the leash in the 4th quarter - and that's some massive room to improve at the 'A' grade end for our women's team.

Then at the other end of the spectrum (with our 6 or so) debutants they'll be far better for getting that first game out the way and hopefully bring that confidence into round 2. Duffy handled the ball like she was a veteran - probably deserving a Rising Star but so were the two nominees so she wasn't robbed.

I was actually most impressed by our middle tier players. Houghton looked incredibly dangerous and could have kicked 4. Like Antonio, so athletically gifted but also has the height to be that real full forward target. No reason she can't become an even more dominant presence if she keeps building confidence. That play with Antonio collecting the ball on the wing and dancing through the opposition and putting it out in front of Houghton who ran on to it (eventually) then kicked it perfectly to the advantage of Caulfield running back toward goal just before the HT siren was sensational. And Sharp collecting the ball behind the centre square and using her speed to get clear and launch the ball inside 50, for Antonio to collect and swing round and nail it was brilliant. And Cain getting on the end of a kick from Duffy, and then using her speed to break the line, straighten up and nail the goal - best thing I have ever seen Cain do.

If our mid tier players can keep that going, our A graders can build into the quality we know they can all deliver, and our youngsters can settle in, we'll be in for a very good season. Brisbane will be a great test. Very strong defensively but may not cope well with the play on mentality that we seem to have. If we manage to break their lines it could get messy. But if we don't, we might struggle to score at all and lose all that confidence we built from the win against Melbourne.

She was a shithouse coach for us, tactics were absolute garbage in the games I watched.

The thing was they didn't seem to have any game plan except some defending and even that was shite. Had no idea on how to transition from HBF to FF and most of the girls just ran around like chooks with their head cut off most of the time relying on Donellan, Antonio and Miller to do all the work

They did have a game plan, they just didn't have the skills to execute, so it constantly fell down. If it constantly falls down, then players constantly find themselves out of position and improvising. The best at that are those with the most natural football brains.

Cowan's plan might even work in a few years time.

Crows had a simple game plan. Crows was drive it forward as far and fast as possible, and apply lots of pressure,so once it got to your forward line, teams couldn't work it back out without turning it over.

Yep they had a plan that matched WAFL type level footballers, not lower amateur type level.

The worst was the switching of play deep in defence, I was a pretty crap player but probably would still be a better kick than at least 95% of the players and would be pretty hesitant to attempt some of the switching they did. And when they ****ed it up would usually result in a goal in very low scoring games.
